Physicians may be employed in a private practice, or work in industry, research, education or administration. Both medical doctors and osteopaths diagnose and treat illnesses and disorders of the human body. Both use modern medical tools and tests, perform surgery, prescribe and give medicine, and conduct research. However, osteopathic treatment involves the musculoskeletal system (the bones, muscles, and joints) as an additional area of concern. Preventive medicine is an important aspect of both types of service. Those physicians receiving M.D. degrees are Doctors of Allopathic Medicine while those receiving D.O. degrees are Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine.

Osteopathy is a medical discipline based on manual diagnosis and treatment of impaired movement within the
human body. Impaired movement between different tissues of the body result in impaired functioning of the body, thus causing illness Osteopathy is a combination of three things; science, art and technique, much the same way as man is a combination of mind, body and spirit. Science It’s science lies in an in-depth knowledge of the human body, derived from basic medical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, neurology, pathology etc. This knowledge allows us to practise osteopathy safely and to know when a patient should rather be referred to medical practitioners. Art The art of osteopathy lies in understanding the patient one is dealing with. Understanding how to approach him/her in a manner that will restore balance to the body and therefore allow the body to reclaim a healthier state. Technique Techniques are the body of Osteopathy. They allow medical science and the artful approach towards a patient to be channelled into a manual treatment that removes the obstacles that impede normal movement.

Dubious Aspects of Osteopathy
Stephen Barrett, M.D.
Osteopathic physicians (DOs) are the legal equivalents and, in most cases, are the professional equivalents of medical doctors. Although most DOs offer competent care, the percentage involved in dubious practices appears to be higher than that of medical doctors. For this reason, before deciding whether to use the services of a DO it is useful to understand osteopathy's history and the practical significance of its philosophy. Cultist Roots Andrew Taylor Still, MD (1828-1917) originally expressed the principles of osteopathy in 1874, when medical science was in its infancy. A medical doctor, Still believed that diseases were caused by mechanical interference with nerve and blood supply and were curable by manipulation of "deranged, displaced bones, nerves, muscles removing all obstructions thereby setting the machinery of life moving." His autobiography states that he could "shake a child and stop scarlet fever, croup, diphtheria, and cure whooping cough in three days by a wring of its neck." [1] Still was antagonistic toward the drug practices of his day and regarded surgery as a last resort. Rejected as a cultist by organized medicine, he founded the first osteopathic medical school in Kirksville, Missouri, in 1892.

InnerSelf Magazine (enter your email here) Sample Issue Discovering Osteopathy Osteopathy is a distinctive and complete system of health care, based on broad principles that “offer a way of thinking and acting in relation to questions of health and disease” (Dr. I. M. Korr). The procedures it uses in diagnosis and treatment promote healthy functioning in a person by correcting mechanical imbalances within and between the structures of the body. By structures we mean the muscles, bones, ligaments, organs, and fascia. The fascia is a very thin layer of tissue that is found under the skin. Correcting the mechanical imbalances in the structures is done by restoring, maintaining, and improving the harmonious working of the nervous and musculoskeletal systems. The name osteopathy (given to the therapy by Dr. Still) comes from the Greek

Osteopathy gains acceptance, but may be losing identity
February 4, 2000 Web posted at: 12:03 PM EST (1703 GMT) By Elaine Herscher (Healtheon/WebMD) When Dr. Nancy Nichols began her osteopathic practice 15 years ago, no hospital in her town of Mesa, Arizona, would grant her privileges. Today, she's welcome to practice at all of them. To Nichols, that represents real progress for her profession. Long considered pseudo-doctors by the medical establishment, osteopathic doctors are in fact licensed physicians who can do surgery and prescribe drugs but have added training in manipulative therapy. It's the manipulation part of the practice that has earned them a reputation as "alternative" practitioners. But only 6.2 percent of osteopathic physicians now practice manipulation on the majority of their patients, leading many to worry that their profession will soon have nothing that distinguishes D.O.s from M.D.s. "It's sort of like being the victim of our own success," says Dr. Eugene Oliveri, D.O., president of the American Osteopathic Association. The November 4, 1999 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine warned osteopaths that they are losing something valuable.

Thank you for visiting the Virginia Board of Medicine's Practitioner Information Website. This site contains information on over 31,000 Doctors of Medicine, Osteopathic Medicine, and Podiatry either currently or previously licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
About This Site: Senate Bill 660 was passed by the General Assembly and became law July 1, 1998. This law required doctors of medicine and osteopathy to provide "certain data" to the Virginia Board of Medicine, and then required the Board to make the information available to the public. In 1999 doctors of podiatry were added to the groups of practitioners required to report "certain data" to the Board.
This site has been available since July 24, 2001 and is the result of implementation of the requirements of the original 1998 law and subsequent laws. With the exception of the Virginia Board of Medicine Notices and Orders and Virginia licensing information, the information contained in each practitioner's profile is self-reported by the practitioner. Practitioners are also required to update their profiles when the data they are required to report changes.
The Board of Medicine does not verify any of the practitioner's self-reported information. The practitioner has the responsibility to report the data, and Board regulations deem it unprofessional conduct to falsify any data submitted.

Equine Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a powerful tool in the care of our animals. The treatment is based on the premise that any structural dysfunction will have far reaching effects on the health of the body as a whole by disturbing the circulatory system and nerves. The treatment techniques seek to release tension in the soft tissues of the body, increase blood and lymph flow and bring more freedom of movement. In working with the inherent healing and repair processes, osteopathy brings much speedier and more complete recovery from injury, greater ease of movement and improved vitality. Many people have experienced the benefit of osteopathic treatment for problems such as low back pain, sciatica, neck pain and headaches. Osteopathy is now being used by owners of horses, working and pet dogs and other companion animals. About Osteopathy
Osteopathy was developed by Doctor Andrew Taylor Still in the mid 1800's in the US. Dr. Still became very interested in the natural processes within the body which bring about repair and healing of injury and disease. He developed techniques to stimulate and promote the health of his patients and founded the first osteopathic school at Kirksville.
