Growth of Osteopathy
Dr Andrew Tailer Still, the founder of osteopathy , was a man endowed with imagination, rare vision and perseverance. He was born on August 6, 1828, to a simple, hardy German farmer who was a physician by training and a missionary by choice. His mother, Martha, was Scottish. Andrew was born in a remote village in Virginia, USA. He was sturdy and strong and lived close to nature. He was fond of watching different animals. He would catch hares and squirrels and dissect them to find out the type of organs they had. Andrew's parents wanted him to become a Methodist minister. He wanted to be a physician, probably inspired by the visits he made with his father, assisting him on call of duty. He describes an incident in his autobiography. He was ten years old when he got a severe headache. He was in agony. He took a rope and made a swing between two trees, about 6-8 inches above the ground, put a small pillow over it, placed his neck on it, and lay flat on the ground with his head hanging over the swing. He was reasonably comfortable that way. He went to sleep and got up twenty minutes later minus the headache. He knew nothing about the anatomy of the neck and he never imagined that this simple action with the swing could have stopped the headache. He used the same method till he was twenty years old. At this juncture he reasoned out his initial discovery: 'I could see that I had suspended the action of the great occipital nerves, and could give harmony to the flow of the arterial blood to and through the veins, and ease effect.’

It is important that breeders realize that this disease can be passed on to future generations by breeding treated animals. Even though the treated animal no longer displays clinical signs of this disorder, he/she is still a carrier of the gene for this genetic fault, thereby creating a genetic liability in the bloodline of the breed. This is also known as an autosomal recessive trait
Following is a short explanation of how an autosomal recessive trait is passed from one set of parents to the offspring.
The capital " D " represents the dominant gene, which in this case, is free, or clear, of the disorder. The lower case " r " is the recessive characteristic, which in this case is the disorder, CMO. If the sire and dam of the puppy are not carriers of a disease, for our purposes CMO, than all the "get" from their breeding will be free of the disease. Should one of the parents be a carrier of CMO, than 50% of the "get" from this breeding will become carriers of CMO. The question remains, which ones are the carriers? Remember these are projections by statistics. It could be more than 50%, it could be less. Do you as a breeder, want to take the chance of infecting your entire bloodline with a genetic fault? Should both parent be carriers of CMO, than, 25% will be free of the disease, 50% will be carriers, and 25% will have clinical signs of the disease.

Osteopathy with Acupuncture in Barnet North London with Jeanette Thomson
CELEBRATING 21 YEARS IN PRACTICE! I qualified in Osteopathic Medicine and Naturopathy in 1982 and qualified in Homeopathic Medicine in 1985. I am a member of the Osteopathic Sports Care Association and trained in acupuncture with Dr. Campbell at The Royal Homeopathic Hospital. I've travelled widely attending conferences and teaching in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. I recently contributed to Health Which? magazine (August 2003) "Yoga and Pilates -are your Instructors Qualified?"
I have two practices - one in BARNET, North London (020 8275 9435) and
another practice in CROUCH END (mobile: 07887907026). They are both multi-cultural so I have lots of experiences dealing with many different cultures.
My treatments often combine acupuncture and homeopathic medicine with osteopathy, naturopathy and laser therapy. Other treatments such as therapeutic massage, relation therapy, reflexology and cranial osteopathy are used when indicated.
The two practices are within easy reach of Crouch End, Barnet, Muswell Hill, Mill Hill, Finchley and Potters Bar.

Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine
Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine (PCSOM) is the 19th school of osteopathic medicine in the country. Pikeville College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award the associate, baccalaureate, and doctoral degrees. PCSOM offers a four-year program that results in the degree of Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.). This is followed by one year of a rotating internship and two to five years of residency, depending upon which specialty is selected. PCSOM is fully accredited by the American Osteopathic Association Bureau of Professional Education. You are more than just the sum of your body parts. That’s why doctors of osteopathic medicine (D.O.s) practice a "whole person" approach to health care. Instead of just treating specific symptoms, osteopathic physicians concentrate on treating you as a whole. Osteopathic physicians understand how all the body’s systems are interconnected and how each one affects the others. They focus special attention on the musculoskeletal system, which reflects and influences the condition of all other body systems.

Osteopathy for back pain
Clinical bottom line
Osteopathic spinal manipulation was no better than standard medical therapy for low back pain, but reduces NSAID use
Reference
GB Andersson et al. A comparison of osteopathic spinal manipulation with standard care for patients with low back pain. New England Journal of Medicine 1999 341: 1426-1431.
Study
Patients aged 20-59 with low back pain lasting at least three weeks but less than six months were the target population. A range of sensible exclusions were made, from root nerve compressions and other neurological causes of the back pain, to pregnancy. The presence of a lesion suitable for manipulation was comfirmed by a doctyor of psteopathy. Patients were then randomised to osteopathic manipulation, or standard medical treatment. The osteopathic treatment was given by one of three physicians at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. Standard medical care involved using analgesics and other therapies like heat, cold, corsets and TENS. Osteopathy was in addition to this, and all patients saw a 10 minute educational video on back pain. Outcomes were a number of pain and back scales and questionnaires, plus measurements of flexion and extension. These were done on the 12th week by an evaluator who was blind to the treament allocation, and who was not connected to partcipants, therapists or organiser of the triall.

Welcome to the David Propert web site! David Propert graduated from the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) and established a state of the art clinic at Dolphin Square in 1993. The practice is located within a newly refurbished health and sports complex offering a fully integrated service. David's patients can benefit from easy access to the on-site swimming pool, gym and squash courts which may form part of the assessment or rehabilitation programme. For example, gait analysis on a treadmill can often highlight problems which might not be apparent at rest. A bespoke training schedule can be formulated as necessary and then closely monitored. When not at Dolphin Square, David is involved with Osteopathic education as a Physiology lecturer, supervising students at an NHS practice and running a specialist Sports Injuries clinic at the BSO. His expertise in treating amateur and professional sportspeople has developed from postgraduate training as well as working within a healthcare team. David treats a wide variety of people with conditions ranging from the classic 'bad back' to sinus problems. He is also qualified in Cranial Osteopathy which, being very gentle, is well suited to babies, children and the elderly. Contact Details

Osteopathy
Osteopathy today is a body of medicine that originally used strictly manipulative techniques for correcting somatic abnormalities thought to cause disease and inhibit recovery. However, over the past century, osteopathy has embraced the full spectrum of medicine, including the use of prescription drugs and surgery , in addition to manipulative techniques. History
The osteopathic movement and chiropractic movements both started out in the Midwest in the and had similar philosophies; however, osteopathy came to adopt the use of medicine and surgery, whereas chiropractors continue to strictly use manipulative techniques. The original osteopathic movement, viewed today by scientists as pseudoscience , was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, who was born in 1828 in Virginia. Unhappy with the ways in which his peers prescribed medicines in excess, Still sought more holistic approaches. Observing that the human body had much in common with the machines he worked on earlier in life, Still approached the study of the human body as one would approach the study of a machine. He believed that by shaking a person, one could cure disease. He rejected the idea that germs cause disease.

OSTEOPATHY
- A Case History
By Maggie Brooks DO, RGN, SMTO
A male patient age 25, 6ft 2inches tall, normal weight, presented with pain to the right of the thoracic spine radiating around to sternum which he described as very acute at times particularly when tired. The pain spread as a band around chest to sternum and then would slowly fade away. His job as a nurse in the intensive care unit involved lifting. He worked night shifts - when he was particularly aware of the pain. The pain eased on rest. Consultation and history taking gave a picture of a healthy individual who exercised by walking his dog, ate sensibly and was in a good relationship. There was no medical history of note. He has not consulted his doctor about this problem as past experience has shown him that all he will be given is tablets. He has come on recommendation of a work colleague. Onset had been insidious and he could not remember exactly when the pain began but thought he could relate it to lifting someone a week or so previously - though he admitted he was not as aware of his biodynamics on night duty. The pain was now getting worse and he asked how osteopathy worked.
