© Lee Brun Otters, Inside and Out All otters seek most or all of their food in water, and they've had a long time to adapt to this way of life. Their first distinctly aquatic ancestor dates back 30 million years, according to the fossil record, which shows that ancestors of the North American river otter ( Lontra Canadensis )crossed the Bering Land Bridge and arrived in North America by the Upper Pliocene epoch. The earliest otters had sharp cutting teeth, which suggests that they were first attracted to water by fish rather than by hard-shelled invertebrates like crabs and crayfish. In this regard, river otters resemble these ancestors more closely than do other kinds of otters of 16

Three otters.
© Archive Photos. There are four species of American river otters, which range over virtually the whole of the New World. Lontra Canadensis, which is also called the northern river otter, the Canadian otter (after the place where the first specimen was collected), the land otter, and the fish otter, is the only one to occur in North America. Although referred to as river otters, they also live on seacoasts. What a River Otter Looks Like
Body:
The river otter's long, muscular body is almost cylindrical, barely thinning at the base of the skull. The skeleton is so flexible that an otter can form a complete circle, nose to tail, forward, sideways, or backward. The legs are short and powerful, the tail heavy and long, the head broad and flat. Their short, thick fur is brown, darkest on the upper body and paler and grayish on the belly. of 16

River Otter
The North American river otter Lutra canadensis ) ranges over most of North America north of Mexico. The river (or land) otter is found throughout Alaska with the exception of the Aleutian Islands, the offshore islands of the Bering Sea, and the area adjacent to the arctic coast east of Point Lay. River otters, or other otter species, inhabit most of the rest of the world. All are amphibious members of the family Mustelidae along with mink and sea otter. Animals in this family produce a strong, sometimes disagreeable scent, which is discharged from a pair of anal glands. General description: The North American river otter is a thickset mammal with short legs, a neck no smaller than its head, inconspicuous ears, and a muscular body that is broadest at the hips. Its tail is powerful and a little more than a third as long as its head and body. Only the hind feet are webbed. Adults weigh 15 to 35 pounds (6.8-15 kg) and are 40 to 60 inches (102-152 cm) in length. On the average, females are about 25 percent smaller than males. When prime, river otter fur appears black-brown, with the belly slightly lighter in color than its back. The chin and throat are grayish. Otter fur consists of a very dense undercoat overlaid with longer guard hairs, which are usually removed by furriers.

    River Otter
    Scientific name
Lutra canadensis Description At 35-53 inches from tip to tip, the river otter is Illinois' largest member of the weasel family. A stout tail makes up about 30-40% of its total body length. An otters uses its tail like a rudder while swimming. Adults weigh 10-25 pounds; males are about one third larger than females. Otters have a broad, slightly flattened head, large nosepad, stiff, bristly whiskers, small black eyes, and small rounded ears. Their bodies are muscular and torpedo-shaped, allowing them to move easily through water. The legs are short and have five fully-webbed toes on each foot. The fur is dark brown or reddish brown on the back and light brown, tan, or silver on the throat and belly. Abundance River otters were common and found throughout Illinois during early European settlement. Unregulated harvest and habitat loss caused their numbers to decline during the mid-1800s, and sightings were rare by the early 1900s. The trapping season was closed beginning in 1929, but this didn't help much. Pollution was a major problem until the 1970s, when many laws were enacted to improve water quality in our streams and rivers.
River otters were listed as a state threatened species in 1977. Their status was downgraded to state endangered in 1989. It's likely that fewer than 100 otters existed in Illinois at this time. The largest concentration lived along the Mississippi River and its backwaters in northwestern Illinois. A smaller population occurred along the Cache River in the southern tip of the state.

River otters are sleek, furry, streamlined aquatic mammals that live in rivers, streams, ponds , and marshes in Canada and the USA. They are a large type of weasel (a member of the mustelid family) . Their scientific name is Lutra canadensis (Genus, species). The river otter is an endangered species because of overhunting (it was hunted for its beautiful, dense fur). River otters are nocturnal (most active at night). During the day, they rest in underground dens. Anatomy : River otters are from 3 to 4 feet (0.9-1.3 meters) long and weigh about 44-82 pounds (20-37 kg). The tail is 1 to 1 1/2 feet (30-45 cm) long. Webbed feet help the otter swim. These sleek mammals have short legs and semi-retractible claws. Both the ears and the nostrils close when the animal is under water. Fur : River otters are kept warm by their dense fur and high metabolism. They are active all year long, even through very cold winters. Careful grooming with their forepaws keeps the fur waterproof.

Introduction River otters were historically distributed throughout much of North America, excluding the frozen Arctic and the Southwest. Otters are native to Ohio, but were extirpated by the early 1900s. In 1986, the Ohio Division of Wildlife began a seven-year project to reintroduce the species to the state. Over this period, 123 otters were captured in Arkansas and Lousiana using modern foothold traps and were released in the Grand River, Killbuck Creek, Little Muskingum River, and Stillwater Creek. Since then, river otters have been sighted in nearly two-thirds of Ohio's counties and young otters or family groups have been seen throughout eastern Ohio.

    Genus: Lutra
    Species:
canadensis One of the animals that can be found in the North American Taiga is the river otter. The Taiga is an area that is rocky, a bit icy, and has lots of pine trees. The climate is cold, rainy, and snowy. There isn't much sunshine. In addition, there are many varied species of plants. River otters inhabit areas that have thick woods, lakes, swamps, rocks, and logs near grassy areas, streams, rivers, ponds, and mostly fresh water. River otters can be found from 45û to 66û north latitude and from 120û to 139û west longitude.
The river otter reaches sexual maturity by age two. They mate between February and march. The gestation period is 62-63 days. The female usually bears two kits. The kits are about four to five ounces. When a river otter is born, it is blind and toothless which makes it helpless. The abilities that it has are they take their first steps at seven weeks. The birth of a kit is sometime between January and May. Most of the time, the female raises her young. Kits usually have to ride on their mother's back while swimming. Kits are also taught to swim. Soon the young ones will get used to the water and become great swimming hunters (they are able to catch fish at 16 weeks). The birth interval is one year. The river otter is mainly a social animal. It doesn't migrate. A river is nocturnal and only hunt in the early morning and evening.

    An Otter Family Album
    Compiled and photographed by
    J. Scott Shannon
(updated August 31, 2003) That's me, the happy fellow with the otter in his shirt. My name is Scott Shannon, and for the last 20 years, I have observed a population of seacoast-dwelling otters in far-northwest California. These are not the familiar sea otters of the central California coast. My critters are North American otters of the species Lontra canadensis - what are commonly referred to as "river otters". From the beginning of my observations in June, 1983, to the end of August, 2003, I've seen my otters 4,156 times, which is probably more than any other living person has seen these animals in their natural state. It has been the greatest privilege of my life to chronicle the history of 5 generations of otters here. And where is "here"? I'm not saying, at least not publically. I have no wish for the world to intrude on these unique animals and their home. It is a rare and precious thing to be able to directly observe wild otters at such close range. The otters are so easy to watch precisely because people here don't bother them, so they have no reason to hide themselves. In these pictures, you will see that the otters live in close association with humans, at least during the summer months. Don't let the manmade props deceive you; this drama is very real. These otters may appear tame, but it is more accurate to describe them as casual. Humans are a neutral presence to them. They pay so little attention to people, I don't think they even recognize me, despite my having been in their immediate proximity on literally thousands of occasions.

Bog ... River Otter Games Introduction North American River Otters have caught the eye of every type of person. From the children who see the otter at an aquarium to a person who shops at stores where animal fur is used for clothing. Unfortunately river otters are hunted for their fur and this causes a decline in their population. Habitat pollution and destruction currently hinder their recovery. Many centuries ago people thought the River Otters were a type of large fish. Today, people know better, River Otters are relatives of the Stoats, weasels, mink, badgers and wolverines. These groups of mammals are known as Mustelids. The Mustelids all have one thing in common, they all have scent glands. They use their scent glands to mark off what is their territory so no other of their kind come and try to live there. The glands are about the size of a marble and are in their anus. This scent is given off when they are scared or when they mark their territory. The Mustelids vary in size. They range from the weasel (8 inches long) to the largest otter being over seven feet long. Otters live on land and in water whereas most of the Mustelids live either in trees or on land. River otters are in the Class Mammalia, their Order is Carnivora, their family is Mustelidae, their genus and specie is Lutra Canadensis. In the wild they live less than 10 years; in captivity they live 10 - 15 years up to 20 years.

    40. River Otter VS Sea Otter
It s very common to mistake sea otters with their cousins the river otterbecause river otters live around either fresh water or the ocean.

    River Otter Versus Sea Otter
The sea otter's hind paws are more flipper-like and are webbed right to the tips of their toes. Their longest toe is on the outsideto help it in swimming. Their longer outer toe makes walking on land pretty tough. The front paws of the sea otter are narrow with extendable claws for hanging onto slippery fish or spiny urchins. River otters also have webbed hind paws, but they are comparatively small. Both front and hind paws are more circular in shape, because they are adapted for land travel.
A possible comparison between a river otter and a sea otter is that sea otters spend more time in the water. They stay in the water almost all their whole lives. On the other hand, river otters go on land frequently. Also, river otters eat mostly fish, clams, and snails, but sea otters eat all of those plus crabs and sea urchins. Sea otters sleep in the water but river otters sleep in dens. Something they both like to do is have fun and play.
