  • Microsoft told to end monopolistic practices
But is it really business as usual?
Long-suffering software vendors that had hoped that the Federal Trade Commission would save them from the Microsoft juggernaut will have to look elsewhere for salvation. On July 15, the U.S. Justice Department filed a civil suit charging that the company used unfair contracts that choked off competition and preserved its monopoly position. At the same time, Microsoft signed a consent decree that, if approved by the court, will settle the suit. In the decree Microsoft agrees to change some of its practices in licensing its operating systems to hardware vendors. In return, Justice and the European Commission have agreed not to go to court. History. Justice focus: OEM licensing. The FTC eventually deadlocked on the investigation and, last December, dropped it altogether. Justice then picked it up and soon began cooperating with the competition enforce- ment arm of the European Commission. Under the terms of the consent decree agreed to by Microsoft and Justice, Microsoft will have to end some of the heavy-handed pricing tactics with which it has twisted the arms of its OEMs in the past. No longer will it:

The company has also hired an investment banking firm to assist it in evaluating alternatives, including locating a financial or industry partner or other transaction. The company has also had difficulty paying trade debt on time. The company expects to report a revenue shortfall in the second quarter of 1997, as a result of the continuing slow demand for its Apex hard drive through distribution channels. Revenues are anticipated to be approximately $11 million, which is lower than the $14.1 million reported in the first quarter. Pinnacle projects a loss of about $5 million for the period. Operation Review 08-JUL-97 Net sales in the first quarter of 1997 fell 19%, year to year, reflecting a product mix change away from mature product lines and reduced unit sales from older generation RCD products. Gross margins widened, on an improved mix from the sale of Apex drives and Apex-based optical library systems. Total operating expenses declined 16%, and the operating loss narrowed. However, following significantly higher interest expense and taxes of $22,000, versus $3,000, the net loss increased to $4,063,000 ($0.39 a share, based on 34% more shares) from $3,915,000 ($0.50).

    Workstation Maintenance
The Workstation Maintenance group offers services for workstation (WS) users in the campus and maintains WS- and PC-pools, offered by RUS for students.
In accordance with the project's goals, these concepts and techniques for workstation main-tenance (WS-M) at MPA should be considered as typical for WS support in the campus. In principal, the WS-M group is endeavoured to apply concepts, which are evaluated by the RUS department Workstation Concepts.
For all supported WS platforms (DEC, HP, IBM, SGI, SUN) the following services will be offered:
    · Installation of the hardware
    · Installation and update of operating systems
    · User and resource management
    · Supervision of system integrity.
All kinds of advisory support is free of charge.
    Fields of Activities: Workstation Pool
Students have free access to a WS pool maintained by RUS. For their accounts a full range of UIDs is separately maintained by a specific kerberos server. Filespace is located within an own AFS-cell. Both services are offered to other pools in the campus.
To simplify the pool management, each client is replicated from a reference system image. All services are server based, e.g. mail is available via POP-mail from the central studbox.

    File System Types
Computer file management systems can be classified by the type of file organization they provide ( Flat File or Hierarchical File Systems); and the type of user interface they present ( Character/Command or Graphical/Event Driven). These file organizations and interfaces greatly affect how users manipulate and interact with their information.
    Flat File Systems
Early computer file management systems ( MSDOS 1.0 IBM CMS , etc.) only allow a linear list of the files. In order to group related files, users were forced to name the related files very similar, usually varying only the last 1 or 2 characters of the name or the type (extension) of the file. To be fair CMS also allows a user to maintain several ' virtual ' disks which do provide a minimal level of hierarchical organization. A contributing limiting factor in these file systems was the restriction on the name of the file length (usually 8 characters still present in DOS and Windows 3.1 today). This serious drawback often requires the use of cryptic file names, where in the worst case each character is a code with a specific meaning. Fortunately these systems have declined in use due to the popularity of hierarchical file systems.

In computing, an operating system OS ) is the system software responsible for the direct control and management of hardware and basic system operations, as well as running application software such as word processing programs and Web browsers.
In general, the operating system is the first layer of software loaded into computer memory when it starts up. As the first software layer, all other software that gets loaded after it, depends on this software to provide them with various common core services. These common core services include, but are not limited to: disk access, memory management, task scheduling, and user interfacing. Since these basic common services are assumed to be provided by the OS, there is no need to re-implement those same functions over and over again in every other piece of software that you may use.
