http://biomed.tamu.edu/biomaterials/Orthopedic.htm

SUMMARY This portion of the website looks at the orthopedic region of biomaterials. Orthopedics is currently one of the largest medical industries and deals with deformities, injuries, and pathology of the bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The arena of orthopedic medicine is widely researched and has led to improved surgical procedures in areas such as bone grafting, joint replacement, and limb supports. Finding suitable biomaterials for a variety of applications is a key aspect of orthopedic research. For these reasons and perhaps others as well, the field of orthopedics has a substantial presence on the World Wide Web.
First, there are numerous sites dedicated to providing an internet portal of sorts for orthopedics information. In addition to these sites, quite a few professional organizations in the field orthopedics have Web presences. Also, many of the groups that accomplish the important research in orthopedics have established themselves on the Web. Several manufacturers of orthopedic devices have useful homepages as well. The first portion of this site gives links to many of these sites.
The rest of the site gives more specific links regarding the use of biomaterials in the most common orthopedic applications fracture repair and joint replacement. Fracture repair is applied almost wherever there is a broken bone in the body (broken arm, broken leg, etc.) and assists the bone healing process. The two most common joints that are replaced are knee and hip joints, although finger, ankle, shoulder, and elbow joints are also replaced. Note that the following is not a completely exhaustive list of web sites dedicated to orthopedics. However, most of the very important ones are given here. Furthermore, many of the sites listed here have as one of their more useful features a page with a substantial number of links.

SULZER ORTHOPEDICS Sulzer Medica disclosed that a "mineral-oil based lubricant" was found on the surface of the recalled Inter-Op® shells. In some patients, this lubricant has prevented proper bonding of the prosthesis with the patient's own surrounding bone and tissue causing joint instability and severe pain. Sulzer had reported that 129 people had undergone required revision surgery by mid-January, 2001. However, that number has now increased to 573 as of March 1, 2001. Sulzer Orthopedics Inc. has now received adverse reports concerning one of its artificial knee parts. Though the manufacturer is not recalling the product, it did withdraw it from the market in March due to a problem with one of the parts of the knee prosthesis called the tibia baseplate. About 1,300 people in the United States have received the knee part so the potential problem with the knee part is far smaller in scope than the problem with the Inter-Op hip prosthesis.
How can I find out what type of hip prosthesis was used in my hip replacement surgery?

Who is at risk for developing Osteoporosis?
  • Women are at higher risk than men. People with a family history of osteoporosis. People who smoke. People who drink alcohol or caffeine excessively. Women who experience menopause at an early age. Post-menopausal women. People with low calcium intake. People with thin body frames. People who are not physically active.

While osteoporosis affects more than half of all women over the age of 65, one out of five persons with osteoporosis is a man. Back to Top What can be done to identify or treat Osteoporosis?
If bone loss is detected early, osteoporosis may be preventable. A test is available that can help people at risk for osteoporosis identify their bone density level and measure their risk for acquiring the disease. The test is called a CT Scan Bone Mineral Densitometry test (CT BMD). Back to Top What is a CT Scan Bone Mineral Densitometry test?

Description of the Problem:
Study Objectives:
  • To prevent musculoskeletal injuries in equine athletes, with a focus on preventing fetlock arthritis.
Characterize the events that occur in bone during the development of fetlock arthritis using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Confirm MRI findings with microscopic and microradiographic examinations of MRI-imaged bone sections.
Develop this technique to detect impending fetlock arthritis with MRI at a stage when the early abnormalities are reversible with appropriate treatment.
Experimental Approach: Researchers examined the cannon bones (specifically at the fetlock joint) of deceased Thoroughbred racehorses with fetlock injuries (ranging from none to severe) using noninvasive MRI of whole specimens and microradiography of thin bone slices. Microradiography is an established technique to detect bone changes associated with damage and thickening due to training. Researchers assessed the capability of MRI to detect these changes by comparing changes noted on MRI images with microradiographs of the same bones. The changes identified also were compared between bones that were damaged and bones that were only thickened to determine which changes are specific for bone damage and are useful diagnostically.

Description of the Problem:
Catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries are a serious concern for the horseracing industry. These injuries typically require surgery and can be so severe that they necessitate immediate humane destruction. The cannon bone is one of the most commonly fractured bones in racehorses. Previous UC Davis studies have identified several risk factors associated with the development of cannon bone condylar fractures. In particular, researchers determined that suspensory ligament injuries and the use of toe grabs both appear to be linked to the occurrence of these fractures. Although a cause and effect relationship has not been documented, these risk factors may elevate bone strain at the fracture site.
Study Objectives:
  • Investigate the possible mechanical connection between suspensory ligament injuries, the use of toe grabs, and the development of condylar fractures.

B bone scan - a nuclear imaging method to evaluate any degenerative and/or arthritic changes in the joints; to detect bone diseases and tumors; to determine the cause of bone pain or inflammation. Back to top
C cartilage - a tissue that connects and supports. Cartilage is made up of cells and fibers and is found mostly in joints.
cast - a cast holds a broken bone in place as it heals, prevents or decreases muscle contractures, or provides immobilization, especially after surgery. Casts immobilize the joint above and the joint below the area that is to be kept straight and without motion. For example, a child with a forearm fracture will have a long arm cast to immobilize the wrist and elbow joints.
clubfoot - also known as talipes equinovarus, clubfoot is a foot deformity that is detected at birth. It affects the bones, muscles, tendons, and blood vessels and can affect one or both feet. The foot is usually short and broad in appearance and the heel points downward while the front half of the foot, or forefoot, turns inward. The heel cord (Achilles tendon) is tight. The heel can appear narrow and the muscles in the calf are smaller compared to a normal lower leg.
