"Thus, if I make a garden, "I need not print a line, nor conjure with the painter's tools to prove myself an artist...Whilst in other spheres of labor the greater part of our life's toil and moil will of a surety end, as the wise man predicted, in vanity and vexation of spirit, here is instant physical refreshment in the work the garden entails, and, in the end, our labor will be crowned with flowers."
[Garden-Craft, by John D. Sedding]
Hello fellow Gardeners! I've been into Organic gardening for about seven years growing Vegetables, Flowers, and Herbs. Here I'd like to thank my Mother, for all her knowledge, given so freely (and for all the starts of plants she's given). Thanks Mom!!! Thanks also to the people at Organic Gardening Magazine and Rodale Press (Organic Gardening Books) for much of the info I've learned regarding the safe and natural way to garden. I highly recommend this Magazine and Rodale Press. In the fall, winter and spring I use a 12' by 24' solar and woodburner heated greenhouse to start seedlings, grow vegetables and to over winter many of the plants that I use to decorate my yard and deck with in the summer. I have corresponded and traded seed and information with gardeners from all over the U.S. and some in foriegn countries. In doing so I gained access to many difficult to find and unusual plants and met some very nice people. On this page you will find info and also links that I have found interesting and useful and I really hope you do to!

According to Ernest Charles Wildlife Gardening Catalogue, there are nearly 3 million acres of garden in this country. This is more than the total area protected by nature reserves. Gardening is a national obsession, and we do it for all kinds of reasons. To some it is all about creating a visual display, to others it is all about soil. Some people grow food, some create wildlife sanctuaries; many simply see gardening as a chore. From a green point of view, we can never get away from the fact that, for most of us, gardening is our one direct chance to decide what happens to a part of the Earth's surface. That said, it's also a very personal part of our culture - and even people who are passionate about paving, or who find power tools irresistibly macho, can still make important green gardening choices.

Secrets to Great Soil (Stell) SORRY, THIS ITEM TEMPORARILY OUT-OF-STOCK qty: Rodale's All-New Encyclopedia Of Organic Gardening When it first appeared in 1959, The Encyclopedia Of Organic Gardening appealed primarily to what was at that time a rather specialized segment of the gardening community... those people who believed that there exists a strong direct relationship between the health of our bodies and the health of the soil in which we grow our food. Over the past years the Encyclopedia has helped millions of gardeners throughout the world to restore the fertility of their soil, grow more bountiful crops, eat better food, and increase their personal productivity and self-reliance. Dog-eared, dilapidated copies adorning the shelves of garden sheds, greenhouses and potting benches everywhere bear witness to the book's enduring value as a practical gardening guide, a comprehensive source of all those bits and pieces of gardening wisdom of which even the veteren grower has occassional need.

What is Organic Gardening?
Organic gardening involves growing plants in soil that contains organic, natural substances, uncontaminated by chemically formulated fertilizers or pesticides. Organic gardening emphasizes a holistic approach to cultivation. Ideally, it includes animals, insects, plants and soil to produce a "sustainable" food supply. "Sustainable" means that over time, the resources will be able to replenish themselves and thrive. Pest reduction and soil enhancement strategies can involve attention to soil quality, beneficial insects, and barrier plants. Why Care2 Garden Organically?

READ FOR YOURSELF ABOUT ORGANIC FARMING ADVANTAGES
Can Organic Farming Be Profitable?

.....by Melvin D. Saunders ........Initially, fertilizers and pesticides were foisted upon innocent farmers to provide an agricultural boost to their harvests for a few short years. But such a short term goal leaves an eroded soil, contaminated groundwater and a weakened crop resistance to pests and disease as a result. But before the 1st widely used synthetic pesticide DDT hit the market in 1946, American farmers lost about a third of their crops each year to insects, weeds and disease. Today, pesticides, fungicides and herbicides exceed a cost of $4 billion a year, and farmers still lose the same one-third amount of crops Obviously, chemicals waste money and destroy the environment, so how long will it take to wake farmers up? Every year modern agricultural methods are destroying the long-term ability of American farms to produce decent food, because about 98% of American farmers are farming with chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The Natural Resources Defense Council estimates that approximately 845 million pounds of pesticides and herbicides are used on American farmlands each year. The U.S.D.A.'s Economic Research Service calculates that about 45 billion pounds of synthetic fertilizers are also dumped on U.S. farms each year.
........In China's Jiangsu province alone, about 27,000 people are severely poisoned each year by pesticides, 10% of them fatally. A 1987 National Academy of Sciences report estimated that pesticides may be the cause of an extra 1.4 million cancer cases among Americans over their lifetimes, while pesticide poisoning among farm workers in California ranks as the highest rate of occupational illness in the state. World practice has shown that chemical pesticides non-toxic to man simply do not exist.

    Organic Gardening
After spending nearly most of my life in hot dry climate, and working with the soil locally, I have come to know just how to prepare the dry soil to produce a healthy and thriving garden. I am sharing some recommendations in this page to help people, who live in the southwestern area, select the best possible site upon their property to have a successful garden. Some of which are:
      • Site must be exposed to full sun or nearly full sun. A Southern exposure is the best for a garden to get 6 hours minimum of full sunlight to be successful.
      • Plant rows in a north and south line for early sun.
      • Protect plants after 1pm in the summer with shade cloth.
      • Use stable walkways like walking stones to avoid walking directly upon the garden soil.
      • Arizona soil often times contains caliche, so it is recommended to make a raised bed above it.
      Things to avoid
      • Low areas to avoid pooling of water
      • Steep slopes so water has time to seep in before running off.
      • Shaded areas, as the plants require at least 6 hours of full or partial sunlight.
      • Near trees due to the problem with tree roots interfering with turning soil.

Yglecias's Gardening Tips
Gardening for some is a way of life, and for others is a nice hobby to keep them occupied. Regardless of the purpose of your garden, I have created this web page to offer methods of gardening as well as some helpful gardening tips to any whom may be interested. Being a certified Master Gardener in Arizona, I have come up with ways of gardening that uses less water consumption and provides pest free gardening that yields some of the freshest tasting vegetables I've ever had. I am experienced in both Hydroponics and Organic gardening in the Arizona climate. Contrary to popular belief, you CAN grow crops year around using the systems I have developed and tested myself. The system above has been in use year around for the last 3 years and has been very successful in producing several varieties of vegetables for consumption. If you are interested in learning more about gardening and how to set up your own in this hot desert sun, take a look at the links below, as I have provided information on how you can get started, as well as some helpful hints with managing your garden.

About Us
We're your gateway to a world of information about organic foods-foods grown free of chemicals and pesticides. Once, you could only find organic foods in health foods stores. Today, organic foods are available at supermarkets and farmer's markets, in restaurants and through mail-order suppliers, even here on the web. But it can be hard to keep up with so many new sources. Organic Kitchen TM is an organic foods product, research and marketing company, and a registered brand in the United States of America. We explore the Internet and provide links to websites we think will interest you. In the future, we may make our products available for purchase. Meanwhile, please enjoy what we hope will be the start of a useful, content rich (and pesticide-free) environment of information about organic foods. Welcome!
Why Organic?
Fatal outbreaks of e-coli bacteria, contamination of dairy and farms products as a result of the Chernobyl accident, the ban on British beef for fear of Mad Cow Disease, food fertilizers that contain toxic and radioactive waste-we've all heard about recent incidents that make us suspect that something has gone dangerously wrong with our food supply. NBC News has reported that 9000 people die each year in the U.S. due to food related illness. Our exposure to man-made chemicals in the food we eat is suspected of being a major factor in today's increased risk to cancer.

I use four guidelines for most of my food choices. First, I avoid foods that are high in saturated fats (animal fats), high in polyunsaturated fats (corn and other vegetable oils) or high in hydrogenated oils (aka trans-fatty acids: margarine and solid shortenings, for example). Second, I avoid foods with pesticide residues, artificial flavors and colors, and preservatives. While I’ve always avoided these chemicals to some degree, I’ve become more cognizant of them since my son was diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome (a neurological disorder that causes involuntary movements and vocalizations). Anecdotes from people with TS or from their parents suggest possible links between these chemicals and the disorder, as well as with such others as attention deficit disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Many pesticides have been linked to various types of cancer and to disruption of the endocrine system. Third, I try to include as many nutrient-dense foods in our meals as possible. One of the best things the United States Department of Agriculture has ever done, I believe, is to instigate its "Five-a-Day" campaign, urging people to eat five servings of fruits and/or vegetables a day. This is not so difficult if you consider that a serving is just half a cup of a fruit or vegetable, and that juices count; it’s quite enticing when you consider that these five servings may help save you from cancer, heart disease or other dreaded diseases.
