Owls
Updated 8/23/95 Owls are birds of prey that actively feed and hunt throughout the night and during twilight hours. Often mysterious to man, owls figure largely in myths, folklore and superstition. Their large eyes, nocturnal nature and eerie calls have led to fear and loathing by many. Owls play an important role in the balance of forest and open land environments. Much like hawks, owls prey on rodent, reptile and small game populations at night. Owls feed on a variety of animal species from insects, small mammals and reptiles, to the occasional fish. Typically solitary feeders, owls may occasionally gather in winter roosts or at an abundant food source Habitat Owls are found across all of North Carolina, with the exception of some marine habitats. Owls are largely forest birds with most requiring hollow trees or dark, dense vegetation to seek refuge during the day. Since much of their diet is typically rats and mice, prime feeding habitat occurs along fields and transitions where rodents and insects abound. Owl Adaptations
  • Large Retinas - Vision is 50-100 times better than humans in poor light.

All About Owls
Owl Quiz
Owl Printout Owls are nocturnal hunting birds with eyes that face forwards. They are closely related to hawks. Owls sleep during the day and emerge at night to hunt small prey. There are about 162 different species of owls alive today, inhabiting a huge variety of ecological niches, from rainforests to tundra. Anatomy Owls have a large head and large eyes that face forwards (unlike other birds, whose eyes are on the sides of their head). This eye placement gives them binocular vision and very precise depth perception. Also, there are circles of radiating feathers surrounding each eye, giving them a wide-eyed, alert look. Some owls have feathered ear tufts; these are not ears, but are part of the owl's camouflage. Flight Many owls have thick feathers that absorb the sounds that their wings make in flight.

NEW: Kids work with owl pellets in the classroom. Do you like owls too? You can read about the history of owls and where they live and a little bit about each owl. There is also a section of my own private gallery of my own collection which numbers in the hundreds that I am working on right now. I have been collecting owls for about 20 years now (like many others) and am very proud of it. I would love to chat with or exhange with anyone more pictures of owls or any tidbits you have about these wonderful creatures. These pages are ever changing as I continue to add more info and try to aknowledge all the wonderful people who love owls. If someone should discover any material on these pages and points it out to me, I'll will remove it immediately. I have no intention of using other peoples work without their permission.

Identification of Montana's Owls

boreal owl by Denver W. Holt and Dale M. Becker
illustrated by Joe Thornbrugh The following guide is to help you identify Montana owls.. Owls are divided into two groups or subfamilies: Tytoninae (barn and bay owls) and Striginae (all other owls). In North America, the two groups are represented by breeding species; 15 species occur in Montana. Owls are basically nocturnal or crepuscular (active in the last morning or early evening). However, during winter, some species may be observed almost any time and in a variety of habitats because they are in search of food. Because most owls are active in times of low light or complete darkness, they have evolved a low-frequency vocal repertoire as a means of communication. Familiarity with these primary songs can greatly facilitate owl identification.

The WORLD OWL TRUST has, for over 25 years, given unstinting effort to ensure that endangered owls the world over survive into the next millennium for future generations to enjoy. Formed in 1972, the WORLD OWL TRUST began conducting extensive research into our native British Barn Owl after discovering that the wild population was declining rapidly. The WORLD OWL TRUST took up the challenge and, by means of habitat restoration, education, and captive-breeding and release programmes, has to date been involved in introducing over 1600 Barn Owls back into the wild. Many populations in the U.K. owe their existence to the work of the Trust and its members.
The WORLD OWL TRUST, a registered charity, is the world's premier owl conservation organisation and promotes scientific research, habitat creation and restoration, a UK national nest-box scheme, together with breeding programmes. Currently a leading player in twelve overseas projects the WORLD OWL TRUST is also committed to education and spreading the conservation message. Current research programmes include a study of Avian Malaria in Snowy Owls, owl taxonomy by DNA analysis, success rates in Barn Owl release schemes, and a new European Little Owl survey. The WORLD OWL TRUST is also one of the UK's leading wildlife rehabilitation units where many species of injured birds and other animals are received and cared for until they are well enough to return to the wild. This service is provided free of charge.
