[Oriental Medicine] Yin and Yang
By Dr. Park Chan-joo If you are interested in the Eastern philosophy, you might have heard of yin and yang. However, its easy to find the explanations of these terms to be vague. The concepts of yin and yang can be used to explain everything in the universe, including all the parts and functions of your body. This is the reason that they are the criteria to understand, diagnose and treat the body and even the mind in oriental medicine. Originally, yin meant the shady side of a hill and yang referred to the sunny side. Since sunshine and shade are two interdependent sides of a hill, these two aspects are seen as a single whole. For example, night only exists in relation to day, and cold only exists in relation to heat, which can explain that both are inseparable complementary pair. According to Eastern philosophy, every single thing in the cosmos has two aspects, a yin and a yang. Therefore, yin and yang don¡¯t indicate concrete things, but can be a way to recognize and analyze objects. In addition, they are philosophical concepts, representing two things and reflecting two opposite characteristics inside one thing. Night, darkness, stillness, cold, lower part, introversion, repression and others belong to yin. On the other hand, such things as day, brightness, movement, heat, upper part, extroversion and excitement belong to yang. In relation to the human body, form, organs, blood, inside, front part and the right side are in the range of yin, and function, bowels, ki, outside, back part, left side are in the range of yang.

When Marie came to see me, she was a recent law student graduate ambitiously studying for her bar exam. She was 27, a single mother, and on first glance appeared in good health. But for many years she had suffered with severe stomach pain. For pain relief she used strong prescription drugs, a method which was not always effective.
Marie explained that, for years, she had been maintaining an intense study schedule that involved staying up late to learn her craft. From an Oriental medical perspective, excessive concentration can weaken the spleen, which is part of the digestive system and converts food essences into Qi (pronounced "chee") or vital life energy.
Marie's pain was especially intense when she was hungry and the hunger was accompanied by irritability. She also satiated a keen thirst with iced beverages and lots of coffee, particularly lattes, which are made with expresso.
Upon initial examination, I found Marie's pulse to be wiry, which indicated to me that she had Heat in the Stomach and Liver. Oriental medicine diagnoses the body climatically; so, heat, cold, wind, dampness, and dryness are viewed as possible pathogenic factors. The nature of Heat is to accelerate metabolic activity, activate circulation, and dilate blood vessels. In Oriental medicine, it is not necessary to have a fever recorded on a thermometer to verify the existence of excess Heat in the body. Hot conditions are often associated with thirst, dryness, constipation, agitation or difficult urination.
