About the Association and its activities
The Association of Field Ornithologists (AFO) is dedicated to the study and conservation of birds and their natural habitats. It was founded in 1922 as New England Bird Banding Association, and shortly thereafter became the Northeastern Bird-Banding Association. The organization broadened its interests and re-named itself the Association of Field Ornithologists in 1987. The AFO prides itself as serving as a bridge between the professional and the amateur ornithologist. The organization's membership and governing council consist of both amateur and professional ornithologists, in recognition of the contributions that both make to ornithology. AFO and its members contribute to ornithology by:

for more information Oscar Wilde once wrote that "Enough is as bad as a meal. More than enough is as good as a feast". He could have been writing about the BTO's Nest Record Scheme when we have recently marked the feast to celebrate 1,000,000 Nest Record Cards! Each card representing the detailed observations made on a single nest by a volunteer observer for the BTO. It is incredible to think that when Sir Julian Huxley and James Fisher got together to start the "Hatching and Fledging Enquiry" in 1939 that it would be one of the cornerstones of the BTO's Monitoring programme nearly 60 years on. But now it is the biggest, most active and most computerised scheme in the World. The United States Nest Record Program is next in size, holding about a third of the BTO's total and the Finnish scheme is the next most active, currently receiving about a sixth of the records that the BTO receives each year. The BTO now receives more than 35,000 records per year from about 1000 volunteer birdwatchers, about half of which are organised from clubs and societies, or less formal groups, that carry out nest recording as part of their annual round of birdwatching activities.

A Passion for Birds:
American Ornithology after Audubon
Mark V. Barrow, Jr.
Shopping Cart
Reviews Table of Contents In the decades following the Civil Waras industrialization, urbanization, and economic expansion increasingly reshaped the landscapemany Americans began seeking adventure and aesthetic gratification through avian pursuits. By the turn of the century, hundreds of thousands of middle-and upper-class devotees were rushing to join Audubon societies, purchase field guides, and keep records of the species they encountered in the wild. Mark Barrow vividly reconstructs this story not only through the experiences of birdwatchers, collectors, conservationists, and taxidermists, but also through those of a relatively new breed of bird enthusiast: the technically oriented ornithologist. In exploring how ornithologists struggled to forge a discipline and profession amidst an explosion of popular interest in natural history, A Passion for Birds provides the first book-length history of American ornithology from the death of John James Audubon to the Second World War.

Customer Reviews The book is without doubt the best ornithology textbook in existance. While this may be aided by the fact that it is virtually the only one there is out there, it is accurate, comprehensive and user friendly. my main problems are that it is starting to be a little dated, and of course - the price. I searched for a textbook on ornithology that I could use in association with the Bird Biology Home Study Course that I was planning to take through Cornell University. I found the textbook at Amazon.com. The information in this textbook is absolutely wonderful! Frank Gill presents an "encyclopedia" of information in an easy-to-read, comprehensible format. Anyone interested in the serious study of bird biology will want to add this textbook to his or her bookshelf. Within the next few months, I will reread this textbook again. How many textbook readers can honestly state that they would reread any textbook in its entirety? Every chapter intrigued and delighted me. I will be actively searching for more books by Frank Gill, based upon the presentation of materials in Ornithology, 2nd edition.
