Introduction to BCOM / Holistic Osteopathy @ BCOM The College Naturopathy in Practice After Graduation A Career with a Future ... BCOM Faculty Holistic Osteopathy at BCOM for many yearsHistorically the College has, for many years, promoted the idea that optimal health depends not just on the impact of physical stresses but also the impact of biochemical, environmental and psychological stresses on the individual. Naturopathic osteopathy is a complex interaction which recognises the significance of each of these areas for the individual and attempts to restore a ‘healthy balance’ by the appropriate treatment and/or advice. These ideas were, at one time, considered to be somewhat radical but, particularly in the last decade, good quality research has confirmed their validity. Following on from these pioneering ideas a whole new area has now opened up in within medical research : the field of bio-psycho-social interaction on health.
Osteopathic Medicine
The therapeutic principles of osteopathic medicine are based on the understanding that the human body functions as a unit and has an inherent ability to self-regulate and self-heal. Holistic, or Naturopathic Osteopathy, as taught and practiced within BCOM’s teaching clinics, is based on the Bio-Medico-Psycho-Social model of health care. The treatment/therapeutic aims are to:
  • identify abnormalites/dysfunctions within the human structure and function.

In the first few years after qualification completing courses in minor surgery, pathology, pharmacology, radiology and many biomechanics courses. More recently he has obtained a B.Sc and completed an M.Sc in Sport's injury and Therapy in July 2000. His thesis looked at the effects of orthoses in running. Peter has worked extensively with dancers. In 1988 he was appointed consultant to the newly formed English National Ballet School, and lectured on the care of feet for dancers and clinically checked and treated all of the dancers. He now regularly attends to the podiatric needs of the Royal Ballet Company at the Royal Opera House and has done so since 1992. In 1991 Peter was appointed to the Royal Masonic Hospital until its closure a few years ago. Here he worked with leading physiotherapist Vivien Grisogono and contributed to one of her many books on running and running injuries. Peter has an active interest in running and general fitness both personally and through his two children, Ben and Sophie. He treats athletes from many different disciplines. The recent acquisition of the latest Ultrasound Imaging System from America allows many injuries to be safely examined. This helps in choosing the correct treatment and permits the progress of the condition to be checked upon.

What Is It? Osteopathy is a holistic approach to the practice of medicine. It emphasizes that all systems of the body are interrelated and that any adverse changes in one part of the body may impair the functioning of other systems or organs. For this reason, doctors of osteopathy (D.O.s) treat the body as a whole, often focusing special attention on the musculoskeletal system (bones and muscles) in an effort to find the underlying cause of an ailment. Osteopathy also stresses preventive medicine, encouraging patients to maintain a healthy lifestyle and eat a healthy diet. Osteopathy was first developed in 1874 by Missouri physician and surgeon Andrew Taylor Still, who became disenchanted with conventional medicine after losing three of his children to spinal meningitis. Still became convinced that health and illness were largely dependent upon the soundness and mechanical functioning of the body's bones, muscles, and joints. Based on this idea, he created a new medical science, which he ultimately named osteopathy, from the Greek words osteo

The manipulative therapies: osteopathy and chiropractic
Andrew Vickers Catherine Zollman Osteopathy and chiropractic share a common origin. Their roots can be found in folk traditions of "bone setting," and both were systematised in the late 19th century in the United States: Daniel D Palmer, the founder of chiropractic, is said to have met with Andrew Taylor Still, the founder of osteopathy, before setting up his own school. The therapies remain relatively similar, and many textbooks and journals are relevant to both. The term "manipulative therapy" refers to both osteopathy and chiropractic.

Few births are "easy" for either mother or child; the mother's pelvis and pelvic floor have to accommodate the turbulent passage of the infant, whilst the infant is forcibly squeezed out of the womb through the dilated cervix and then is subjected to a series of twists and turns as it passes through the birth canal to be ejected from the warm, comfortable womb into the cold light of day.
This short journey is probably one of the most difficult we ever encounter, but it was what we were designed to do, and there are helpful measures to ease the passage, such as flexibility of the bones of the head, including their ability to overlap, and maternal hormones that allow the pelvic ligaments to give enough to widen the pelvic outlet width. Problems can arise from this journey, but more usually they occur if the overall plan is altered.
Often the strong contractions will begin without enough cervical dilation, so the baby's head won't fit through the exit from the womb. The baby is forced, head downwards, onto the unyielding cervix and pelvic bones. The large forces produced by such repetitive movements can not only traumatise the baby's soft, flexibly boned head, but also cause the infant physiological and psychological stress.
As the baby leaves the womb it enters the birth canal where it has to undergo a number of twists and turns before it finally arrives into the world. These twists and turns help to mould the baby's head, but problems can occur if either the baby's passage is too fast, when the head doesn't get enough time to get properly moulded, or if it gets stuck and it's too slow, the head and body can get squashed and the baby can get very stressed.
