Current Situation
Interest in organic gardening using organic and natural materials for fertilization and disease and insect control is on the increase. Much of the interest is on reducing or eliminating use of chemical pesticides for controlling insects and diseases. There is less interest in the use of natural and organic fertilizers. This rapid growth and tender new foliage is also to big a temptation for hungry insects. Aphids, pill bugs, slugs and snails have a field day in the spring. Moth and butterfly eggs hatch out in the spring and become very hungry worms. Remember that these worms will one day become moths or butterflies. Sometimes they are consume more greenery then you can afford to lose. Spray or dust only the affected plants with products that contain Bacillus thuringiensis ( BT ) and you will control worms.

Gardening organically isn't just gardening without chemicals. You, the gardener, must work with nature to develop an ecosystem in your garden. What does that mean? Learn about and encourage healthy bugs like ladybugs, lacewings, and other predatory insects to come into your garden and feed on your pests. You can do this by planting fennel, dill, allyssum, ammi majus, and cumin. Help your soil feed your plants. Add as much organic matter as you can in order to feed soil organisms. These organisms will break down organic matter and will eventually feed your plants. Try to make your own compost. Not only does compost nourish the soil, making it reduces kitchen and garden waste immensely!

Organoponicos are concrete container bed gardens found in urban areas all over Cuba (Photo: by Kristina Taboulchanas)
      Overview
Prior to 1990 urban gardens were virtually non-existent in Cuba as they were perceived by many to be a sign of poverty and underdevelopment (Altieri et al.,1999). For years Cuba had been dependent on trade subsidies and imports from their Soviet allies. With the collapse of the Soviet Union (USSR) in 1989, Cuba was plunged into a serious economic crisis known as the Special Period . By 1990, Cuba had lost 85% of its imports including both agricultural inputs and food. Food imports had accounted for 57% of Cuban caloric intake (Murphy, 1999). Before the Special Period, Cuba's agriculture was based on an intensive monoculture approach that was heavily dependent on agrochemical imports. The demise of the USSR devastated Cuba's agriculture due to the loss of 80% of its fertiliser and pesticide imports (Warwick, 1999). The lack of agricultural imports forced Cuba to diversify farming practices and to adopt methods of organic agriculture. Most importantly, this crisis exposed Cuba's heavy dependency on imports and seriously threatened food security. The passing of the "Cuba Democracy Act" in 1992 and the "Helms-Burton Act" in 1996 (by the US Congress) exacerbated the economic crisis (Warwick, 1999). In response to this crisis the Cuban government launched a nation wide urban agriculture movement as an alternative source of food security.

    ORGANIC GARDENING
In recent years much attention has been given to gardening organically. The intense interest in ecology and concern about the environment have been responsible for the renewed interest in this form of gardening. By using natural minerals and materials, by taking advantage of natural predators, and by recycling garden waste, the home gardener can maintain an organic garden quite successfully. It is difficult in one article to give even the basics of this type of gardening. Rather than explain all the technical phases or reasons for gardening this way, I will simply give you a few suggestions of things you can do to begin gardening organically. Composting - Compost supplies the soil with a rich, friable source of humus and helps retain moisture in the garden, in addition to supplying valuable nutrients. By placing grass clippings, fallen leaves and unused plant parts in a compost pile, you are preparing them, through decomposition, to be put back to work for you. Composting actually recycles garden waste and returns the nutrients that have been taken from the soil. By using organic composting agents, it is possible to speed-up the process of decomposition. Over the years, composting has gotten a reputation for being a time-consuming job, but this is not necessarily the case. You don't need to build a big box or turn the pile every so often. A barrel, a hole in the ground or a pile on top of the ground is satisfactory. The important requirement is to be sure the waste material is covered with soil, so it doesn't attract rats, other rodents or flies.

    What is organic gardening?
An urg FAQ by Alan Gould Main Sections are: INTRODUCTION PART ONE - BACKGROUND PART TWO - HOW IT IS DONE
    INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this FAQ is to present the background and practice of recreational organic gardening either by e-mail or web-page for use by anyone who wishes to read about the subject on the Internet. The FAQ's aim is to collate and present known principles and methods of recreational organic gardening, not to propose new ones or conflict with those currently accepted. Because it is not possible to fully detail all aspects of this gardening system in one document a number of other sources of information are provided at the foot of the first section. Grammatical notes:
Some organisations and individuals use upper case (capital) 'O' to begin the word 'organic' where it describes the gardening practice, others do not. This FAQ uses lower case 'o' mid-sentence in compliance with the Chambers English Dictionary 7th. Edition definition: "...produced without, or not involving the use of fertilisers and pesticides..." Where the expression 'organic gardener' is used it indicates 'a gardener carrying out organic practices'. 'Natural' for the purposes of this document means 'not done by humans'.
