Andrew Taylor Still was a Doctor who sought a means of treating people that did not involve surgery. The results of operations tended to be poor due to the onset of infection. He developed a therapy that involved enhancing the body’s own defence and and repair systems, thus the patient should heal naturally. Tissue that has a sufficient blood supply, nerve supply and lymphatic drainage should be healthy. Where these essential elements are lacking congestion and ischaemia will follow and disease and poor health will ensue. The fundamental foundation of osteopathy is based on this principal. Osteopaths treat the body as a whole and it is therefore a truly holistic form of natural medecine. Although most people see osteopathy as a purely mechanical manual therapy there are branches of osteopathy that do not involve joint manipulation. These non manipulative osteopathic techniques include articulation (taking a joint gently through it’s range of movements in a repetitive manor), soft tissue, deep soft tissue or neuro/muscular technique, cranial osteopathy (cranio/sacral therapy)
