American Organized Crime
American Organized Crime is a collection of articles on organized crime and the Mafia in the USA. Ultimately, I hope to cover organized crime from the earliest gangs right up to the present day, but with such a large subject it is easier to concentrate on one period at a time. For now, all my work is focused on the years before and during the Prohibition. This is partly because I like to start at the beginning, and partly because Prohibition was a huge factor in gangsters' rise to power.

This is the prologue to the upcoming book The Bullet or the Bribe: Taking Down Colombia's Cali Drug Cartel by Ron Chepesiuk, the story of the rise of the powerful Cali Cartel and the long and often frustrating campaign that U.S. and international law enforcement waged to take it down. The book details the cartel’s rise to international prominence and the lifestyles of its godfathers, its efforts to buy Colombia, its death struggle with legendary Colombian drug trafficker Pablo Escobar, its brilliant strategy to portray itself as the kinder, gentler drug cartel from Colombia, and the mistakes that ultimately led to the crumbling of its well-oiled organization. The book will be published by Praeger, a member of the Greenwood Publishing Group , in the fall of 2003.

Russian Organized Crime
Arnaud de Borchgrave
Director, Transnational Threats Initiative Testimony before the U.S. House of Representives
Committee on International Relations October 1, 1997
On September 24, President Yeltsin said that "criminals have today brazenly entered the political arena and are dictating its laws, helped by corrupt officials. They can penetrate everywhere unless the whole of society, from top to bottom, joins in an effort to eradicate this scourge. Our policy on this will be very tough." This was Mr. Yeltsin's seventh crackdown in six years against organized crime and corruption. Three years ago, President Yeltsin called his country, the Russian Federation, with 150 million people and over 20,000 nuclear warheads, "the biggest mafia state in the world... the superpower of crime that is devouring the state from top to bottom." The situation has not improved since then. Grigory Yavlinsky, the leader of the reform "Yabloko" party, and a declared candidate for the presidency in 2000, was in Washington last week when he said, "A corrupted system of criminal power has been established in Russia and now poses the main threat to the economy... Not a single widely publicized [contract] murder, including of well-known journalists and the deputy governor of St. Petersburg, was successfully investigated in Russia over the last five years. A political will rather than the criminal code is needed to break the stranglehold of crime and corruption."

Task Force Activity
While organized crime is not a new phenomenon today, some governments find their authority besieged at home and their foreign policy interests imperiled abroad. Drug trafficking, links between drug traffickers and terrorists, smuggling of illegal aliens, massive financial and bank fraud, arms smuggling, potential involvement in the theft and sale of nuclear material, political intimidation, and corruption all constitute a poisonous brew—a mixture potentially as deadly as what we faced during the cold war. R. James Woolsey

The Honored society, or Mafia, as it was less often called, was a vast criminal brotherhood that developed in Palermo and western Sicily. It rose as a reaction to centuries of misrule. What distinguished the Mafia from similar groups was the pace at which it prospered and took over Sicilian society. By 1900, it controlled virtually the entire western third of the island. Members took control of all local governments in the city and assumed management of all factories and landed estates. Eventually, the migration of thousands of immigrants from Sicily to the U.S. would bring many members of The Honored Society to New York, and it's five boroughs. The Mafia would slowly take control of New York, Chicago, Nevada, Havana, and much more of the U.S.

Flood, John J. -a Biography "Crime Dawg" Commentary Preface: This article was written by Robert Lombardo, of the Cook County Sheriff's Department, no relation to Joey "The Clown" Lombardo or his son, Joseph Lombardo, Jr who was installed as secretary-treasurer of the Chicago district Council in 1987 when James Corporeale had to go to prison, having exhausted his appeals on his conviction for robbing Laborers' health benefit funds. That was the same" Racketeering" case for which Arthur Coia got off on a legal technicality. The legal technicality was the statue of limitations having expired. Luskin was special counsel to OCRS on the Accardo, Coia indictments. Defense counsel raised the defense of the statue of limitations at the start of the trial, DOJ appealed the judge's ruling, and the appellate court told the judge not to dismiss the case on that basis. After the presentation of evidence, Hauser's testimony, the defense raised the defense a second time. Under the rules, the prosecution could not appeal the judge's decision to dismiss this second motion. The judge granted the motion. Was the judge bribed? What do you think? .The "Outfit" ala "Pat Marcie" was very good at bribing judges? "Hitman" Aleman got off the first time for murder, not the second time. See Cooley testimony Chicago District Council Trusteeship. What is interesting about Lombardo's scholarly article is the revelation that the first president of LIUNA from Chicago (Moreschi)was the bastard child of
