Osteopathy Osteopathy concentrates as much on why there is a problem in the muscles and joints as on the problem itself explains Anne Woodham Osteopathy - from the Greek osteon ('bone') and pathos ('suffering') - was developed in the late 19th century by an American army doctor, Dr Andrew Taylor Still, after his wife and three children died from meningitis. He believed that when the body was correctly adjusted, there would be less strain on the muscles and joints, all the systems would function smoothly and the body could heal itself naturally. Still founded the American School of advertisement Osteopathy in 1892, and in 1917 his pupil, Dr John Martin Littlejohn, founded the British School of Osteopathy. Despite early opposition from the medical establishment, osteopathy remained popular and is now accepted in orthodox medicine. Osteopaths were licensed to practise as conventional doctors in the US in 1972 and the first British state register of osteopaths opened in 1999. How does it work?

Cranial osteopathy for children by Dr Howard Lee Could cranial osteopathy relieve distressing pain and pressure in babies and small children? Dr Howard Lee investigates Cranial osteopathy is associated with the oldest known method of healing - the 'laying on of hands'. Cranial osteopaths were originally labelled 'quacks' for stating that the bones of the skull should be slightly mobile to allow the contained structures to grow and develop normally - and permit treatments. The development of modern examination and diagnostic equipment has confirmed these early statements. advertisement Osteopathy originated from the belief that misaligned bones and improper joint functions were responsible for pain and disease - resulting from a change in circulating blood in the back - and led to the development of various techniques like 'mobilisation, massage, gentle manipulation and stretching'. Such therapy works by restoring a necessary balance to structures of the skeleton, which, in turn, aids a return to a healthy function. Early experiments Cranial osteopathy was developed in the early 1900s by American osteopath William G Sutherland. He concentrated on very gentle osteopathy to the head, believing that proper functioning of the brain and nervous system depended on the ability of the bones of the skull to move slightly. He experimented on his own head and found that restrictions of movement and varying pressures (which he achieved using a helmet-like device) produced pain in various areas and had a subsequent effect on his overall health, both mentally and physically. His experiments demonstrated that gentle compression in certain areas could help, as well as detect, many problems.

Holistic-online Home Osteopathy Osteopathy is a touch therapy, and, just like massage or aromatherapy, it uses a fine sense of touch and relaxation to achieve some of the required results with patients who are in pain or overstressed. The muscles at the back of the skull that connect the spine to the head can become very tense and tight as we become stressed. provided by the American Osteopathic Association History of Osteopathy Osteopathic medicine, which incorporates Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), is a fully recognized diagnostic and therapeutic system founded by Andrew Taylor Still, MD in 1874. Controversial at first, this system opposed much of the established medical practices of the 1800's and early 1900's; which was often characterized by multiple schools of healing, many of dubious value, and supported physicians who were often poorly or incompletely trained. Treatments such as bloodletting and the use of purgatives, mercury, and alcohol-based compounds were very common. Still's own background was somewhat unique from his contemporaries at the time and earned him recognition in the Smithsonian Institute. He was the son of a Methodist minister and attended the College of Physicians and Surgeons in Kansas City, Kansas. Still also served as a state legislator and enlisted in the Ninth Kansas Cavalry during the Civil War. After the war, Still provided health care to settlers and American Indians. While facing the epidemics of the period (cholera, pneumonia, smallpox, meningitis, diphtheria, and tuberculosis) which had claimed much of his family, he became increasingly dissatisfied with the prevailing medical practices.

Chapter 8: Osteopathy:
Bonesetting Turned Scientific
God is the Father of osteopathy and I am not ashamed of the child of His mind. . . . He who so forgets God's teaching as to use drugs forfeits the respect of this school and its teaching.
ANDREW TAYLOR STILL In our discussion of chiropractic, it will be necessary from time to time to mention the old and the new practice of osteopathy. The old methods of osteopathy seem to be, essentially, the same as the practice of chiropractic today, while its new methods are very much the same as regular medical practice with the exception, of course, that the osteopath uses manipulation in his practice more extensively than do regular medical practitioners. In considering the evolution of osteopathy, we are simply seeking some clue as to what the future might hold for chiropractic. Although osteopathy might be an example of cultism turned scientific, its change began long ago; today, it stands recognized to a great degree in scientific circles. In 1953, Dr. John W. Cline, former president of the American Medical Association, headed an investigation of the practice of osteopathy and presented his findings to the American Medical Association. His report, which we shall hereafter call the Cline Report, stated: "Osteopathy has undergone a process of evolution that-no marked fundamental differences exist between Medicine and Osteopathy."

The Sunningdale Osteopathic Clinic is ideally situated for patients in the Sunningdale, Sunninghill, Ascot, Windlesham, Bagshot, Lightwater, Chobham, Virginia Water and Egham areas, but is only 20 minutes or so from further areas such as Bracknell, Windsor and Staines.
Osteopathy is very effective in helping with both recent and (especially) longer standing pain from any part of the musculo-skeletal system. Although spinal problems are generally about 50% of what we treat, we are just as interested in peripheral joint and muscular problems. Treatment, which is mostly done using the osteopath's hands, is precise and is directed at helping the problem as quickly as possible. Treatment is always appropriate for the patient and their problem.
