Osteopathy Information Return to top A doctor of osteopathic medicine (D.O.) is a physician licensed to perform surgery and prescribe medication. Like an M.D., an osteopath completes 4 years of medical school and can choose to practice in any specialty of medicine. However, osteopaths receive an additional 300 to 500 hours in the study of hands-on manual medicine and the body's musculoskeletal system. Osteopathic medicine is dedicated to treating and healing the entire patient as a whole, rather than focusing on one system or body part. An osteopath will often use a treatment method called manipulation a hands-on approach to assure that the body is moving freely. This free motion ensures that all of your body's natural healing systems are free to work unhindered. Osteopaths hold to the principle that a patient's history of illness and physical trauma are written into the body's structure. The osteopath's highly developed sense of touch allows the physician to palpate (feel) the patient's "living anatomy" (the flow of fluids, motion and texture of tissues, and structural make-up).

Osteopathy
Definition
Osteopathy is a system and philosophy of health care that separated from traditional (allopathic) medical practice about a century ago. It places emphasis on the musculoskeletal system, hence the nameosteo refers to bone and path refers to disease. Osteopaths also believe strongly in the healing power of the body and do their best to facilitate that strength. During this century, the disciplines of osteopathy and allopathic medicine have been converging.
Purpose
Osteopathy shares many of the same goals as traditional medicine, but places greater emphasis on the relationship between the organs and the musculoskeletal system as well as on treating the whole individual rather than just the disease.
Precautions
Pain is the chief reason patients seek musculoskeletal treatment. Pain is a symptom, not a disease by itself. Of critical importance is first to determine the cause of the pain. Cancers, brain or spinal cord disease, and many other causes may be lying beneath this symptom. Once it is clear that the pain is originating in the musculoskeletal system, treatment that includes manipulation is appropriate.
Description
History Osteopathy was founded in the 1890s by Dr. Andrew Taylor, who believed that the musculoskeletal system was central to health. The primacy of the musculoskeletal system is also fundamental to

by the human anatomy and the science of healing, Andrew Taylor Still pursued a life of study and practice to eventually establish the healing art of osteopathy
http://history.aoa-net.org/Osteopathy/osteopathy.htm
Near the turn of the 19th century, the son of a pioneer physician took another look at the way things were being done in medicine and saw a better way. Always fascinated by the human anatomy and the science of healing, Andrew Taylor Still pursued a life of study and practice to eventually establish the healing art of osteopathy. Still first articulated the idea of improving medical practice while living in Kansas in 1874. It was at that time, he had a seminal thought: The human body has much in common with a machine, one which ought to function well if it is mechanically sound. Still was a typical frontier physician, having been trained through apprenticeship, with some medical lectures attended later. Like nearly all frontier physicians, he did many things besides practice medicine: farming, mechanical work, and fighting in the Civil War. His medical practice included caring for both settlers and American Indians. He faced epidemics such as cholera, malaria, pneumonia, smallpox, diphtheria, and tuberculosis. After the War, spinal meningitis claimed three of his children and he began searching for a better system of medicine. This new system promised simply to support health, which on the surface would not seem controversial. But the end of the 19th century was a time of multiple schools of healing, and on the frontier there was medical competition and a mistrust of new ideas.

Observable signs include: 1 - Locking or clicking of one or both lower jaw joints (TMJ), with or without pain.
2 - Limited jaw opening.
3 - Facial asymmetry with one side puffier than the other.
4 - A protruded lower jaw - this compromises the airway so the head is held forward (the forward head posture strains the cervical vertebrae - the thoracic, and lumbar vertebrae must compensate, and now either one shoulder or hip is lower than the other). The primary symptoms include: 1 - An intolerance of light, requiring sunglasses during the day, and difficult driving at night.

Osteopathy was founded by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, M.D in 1874. Dr. Still was a both a physician and a minister. He treated his patients using what medical discipline that was available at the time and became increasingly frustrated with the severe toxicity associated with those treatments. He was ultimately propelled to find a different way when three of his sons died of spinal meningitis as he was helpless and could not offer them any treatment. Osteopathy Gains Recognition

What is a doctor of osteopathy
If you are like most people, you probably don't know the difference between a medical doctor,M.D., and an osteopathic doctor, D.O.. They really are alike in many ways. bodyOffer(424) Applicants to both D.O. and M.D. medical colleges typically have a four-year undergraduate degree with emphasis on scientific courses. Both complete four years of basic medical education. After medical school, they can choose to practice in a specialty area of medicine, then complete a residency program, which can range from 2 to 6 years They both must pass a state licensing examination. D.O.s can perform surgery, child delievery, treat patients, and prescribe medications in hospitals and clinic settings and in all branches of the armed forces. D.O.s use all the tools of modern medicine, just as M.D.s do. They are specially trained to preform osteopathic manipulations, a technique in which the D.O. use their hands to diagnose illness and treat patients, giving special attention to the joints, bones, muscles, and nerves. Manipulations improves the circulation, which in turn, creates a normal nerve and blood supply, enabling the body to heal itself. But, D.O.s bring an extra dimension to your family's health care, they look at the "total person".
