birding.com Ornithology Classifying Bird Species:
In 1758 a man named Carolus Linnaeus (Carl von Linne) developed a classification system for all animals. He divided the animal Kingdom into groups that each had things in common. Then he divided those groups into smaller groups that had even more things in common. When he finally finished, there were seven levels in his system. At the lowest level is the species. His scientific classification system is still used today.
These seven levels are shown below. Here is how scientists classify an American Robin:
Level Name Description Kingdom Animalia Animals Phylum Chordata Animals with backbones Class Aves Animals called Birds Order Passeriformes Birds that perch Family Turdidae All Thrushes Genus Turdus Similar Thrushes Species Turdus migratorius American Robin Notice that the species has two names. The names are in Latin. The first name is the Genus and the second is another name that often describes a prominent feature of the bird. The second name may also be a person's name often the name of the ornithologist that first discovered the bird.
Scientists sometimes will talk about "races" or "tribes" of one species. Human Beings are a species but there are many races of humans. (Think of a Japanese Sumo wrestler, an pygmy from New Guinea and a Masi warrier from Africa). The same is true for birds. When you go birding you may notice that some birds, such as the Yellow-rumped Warbler, look different in the East than the same species does in the West. Different races of the same species often are separated geographically.

For those of you conducting projects with a survey or census, we have placed an Adobe Acrobat version of the reference:
Handbook of Field Methods for Monitoring Landbirds by: John Ralph, Geupel, Geoffrey R.; Pyle, Peter; Martin, Thomas E.; DeSante, David F.
You access the article by visiting the e-reserve page at the library, select the course number, and enter the password. They gave me the password "ecol484" (all lower case), but I could only get in using "mimus", so try both if necessary. You'll need a copy of the Adobe Acrobat software, which is obtainable through the reference page. The reference is stored in three parts; if someone wishes to look through and e-mail me the useful sections, I'll update this link.
Additional information and pointers on monitoring and surveys can be found in a section of the Birdnet site devoted to the topic. They include a page of references on surveys and monitoring.

About Marine Ornithology Marine Ornithology presents peer reviewed contributions concerning international seabird science and conservation. Marine Ornithology is supported and published biannually through a partnership between global seabird societies including the African Seabird Group, the Pacific Seabird Group (PSG), the Australasian Seabird Group, the Seabird Group (U.K.), and the Dutch Seabird Group. The African Seabird Group , the Pacific Seabird Group , the Australasian Seabird Group , the Seabird Group , and the Dutch Seabird Group have jointly managed and published Marine Ornithology: an International Journal of Seabird Science and Conservation since 2003. John Cooper and the African Seabird Group founded Marine Ornithology (initially named Cormorant ) in 1976. Under a joint venture agreement, Marine Ornithology is now managed by a Steering Committee appointed by supporting seabird societies. Dr. Rob Barrett of Tromsø, Norway, John Cooper of Cape Town, South Africa, and Dr. Tony Gaston of Ottawa, Canada, currently serve as co-editors, along with a distinguished international editorial board. The societies hope that seabird biologists and managers will publish their work in Marine Ornithology to attract the widest possible international readership.

Submission of Manuscripts How to submit and article, short communication, book, proceeding, or other publication for review. MO Internal Instructions To Authors Marine Ornithology is published jointly by the African Seabird Group and the Pacific Seabird Group. The journal publishes full-length papers, short communications (usually less than three printed pages long), book, website and software reviews on all aspects of seabirds and marine ornithology world-wide. Contributions dealing with coastal or inland birds such as gulls, terns, cormorants and pelicans will also be considered.Ê Review papers or Commentaries on important or emerging topics in Marine Ornithology are encouraged.
From 2001 onwards, Marine Ornithology will be published both in hard copy and in electronic form at this, the Marine Ornithology website. Papers will be posted to the web site individually, as soon as possible after acceptance, so that publication can be speeded. For those browsing the electronic version of the journal, papers will be available in Portable Document Format (PDF) so that they can be captured as exact facsimile of the printed version for reading or printing. There will be no charge for viewing or downloading papers posted by Marine Ornithology.
Authors do not have to be members of the sponsoring seabird societies. All contributions (except for book reviews) are submitted to at least two referees. If revised manuscripts are not received by the editor within six months of author's receipt of editorial and referee's reports, they will be treated as new submissions. Contributions are normally published in order of acceptance, but electronic submission of original and revised manuscripts will greatly speed the process. We encourage authors to submit in electronic format, as well as in hard copy.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Ornithology is the branch of biology Biology is the science of life. It is concerned with the characteristics and behaviors of organisms, how species and individuals come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with their environment.
Overview of biology
Biology encompasses a broad spectrum of academic fields that are often viewed as independent disciplines. Together, they study life over a wide range of scales:
Click the link for more information. concerned with the scientific For the journal named Science , visit Science (journal). Science (from scientia, Latin for "knowledge") refers to the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about nature and the body of already existing knowledge so gained. The scientific method is based on careful observation and the testing of theories by experiment. Science does not claim to make any statements about how nature actually "is", for the scientist should know that we can only make conclusions about our observations of nature. The development of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20th century showed us that our observations equate to interactions, and the incredible implications of wave-particle duality made "objectivity" in science practically impossible.
