Whether we know it or not, many of us already practice forms of organic gardening. We just don't give it any thought. Organic gardening is the practice of growing fruits and vegetables, using only things found in nature. Absolutely no man-made chemicals are used. Although we usually do not think of it, Organic Gardening concepts also apply to the world of flowers, trees, shrubs, and even your lawn. It is gardening without harmful and artificial chemicals, or other products not naturally found in nature. Commonly today, chemicals and non-natural products are used for fertilizing, and for control of insects, disease, and weeds. Did you Know?

    WHAT DOES ORGANIC MEAN?
Organic (with a capital 'O') practice is a form of plant and animal husbandry
which emphasises an approach sympathetic with the planetary ecosystem. In
general, synthetic chemicals are not used, and the use of natural fertilisers
and pest control techniques (like companion planting and appropriate mulching) is encouraged. Apart from the ecological benefits, this usually results in tastier food, free from the synthetics residues found in most

    Organic Gardening in the Backyard
Successful organic gardening requires consideration of many factors, including resistant cultivars, crop rotation, sanitation, incorporation of organic matter, garden location, and insect and disease control. Dale T. Lindgren, Extension Specialist-Horticulture

Organic gardening is growing in popularity. Although this technique traditionally has been limited to backyard gardens, commercial organic farms now exist in Nebraska. The phrase "organically grown" generally refers to produce grown and processed without the use of synthetic organic chemicals in pesticides, fertilizers, preservatives, or flavorings. The main arguments for organic gardening are that food is less likely to contain potentially harmful chemicals and that fewer chemicals are released into the environment. Arguments against it include possible lower yields and reduced quality produce. For the home gardener, organic gardening is an attractive alternative to using synthetic pesticides. Organic gardening can be challenging, interesting and rewarding, even if only partially successful. However, growers may have to accept some damage and/or lower yields from disease or insects if they don't use pesticides.

For more than 50 years, the members of Austin Organic Gardeners have been sharing information about successfully raising vegetables and ornamentals (trees, shrubs, flowers, and groundcovers) without using harsh fertilizers that harm the soil and toxic pesticides that disturb the ecological balance. The club's philosophy is that human and animal health depends on the health of the soil that produces their food. Healthy soil, which is rich in organic matter, abounds with organisms that convert minerals in the soil into forms plants can use. The well-nourished plants growing in these soils are better able to defend themselves against attacks from insects, diseases, and other pests.
