Organic Gardening Natural Insecticides
Organic Gardening Natural Insecticides
Guide H-150
L. M. English, Extension Entomologist
Despite our best efforts, nonchemical methods sometimes fail to prevent excessive insect damage in the garden. At such times, the use of insecticides may be the only alternative left to save the crop. When damage becomes great enough to warrant emergency measures, organic gardeners often will want to use natural insecticides and various homemade botanical sprays, instead of synthetic organic chemicals. The insecticide used should have low toxicity to man and to other warm-blooded animals. Insecticides should be used only when needed and in strict accordance with label directions. A good understanding of insecticides allows these materials to be used effectively without harming you or the environment. The following information may help New Mexico gardeners select a natural insecticide for their specific needs. Pyrethrum Botanical insecticide. This slightly toxic insecticide is derived from the flowers of a species of chrysanthemum imported mainly from Kenya and Ecuador. The material causes rapid paralysis of most insects, but the insects usually recover unless the pyrethrum is combined with a synergist or other poison. Pyrethrum mixed with synergists such as piperonyl butoxide or piperonyl cyclonene, which increase toxicity and produce longer residual action is used extensively in space sprays, household sprays, crop sprays and dusts. This chemical is registered for use on most vegetables and fruits at any time during the growing season.

THE KEY TO GROWING TOXIN-FREE FOOD
Danger of Pesticides Toxin-Free Food How It All Began] Laboratory Report ... More Information
Danger of Traditional Use of Pesticides and Fertilizers
The dangers of pesticides and fertilizers have been well documented in recent years...both to the farm worker and to the consumer of the food. Conditions caused by these products include general ill-health, "environmental" illness, kidney failure, cancer, and many things in between...and probably others which medical science has yet to associate with this source. Since the 1940's, pesticide use has increased by a factor of ten, In spite of this increase, crop losses from insects have managed to double in the same period. One problem is that 25% to 50% of pesticides dropped from the air actually miss the designated field. Further, 98% are ineffective against the insects they are intended to kill. At least half of these pesticides enter the surrounding environment, including ground, water, and air. For both field workers and consumers, the dire results can be acute poisoning or latent cancer. Nearly 50,000 cases of poisoning due to pesticides are reported every year. Merely switching to organic farming doesn't solve the problem, either, as pesticide residues still can be detected in produce long after the land has been converted to farming by organic methods. Even in the best organic farms, trace pesticides can be detected in produce for years after pesticide application on the fields has been discontinued.

Organic Gardening In Nicaragua
Peace Corps volunteers have a large variety of duties. Although Jessica’s primary duties are working in agriculture she as well as all Peace Corps volunteers work closely with the communities they live in.
You will find the volunteers helping in schools, attending town meetings, helping make items that to sell at local markets, helping with the sick, inoculating chickens, and doing what ever it takes to support the local residents.
Making a positive difference in the world seems to be the common thread that motivates this group of giving individuals.
With a SoilSoup TM Brewing System, SoilSoup Is being made and supplied to the local farmers In the town of Santa Teresa, Nicaragua. The Peace Corps Volunteer who lives in Santa Teresa makes SoilSoup for herself and the local farmers. She also has a worm compost bin, as her source for compost and she is collecting bat guano from a nearby cave. She then mixes the guano with sugar cane, and makes her own nutrient solution. She reports that her cucumbers are "really big" and the local farmers are very excited about what she is doing. She has had positive results using SoilSoup and loves helping her neighbors set up worm bins and use SoilSoup.
