Characteristics of organic substances
The reason that there are so many carbon compounds is that carbon has the ability to form many carbon chains of different lengths, and rings of different sizes ( catenation ). Many carbon compounds are extremely sensitive to heat , and generally decompose below 300'C. They tend to be less soluble in water compared to many inorganic salts. In contrast to such salts, they tend to be much more soluble in organic solvents such as ether or alcohol . Organic compounds are covalently bonded edit
History
Organic chemistry as a science is generally agreed to have started with Friedrich Woehler 's synthesis of the organic, biologically significant compound

Paula Yurkanis Bruice University of California, Santa Barbara, CA Welcome to this World Wide Web online study guide. This online study guide is specifically designed to accompany the text, Organic Chemistry Credits This site is enhanced with
  • online quizzes which include instant scoring and coaching.
  • online Molecule Gallery which includes useful tools for exploring organic chemistry.
  • critical thinking and writing activities.
  • dynamic web links which are a valuable source of supplemental information.
  • ChemOffice activities appropriate for each chapter
Visit this site when you want to gain a richer perspective and a deeper understanding of the concepts and issues discussed in Organic Chemistry. How Students Can Use This Website The online quizzes here provide instant feedback for your answers, helping you to understand quickly the right way to think about the problems. Use them as preparation for your homework assignments and exams. (Your professor might even assign these quizzes as your homework!) Use the Molecule Gallery as a visual reinforcement for some of the geometric concepts explained in the book. Download the ChemOffice activities as an introduction to using professional molecular modeling software. How Instructors Can Use This Website Use the Syllabus Manager to distribute online and offline assignments. You can use the practice exercises and quizzes here as homework sets that will be automatically graded for you, and the results sent to you by email. For example, assign a Practice Exercise set before starting a chapter in lecture to encourage students to do preparatory reading; the results of the automatic grading will also show you which topics students found difficult and need special emphasis in class. Use the Current Topics area to assign special web-based research questions. You can use either the Spartan Workbook (optional with the book) or ChemOffice Ltd as your molecular modeling software choice.
