The sea otters of Southwest Alaska are in trouble. But exactly what is causing their populations to crash remains largely a mystery to wildlife biologists like Burn who are alarmed at recent aerial surveys that show the dramatic decline in a huge area along Alaska's coastline. More Than 90 Percent Decline in Some Areas Biologists with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service already knew that sea otters in the 1,000-mile long chain of islands known as the Aleutian chain that extends from the Alaska Peninsula had declined by about 70 percent since 1992.

How to catch sea otters.
The whole company camps at a spot along the coast where it is thought that sea otter are to be found, and awaits good weather and a calm sea. When these conditions arrive, they sail 40 versts [a measure of distance] or more from the coast to find a place were observations of those Aleuts who have an instinct for the hunt indicate that the animals are to be found. Having reached the spot, the baidars position themselves in a straight line, leaving about 250 fathoms between each boat, sufficient to be able to see a partially submerged otter; thus, one party of 30 baidars can cover 10-12 versts. If more boats are present, the line stretches even farther. As soon as all the boats are in position, the occupants turn their attention to the surface of the sea around each boat. Nothing escapes the piercing gaze of the Aleut. His skilled eye can recognized the otter in the smallest black tip which surfaces momentarily. The baidar from which the animal was first seen quickly paddles to the spot where it submerged; then, the Aleut sitting in the boat raises his paddle, remaiing motionless in his seat. Immediately, the whole fleet begins to move; the straightline forms a wide circle around the baidar with the raised paddle. The latter now glides to the spot whre he expects his otter to surface, and as soon as the animal appears, the Aleut shoots the arrow which he had been holding ready.

The otters' fur "is so far superior in length, beauty, blackness, and gloss of hair to the river otters' pelts that these can scarcely be compared to it," wrote German naturalist Georg Steller, who accompanied legendary mariner Vitus Bering on his Alaska expeditions. Russian and American hunters later wiped out nearly all of Alaska's sea otters, whose luxurious fur became known as "soft gold." The otters were saved from extinction after a 1911 treaty banned the commercial hunt. But sea otters are once again vanishing from Alaska's 1,000-mile Aleutian chain and other parts of southwestern Alaska. This time, there is no obvious explanation. Alaska's sea otter population numbered 100,000 to 137,000 in the 1980s, with its core in the Aleutians and western Alaska. But numbers fell 70 percent from 1992 to 2000, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Some Aleutian populations are down to just a few thousand, about 5 percent of 1980s' levels, the agency said. Their disappearance could cause wider ecological harm by upsetting the food chain in the icy coastal waters. Otters eat sea urchins, which feed on kelp. Without the otters to control urchin populations, undersea kelp forests are being mowed down, scientists warn.

Implication of Sea Otter Population on Kelp Forest Communities By Rodney Hsu Abstract This report investigates the impacts caused by the increasing of sea otter population, on the kelp forest ecosystem. The food chain of the three major species is focused in this report: Sea otter, sea urchin and macroalgae. It provides a clear description of the food chain formed by these three species and how the existence and absence of sea otter changes the population structures of the other species in the kelp forest ecosystem. This study focuses on two researches: One was done by Dr. Jane Watson in 1993 on Northwest Vancouver Island, and the other major study was done by Dr. James Estes and Dr. David Duggins in Alaska back in the past two decades. Introduction Back in the late 18th Century after North America was discovered, the Europeans heavily hunted sea otters around the West Coast of North America. Unlike other marine mammals, sea otters have very little fat. In order to adapt to the cold water temperature during the winter period, they have very dense furred skin, which acts as great insulator. The thick furred skin was what the hunters were after for the commercial trade. The great fur hunt went on for 170 years until early 1900's when the Fur Seal Agreement was signed. By that time sea otters' population had declined to the point that they became extinct in many areas. Today, total population of sea otters have recovered, but sea otters remain absent in some areas where they used to be abundant over 200 years ago. It wasn't until the early 1980's that ecologists began to study the impacts of sea otters to the communities of rocky shoreline. By studying the top-down food chain of sea otters, various herbivorous marine invertebrate species (sea urchins in particular), and kelp, scientists have identified sea otters as a "key stone" species in the intertidal environment.

(AP) - Most of a startling number of sea otters found sick or dead on the entral California coast last month were infected with a deadly brain parasite, state scientists said Thursday. In April, 62 southern sea otters were found stranded alive or dead near Morro Bay and Pismo Beach. That's about three times the 10-year average and more than the previous record of 48 stranded or dead otters reported a year earlier. After examining the animals, researchers determined most were infected with a parasite called Sarcocystis neurona and suffered brain inflammation, said the state Department of Fish and Game. The parasite originates in the feces of opossum - a small marsupial mammal not native to California - and is known to cause brain damage. Researchers are unclear how the otters came into contact with the feces.

Sea Otters ... Other Fur trading ships. Prologue: The Sea otter. The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is the only member of the genus Enhydra and the largest member of the family Mustelidae, which also includes weasels, skunks and badgers. It is smallest marine mammal and hunts, sleeps and mates in the sea. It is found around the coast of the North Pacific Ocean from the Kurils to California where it forms a close relationship with the great kelp beds in which it spends most of its life. The sea otter dives for sea urchins and other bottom-dwelling marine life that it then kills using rocks as tools before eating. The coat of the animal is extremely dense to act as insulation in the cold water and, as such, is very warm. The indigenous peoples of the North Pacific region used the pelt of the sea otter as clothing and, when Europeans arrived in the eighteenth century, the pelts became one of the main items of trade. This beautiful, clever and interesting animal was, innocently, the cause of most of what followed in the history of the fur trade on the Northwest Coast.

Sea otters ( Enhydra lutris ) spend most of their lives in shallow coastal waters of the North Pacific. They eat, groom, nurse and sleep on the surface, often anchored by leafy kelp. Diving to depths up to 50 meters (165 feet), sea otters forage for urchins, clams and other animal food. Otters break open hard-shelled prey using anvil stones; they are the only marine mammals to use tools.

    CONSERVATION: Luxurious Fur

Unlike most other marine mammals, sea otters are insulated with dense fur instead of blubber. Air trapped between hairs conserves body heat and helps with buoyancy, so otters spend hours grooming their fur to keep it clean and fluffy. Their coats have an astounding 1 million hairs per square inch-more than any other mammal. Sea otters were hunted to near extinction, but they rebounded after the International Fur Seal Treaty of 1911 outlawed the sale of their luxurious pelts.
