Welcome to my Garden!
Most people are really surprised to find out I have a garden and love gardening with a passion. But then I like surprising people. :) In the months to come I will note here the progress of my organic herb and vegetable garden and offer as much basic information as possible. To start, a brief introduction: I live in Oswego County, NY (north of Syracuse), on a rocky, wooded site - not the best for gardening. But I found a small sunny spot (since enlarged) and started digging. Literally. I dug the earth up with my hands and a few simple garden tools, and took out thousands of rocks. Unfortunately they keep growing back...
One thing I decided on from the very beginning was that no chemicals would enter the garden. I didn't want to poison not only the healthy herbs and vegetables I was to grow, but also our water, pumped up from underground streams. I built the soil strength (which was pretty good to begin with, thanks to ages of natural composting in the forest) with a little pure topsoil, organic manure, and lots of my own compost. And I used only natural methods to deal with the few pest problems which developed. And it's worked! Take that, chemical corporations!

Herbs I Grow
I decided to separate my herb garden from everything else - it is still adjacent to the vegetables, but has it's own little design, enclosed with paths. It's not very big (about 18 X 24 feet), but in the space I have it's all I could do for now. Still, once it grows in it should look quite nice. And, most importantly, it is filled with many wonderful herbs!

Organic Gardening Tips
Looking for tips on specific types of vegetables or herbs? Get vegetable and herb gardening tips here. Mulch your flower beds and trees with 3" of organic material - it conserves water, adds humus and nutrients, and discourages weeds. It gives your beds a nice, finished appearance.
Mulch acid-loving plants with a thick layer of pine needles each fall. As the needles decompose, they will deposit their acid in the soil.
The most important step in pest management is to maintain healthy soil. It produces healthy plants, which are better able to withstand disease and insect damage.
Aphids? Spray infested stems, leaves, and buds with a very dilute soapy water, then clear water. It works even on the heaviest infestation.
Compost improves soil structure, texture, and areation, and increases the soil's water holding capacity. It also promotes soil fertility and stimulates healthy root development.
Look for natural and organic alternatives to chemical fertilizers, such as the use of compost. Our use of inorganic fertilizer is causing a toxic buildup of chemicals in our soil and drinking water.

Anyone who wasn't paying attention to the USDA's organic standards fiasco this week wouldn't have noticed yet another Bush administration flip-flop. This time, the USDA, and Ann Veneman, Armageddon freak, tried to allow some pesticide and antibiotic use in organic food. Today, about 24 hours later, Veneman backed off those changes. It was all probably a ploy so Bush could say he protected the organic standards from attack.
One thing's for sure: John Kerry doesn't flip-flop on the environment. He gets a 92%, an A, from the League of Conservation Voters . George Bush gets an F. The first F they've ever given.
So, all you Kerry voters in California and New York (or any other solidly blue or red state) get your asses to Ohio, where you only have to be a resident for 30 days to vote there.

Certification
There are two types of organic vegetable production in North Dakota, certified vegetable production and non-certified vegetable production. Certified vegetable production refers to raising produce under the production standards of the certifying organizations. The Organic Foods Production Act of 1990 is working policy toward a national standard for organic production. The goal of this act is to standardize organic production. Currently there are a number of certification groups with their own standards of organic production in the United States. Commercial organic producers are all certified by one verifying system or another. Certificates are necessary because it is impossible to market organic vegetables commercially without this certificate. Wholesale buyers demand it. The principle certification organizations in North Dakota are: FVO - Farm Verified Organic OCIA - Organic Crop Improvement Association OGBA - Organic Growers and Buyers Association Fees are charged for certification or membership. Remember, in order to be certified, guidelines set forth by the organization must be followed.

Organic Gardening Techniques
Denny Schrock
Department of Horticulture, University of Missouri-Columbia The success or failure of the organic approach depends on how gardeners use and prepare organic matter. Organic matter improves soil tilth and prevents soil compaction and crusting. It increases the water-holding ability of the soil and provides a more favorable soil environment for earthworms and beneficial microorganisms. It slows erosion, and in later stages of decay, organic matter releases nitrogen and other nutrients to growing crops. Carbon dioxide from decaying organic matter brings minerals of the soil into solution, making them available to growing plants. Many soils of the world have been ruined, mainly because they have been depleted of organic matter from prolonged cultivation without proper soil management.
Sources of organic matter
Animal manures. Where available, animal manures are excellent sources of organic matter and nutrients for the soil. It is best to apply manures after they have been composted and partially broken down. Fresh manure may be applied directly to the soil, but this should be done in the fall and plowed down so that there is adequate time for sufficient breakdown and ammonia release before crops are planted. Those who do not have access to fresh or composted animal manures may find packaged dried manures for sale in nurseries and garden stores. Because fresh, composted manure contains high amounts of water, an equal weight contains fewer nutrients than dried manure. Also, the fertility of manures from different sources varies widely. Table 1 gives some average figures.

Introduction
Background
Organic Gardening and Farming, Look to the Land , by Lord Northbourne. Not just a technique, but a philosophy as well, the components of what we now call organic gardening and farming have been practiced for centuries. Practice of good husbandry of the land was of significant importance to ancient writers such as Cato, Virgil, Pliny and Columella. The rotation of crops was recommended by Thomas Tusser in his classic and often reprinted work of 1580, Five Hundred Points of Good Husbandry 1864 Report of the U.S. Commissioner of Agriculture

Introduction
The recent passage of the National Organic Program Final Rule, coupled with growing consumer support for organic foods, have made farming organically an increasingly viable alternative for many U.S. farmers. In addition, there has been renewed awareness of organic agriculture on the part of public interest groups, marketing organizations, and agricultural researchers. This Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) web site serves as a starting point for those interested in organic production in agriculture. "Organic farming is one of the fastest growing segments of U.S. agriculture during the 1990s. USDA estimates that the value of retail sales of organic foods in 1999 was approximately $6 billion. The number of organic farmers is increasing by about 12 percent per year and now stands at about 12,200 nationwide, most of them small-scale producers. According to a recent USDA study, certified organic cropland more than doubled from 1992 to 1997. Two organic livestock sectors, eggs and dairy, grew even faster." (
