Ornithology
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Ornithology is the branch of biology Biology is the science of life. It is concerned with the characteristics and behaviors of organisms, how species and individuals come into existence, and the interactions they have with each other and with their environment.
Overview of biology
Biology encompasses a broad spectrum of academic fields that are often viewed as independent disciplines. Together, they study life over a wide range of scales:

Science (from scientia, Latin for "knowledge") refers to the systematic acquisition of new knowledge about nature and the body of already existing knowledge so gained. The scientific method is based on careful observation and the testing of theories by experiment. Science does not claim to make any statements about how nature actually "is", for the scientist should know that we can only make conclusions about our observations of nature. The development of Quantum Mechanics in the early 20th century showed us that our observations equate to interactions, and the incredible implications of wave-particle duality made "objectivity" in science practically impossible.

SONGS AND CALLS Call - a brief sound of simple acoustic structure- a peep, cheep, squawk, chatter, etc. Song - a relatively long, often melodious, series of notes usually associated with some aspect of courtship. syrinx . When a bird sings, air from the lungs is forced through the syrinx and air passing over the membranes causes a sound. Either one of the two membranes, or both, may be used in singing. Since two different sounds may be produced, the variation in both loudness and frequency is enormous. The songbirds have the greatest number of muscles in the syrinx (4-9 pairs) while most other bird groups have only one pair. In general, the complexity of the syringial muscles is related to the complexity of the songs a bird can produce. But there are exceptions such as the American Crow, which has seven pairs of syringial muscles but a limited voice. Parrots on the other hand, can mimic the human voice and only have three pairs of syringial muscles. Function of Song Proclaim sex/induce another bird to reveal its sex . There is a correlation between the complexity of the song and dull plumage and little or no sexual dimorphism. The duller the plumage and/or the more the sexes look alike, the more complex the song (e.g. Song Sparrows).

    Monterey Bay, California
Instructors: Debra Shearwater and Peter Pyle COURSE DESCRIPTION The Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary is one of the richest marine ecosystems in the world. Its shape gives protection from the prevailing northwest winds, making for normally comfortable pelagic trips the year-round. INSTRUCTORS Debra Shearwater is the Founder/Director of Shearwater Journeys and has been conducting pelagic trips off the central California coast since 1976. As a full-time naturalist/birder, she has participated in over 1400 pelagic trips. Seabirds and marine mammals have been a major focus of her life. Debi also has experience with seabirds off the east coast of the US, and in the Seychelles Islands, Galapagos Islands, the Mediterranean, and off the northwest coast of Africa. She is co-producer of a videotape, Through the Seasons: An Introduction to the Seabirds and Marine Mammals of Monterey Bay . Her current research involves Ashy Storm-Petrels, Xantus’ and Craveri’s Murrelets, and Ferruginous Hawks. She has written numerous articles about seabirds, and has been featured in books and on the television program

    Ornithology 101
What My Cat Taught Me About Birds (and Small Rodents)
S amael brought home his first kill (a dove) around October or November 1999, shortly after he began living with us. We naturally wanted to commemorate the event (and ameliorate a vague sense of guilt). C ats aren't fond of pain, so we had to reject a friend's suggestion that we tattoo a small dove on his shoulder. Instead, we devised this webpage as a general record of - and tribute to - Sam's kills. O ur observations are therefore somewhat ailurocentric, since they are based on what the cat has brought home, and on how the local birdlife behave around him. R esponsible cat people that we are, we have completely failed to replace his lost bell, and we only keep him indoors at night when he wants to stay in (ie. it's wet out). But then Sam's much too lazy a hunter these days, and since he lost his bell, his kill rate has actually decreased E verything we know about the backyard birds of Perth, Western Australia, we've learnt because of the cat. Like how to tell a dove from a honeyeater when all that's identifiable is one foot.
