What is Osteopathy?
All current medical literature points to the fact that the body works as one harmonious system, rather than as a collective grouping of separate parts. Osteopathic medicine has long known and studied this truth and thus has offered a unique approach to diagnosis and treatment for more than 100 years. Pioneered in the late 1800s by a medical physician named Andrew Taylor Still, osteopathic medicine is dedicated to the treatment and healing of the entire patient, rather than approaching a patient's symptoms in a crisis-oriented, one-spot only approach. This respect for, and study of, the entire functioning of the human system has led to various means of diagnosis and treatment. Perhaps the most recognizable means of treatment includes that of manipulation, whereby the physician uses a hands-on approach to assure that the body is moving freely. This free motion ensures that all innate healing systems are free to work unhindered. For example, common sense dictates that if the lungs are impeded by ribs, a diaphragm or a spine that is not moving well, breathing will be hindered. If breathing is hindered, the body's immune functions such as lymphatic drainage will not be working well, and healing will be delayed. This observation led Dr. Still to manipulate his patients daily during influenza epidemics. It is recorded in literature that 21,000,000 people died worldwide in the flu epidemic of 1917-18. Medical hospitals in America reported a 30 to 40 percent mortality rate. However, osteopathic patients had a mortality rate of less than one percent.

Osteopathy and Acupuncture at the Appleton Clinic

Harmony and balance in all areas of life are central to this form of medicine. Health and wholeness represents balance and loss of this state can lead to illness. By looking at the symptoms of the illness along with other contributary factors such as diet, age, work routines, past illnesses and traumas a picture can be built up which helps us to understand how to restore the balance and bring the person back to health. This can be achieved with a combination of Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture, Osteopathy and Massage. You may also be offered advice on diet and nutrition.

What's New (and Old) in American Medicine
by Jonn Salovaara
Conscious Choice, June 2001 It's not new anymore: health-care centers continue to spring up with a variety of practitioners working together as a group M.D.s alongside acupuncturists, massage therapists alongside psychologists, and so on. Despite the logistical and accounting difficulties, the trend continues toward a future medicine that combines American Medical Association (AMA)-approved allopathic modalities with a variety of healing therapies ranging from chiropractic to nutrition to Traditional Chinese Medicine and beyond.
Meanwhile, osteopaths, representing an older branch of American medical practice, are being recognized as practitioners of a different sort of "integrative medicine." Since the founding of osteopathy, its practitioners have integrated the best medical wisdom of the day with their own manual adjustment methods. Today, you may find an osteopath who embodies, as a single physician, a fairly wide range of complementary practices. At the very least, an osteopath will know about osteopathic manipulation techniques (OMT) in addition to standard allopathic procedures.
If you're interested in exploring alternative or complementary modalities, but are held back by the too-frequently-correct assumption that your insurance will only pay for allopathic physicians, osteopathic treatments may be covered. Osteopaths receive training equal in length to that given to M.D.s and are fully licensed in all fifty states. They can prescribe medicine and practice surgery if surgery's a requisite in their area of specialization. Because of their extensive training and full licensing, many insurance companies will pay for services osteopaths provide even if they won't pay for other kinds of non-M.D. treatments.

The two therapies have much in common, but chiropractors tend to focus on the joints of the spine, and the nervous system, while osteopaths put equal emphasis on the joints and surrounding muscles, tendons and ligaments.
How they work
Chiropractors and osteopaths share conventional medicine’s view that the human body is like a machine and that any disease is due to a breakdown of part of the machine. However, they also believe that many health problems can be caused by poor posture and misalignment of muscles and joints (and, with chiropractic, particularly the spine). They suggest that if the structure of the body is improved and the spine put back into alignment, the function of the body improves, problems will be alleviated and good health will be restored.

Osteopathy for Parents by Viola Frymann, D.O., F.A.A.O., F.C.A. First of all, I would like to talk about Osteopathy in general. I would like to enlighten you about the differences between the way in which a medically trained physician thinks and the way an osteopathically trained physician thinks about a problem. When your child was born it was, first of all, evaluated by the pediatrician. He was looking to make sure there was no congenital defect, either externally visible or invisible, such as perhaps in his lungs or the heart or the digestive tract, and also to make sure that all the systems were functioning efficiently. As osteopathic physicians we are looking at something more when your baby is born, because we recognize that the process of being born is probably the most traumatic experience that most people ever have. In the study of 1250 newborn babies it was demonstrated that 10% have a healthy freely movable cranial mechanism. In other words, all of the bones of the head are in correct relationship and moving as they should. This is a figure that has been consistent in several studies which have been done on newborn babies. The number of babies that have a gross, visible disturbance in the cranial mechanism - the sort of deformity that you can see across the room - that number may be somewhere about 8% or 10%.

Osteopathy's Sectarian Roots
William T. Jarvis, Ph.D.
By his own account, at 10 o'clock on June 22, 1874, the "truth" of osteopathy illuminated the mind of Andrew Taylor Still, the son of a missionary who used to assist his father in caring for ailing Shawnee indians. Still attended medical school but never obtained a degree. Still, who had become disillusioned with doctors and drugs following the loss of his children to cerebro-spinal meningitis, hypothesized that all diseases were due to misalignments of the bones (hence, osteo bone, pathy disease). He believed that such misalignments produced muscle spasms which impeded the circulation of the blood resulting in disease (termed the Rule of the Artery ). [For a review of Andrew Taylor Still's eccentricities see: Gardner. Fads and Fallacies In The Name of Science . Dover Publications, 1952.] Prescientific Practices DOs examined patients for 'luxated' bones throughout the body (not just the spine as do straight chiropractors). Examples in an early osteopathic textbook [1]: "Lesions of the lower two ribs are important causes of constipation, not only by spinal interference with the sympathetics ..., but by direct mechanical pressure upon the bowels themselves." (p.139)
