25. The National Birds Of Prey Centre
Probably the most significant collection of Birds of Prey in the world, with around 300 birds of prey and owls. Leading the world in captive breeding, having bred 50 species so far.
http://www.nbpc.co.uk
The National Birds of Prey Centre from the air - 2002 We are open! The National Birds of Prey Centre will be open as normal until the 31 st of October 2004. The plans for next year are still "up in the air" so watch this space for further news. WHAT IS THE NATIONAL BIRDS OF PREY CENTRE? We are one of the oldest, probably the largest and certainly the best known and respected specialist collection of birds of prey in the world. Housing approximately 250 birds of over 85 species, the Centre leads the world in the number of species bred in captivity. To date 60 species have been bred here, with new species laying eggs each year. MISSION STATEMENT
The National Birds of Prey Centre achieves its conservation of birds of prey
through Education, Captive Breeding, Research and Rehabilitation. MIGRATION DELAYED ........................ The planned migration of birds from The National Birds of Prey Centre at Newent in Gloucestershire to South Carolina in the US has been delayed. Following advice from four internationally known veterinarians it has been decided to delay moving the birds from Newent to Charleston SC, because of a mosquito-borne disease called West Nile Virus that is infecting birds in the US. A vaccine is being developed specifically for birds of prey, but is not yet available.

  • Owl Facts
Have you ever heard that an owl can turn its head completely around? Or that owls are blind in daylight? Or that the feather tufts on an owl's head are its ears? Or that if you hear an owl it means bad luck? These are all misconceptions that have been passed down through generations.
  • How Owls See and Hear
An owl's eyes are fixed, so it cannot move its eyes from side to side as a person can; if an owl wants to look at something off to one side, it has to move its entire head. But what the owl can do, thanks to specialized neck bones and muscles, is move its head rapidly, far to either side, increasing its field of vision to 270 degrees. That's almost 3/4 of a circle.
  • Encyclopedia: Owls
Owls utilize virtually all habitats, from grassland and tundra to dense woodland and rain forest. The distribution and density of most species apparently are limited by the availability of suitable nesting sites, rather than by the number of potential prey animals.
  • Owl Factsheet
Birds of prey, owls along with hawks, eagles and falcons, consitute a group called "raptors" whose members are distinguished because they have talons (sharp claws) on their feet for catching prey and hooked beaks for tearing it apart. Owls, however, are only distantly related to their daytime counterparts. They are more closely related to other nighttime (nocturnal) birds like whip-poor-wills.

    39. Owls Head Transportation Museum - Exhibitions
Vacationland Woodies in Maine, a display of woodie wagons and convertibles from Maine's coastal and camping heritage.
    http://www.ohtm.org/woodies.html
Though the exhibit Woodies in Maine closed in the fall of 2001 several of the vehicles exhibited remain in our collection. To view information on our current exhibits and our complete collection, click to go to our Home Page
W oodie (woody), the name evokes images of beaches, weekend getaways, and even surfing. Dating back in design to the 1800s, the Woodie automobile was a carryover from the days of wooden wagons. The earliest woodie body can be seen on the 1900 Bronson Wagon, and closely mirrored on the 1925 Model T, positioned side by side on display for comparative purposes. The early wooden autos emerged from an age where wood was the material of choice, used in all horse drawn carriages, and even in the framing and bodywork of early automobiles. As all-metal construction became more economical, wooden construction became an object of prestige. Hand craftsmanship became an exception, where it had once been the rule, and the Woodie as we know it was born.
A panoramic view showing part of the new exhibit
Wooden construction of automobiles predates the Woodie era, as wooden bodies were around long before the Woodies we know today. Many, if not most, early automobile manufactures relied upon wooden body and frame construction, such as that performed by coachmakers. The 1885 Benz, 1903 Mercedes Simplex, 1904 Stanley Runabout, 1920 Maxwell Town Car, and a wide variety of other early examples of automobiles relied upon wooden construction to some degree, but are not considered Woodies.

Introduction This supplemental CyberGuide to Owls In The Family was developed as part of the Schools of California Online Resources for Educators (SCORE) Project , funded by the California Technology Assistance Program (CTAP).
The links here have been scrutinized for their grade and age appropriateness; however, contents of links on the web change continuously. Teachers should preview all links before introducing CyberGuides to students.
This CyberGuide, designed to supplement the teaching of Owls In The Family , consists of five activities that provide resources for students to explore the geography of Canada, (the setting of the book), dissect owl pellets, learn about Great Horned Owls and gain information about the author. While completing these activities, students will discover answers to the following questions:
    • How is the geography of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan different or similar to where the student lives?
    • What can owl pellets tell us about the diet of an owl? How do Great Horned Owls differ from other owls?
