The SECUROS Bone Anchor
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is the suture spindle shaped as it is?
The spindle is designed to hold the suture without breakage in cyclic loading. It will accommodate either braided suture (up to #5 polyester) or up to 80 pound tensile monofilament nylon. When using braided suture in collateral ligament reconstructions, the suture can be placed in the spindle with a single throw (half of a square knot) in the groove to dramatically increase suture/anchor strength. The edges of the hole are rounded, allowing thousands of cycles of significant force without suture breakage.
Why do I need to pre-drill when there is a trocar point on the anchor?
Pre-drilling, whether it is a bone screw, external fixation pin, or bone anchor is always a good idea. The trocar will drill into bone, but it primarily acts to tap the screw threads. The harder the bone the more important it is to pre-drill. If you choose to not pre-drill in softer bone you can. Use the instructions for "Application in dense cortical bone," as starting the hole may prematurely cleave the insertion shaft.
Can I use the bone anchor with the SECUROS Cruciate Repair System?

Bone Cancers Home Cancer Types Bone Cancers Primary bone tumours are tumours that start in the bone. In contrast, secondary bone cancer is where the cancer started in another part of the body but has then spread to the bones. The most common types of primary bone tumour are osteosarcoma and Ewing's sarcoma, both of which are most frequently diagnosed in children and young adults. Other less common types of bone cancer include: Chondrosarcoma (a cancer arising in cartilage cells, usually found in adults between ages 50-75, though the less common mesenchymal-chondrosarcoma is more frequent in younger patients), Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma of bone (MFH), Chondoma (a rare low grade malignancy occuring mostly between ages 30 -70), and other rare tumours.

Diagnosis of Skeletal Metastasis
Detection
There are two main reasons to detect skeletal metastases: diagnosis of painful lesions staging of cancer before start treatment. Diagnosis of Symptomatic Lesion. Clinical Features •pain-the most common symptom ,but not always present •swelling-rare presentation •tenderness
Biochemical parameters
•alkaline phosphatase •urinary hydroxiproline •urinary hydroxiproline/creatinine ratio The biochemical parameters currently avaiable lack specificity and are of little value in diagnosis metastases.
Radiographs
Skeletal metastases are usually multiple, but isolated lesions do occur. The lesions may be lytic, sclerotic, or mixed. •sclerotic-prostatic carcinoma, mammary, gastrointestinal, and blader cancer. •lytic-occur in every type of primary tumor. •mixed-most occur from mammary carcinoma There are 3 types of lytic lesions: •geografic-large, solitary, well defined (>1cm). •Moth eaten- multiple smaller lytic areas (range, 2-5mm), that may coalesce to form larger areas. •Permeative- multiple tiny lytic areas (usually < 1mm) seem principally in cortical bone Patologic facture is a major complication of skeletal metastases.Usually occur with lytic lesions, and the risk of this complication occuring is related to the amount of cortical bone destruction.

Avian Orthopedics
As avian veterinarians, we are often called upon to treat avian orthopedic problems. Some occur as the result of trauma (ceiling fan injuries, flying into a window or mirror, or getting stepped on), others occur from nutritional imbalances, and others may occur as a result of genetic or developmental problems. Fortunately, our training in mammalian orthopedics will give us a good base for approaching correction of orthopedic problems, as the main principles are the same. Most of the orthopedic techniques developed for mammals can be applied to birds, taking into account the anatomical differences in avian species, and whether or not the bird can have flight restored. Anatomy and Physiology The bones of flighted birds are unique in that they have evolved some pneumatic bones that are hollow and contribute to the bird being light enough to fly. The bones of the pelvic girdle, some ribs, the humerus and the femur all are pneumatic, and contain large air-filled medullary canals that are involved with the respiratory cycle during flight. The bones of birds are relatively brittle and have thin cortices. They also contain more calcium than mammalian bone, which tends to make them more brittle and prone to developing multiple fractures at one site. The distal portion of the leg, below the tibiotarsus, has very little soft tissue covering bone, and the proximal half of the humerus also has little soft tissue covering bone, so fractures in these areas are often open and comminuted. When a pneumatic bone is fractured, often subcutaneous emphysema occurs, but it usually resolves within a day, without treatment.
