St. Nicholas
A Dedicated Servant of God More than 1,600 years ago, in the year 270 AD, St. Nicholas was born not far from Myra, in a land that is now part of the country of Turkey. In those days Orthodox Christians were persecuted for their faith. It wasn't easy to be a Christian. Many of them were tortured and executed because they believed in Christ. Nicholas was taught by his parents to love the Lord with his whole mind, heart, soul, and with ail his strength. When they died he inherited their money. He used this to help the poor, the hungry, and the sick. Whenever he helped anyone he did it secretly, so that only God would know, He did not want praise from people; he wanted his reward to be only in Heaven. After he gave away the money his parents had left him he decided to become a monk. He went to a monastery where he lived and worked and prayed, intending to spend the rest of his life repenting of his sins. But soon it became clear that God wanted him to be a priest, and so he began to study the Law of God. St. Nicholas became the parish priest of a village church after his ordination. He worked very hard, instructing his flock and helping those in need. He also performed all the Divine Services and was a spiritual father to all.

HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE ON THE CHRISTIAN RELIGION IN ETHIOPIA
Ethiopia was well known to the ancient writers. It is mentioned in the Bible more than 38 times by both Old Testament and New Testament writers. So, in accordance with the Biblical traditions of the ancient Israel, Ethiopia is described as the land of "CUSH" which was located by the "RIVER NILE" (Gen. 2: 13) . The Septuagint (The Greek Translation) also describes it after the name of "ETHIOPIA" which has the same location. Apart from the Biblical traditions, many historians knew Ethiopia and described its geographical location, referring towards the south of Egypt, which was populated by both Hamitic and Semitic stocks of people. According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, it was known as the "LAND OF PUNT" located at the end of the World, and they said "Land of Ghost. " Homer (Greek poet of the 8th century B.C.) knew of this historical land and its people, when he said "ETHIOPIA, THE LAND OF SUN BURNED FACE." He described inhabitants again, as "THE BLAMELESS RACE."

The Orthodox Church in Japan
Its Brief History
The Orthodox Church in Japan is one of the Orthodox Churches in the world. Orthodoxy was brought into Japan from Russia by St. Nicholai in the 19th century. Although St.Nicholai was officially appointed as a chaplain for the Russian consulate in the beginning, he came with a strong missionary zeal in 1861. He not only mastered the Japanese language completely but was also well versed in Japanese culture as well as religion by the time he began his mission. His command of the language was so perfect that no one could challenge him with his translations of the Scriptures as well as the liturgical books.
St. Nicholai began his missionary work after baptizing first Japanese Orthodox Christians in 1868. While his disciples were helping him by converting people in the northern area, St. Nicholai moved down to Tokyo from Hakodate. He eventually established the headquaters where the Holy Resurrection Cathedral presently stands.
His extensive work, founding seminaries, the translation center, and numerous churches and communities, witnesses his strong missionary zeal as well as the Presence of the Holy Spirit. He departed in 1912. Metropolitan Sergei inherited St. Nicholai's work but he had to face difficulties starting from the earthquake, the Russian Revolution and the Second World War. Historical consequenses in Japan did not allow the Orthodox Church in Japan to continue her relationship with the Russian Church. When Metropolitan Sergei died in the end of the Second World War, the clergy and faithful wished to enter into the relationship with the Metropolia, the present day, Orthodox Church in America.

What is Orthodox Unity
Orthodox Unity is an organisation of Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Christians which seeks to make available positive information about the dialogue between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches. What is the Joint Commission For almost 40 years a dialogue has been taking place between the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches. This now has an official status and a Joint Commission of bishops and theologians has been studying the issues which have caused the separation of our Churches. Our Mission The Joint Commission urges a process of education and information to take place. We hope to be a small part of that process by sharing information, news and documentation about the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches on this site. The History of Dialogue The first unofficial meeting between clergy and theologians of the Eastern and Oriental Orthodox Churches took place in Aarhus, Denmark in 1964. There were 4 unofficial meetings: Aarhus - 1964
Bristol - 1967
Geneva - 1970
Addis Ababa - 1971
These were followed by a series of official dialogues between the Churches. These took place at:

    Who was Saint Nicholas?
Nicholas was the bishop of the Christian Church in the Asia Minor city of Myra (now Demre, Turkey) in the fourth century AD. He is beloved throughout the Christian East for his kindness and help, both during his life and afterward. He is called "Wonderworker" (or "Miraculous" or "Miracle-Worker", Greek "thavmatourgos") for the miracles which he performed and which he still performs, by God's grace. Many accounts ofSaint Nicholas are available, both elsewhere on the World-Wide Web and at this site . In the Protestant West, where the invocation of saints was suppressed, Saint Nicholas became popularly known as
