Market Gardening, Mini-farming, Mini-ranching
The information contained here is provided to promote raised bed agriculture (rba) and minifarming. My emphasis is on using organic and biointensive growing methods to achieve more production with smaller acreage. Mini-Agriculture Benefits Your Community Whether for job training, crime prevention, school gardens or the mentally or physically disabled, urban agriculture has a proven track record for improving the quality of our communities. Vacant lots and land are everywhere in our country, land which can be used for food production, waste recycling, garden areas and beautification of our cities. More Minifarming Commercial Applications Through free enterprise and micro-entrepreneurship both urban and rural mini-agriculture applications have been proven to produce substantial income on surprisingly small acreage. There is unlimited opportunity in mini-agriculture whether rural or urban. Mini-agriculture can provide a comfortable income, a quality lifestyle, a great service to the community and it's a great way to raise kids. One woman took a one week course, went to Alaska, prepared the land and sold $20,000 worth of vegetables and then had six months of vacation. A couple in Midland, Texas, grossed $14,000 from one and a half acres. More Revolutionary Agriculture in Action Ken has taught minifarming and miniranching to groups around the globe. Throughout Africa, South America and in the United States he continues to teach techniques of organic biointensive raised bed agriculture and market gardening. "On foreign trips, I take with me a set of hand tools which a blacksmith can copy. Most of the these tools, the students have never seen."

Organic Agriculture in Rural Development Whose Agenda?
J OHANNES K OTSCHI
Association for the Promotion of Locally Adapted Land Use in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe (AGRECOL), Germany
Introduction Organic Agriculture (OA) in Developing Countries is dominated by interests, values and norms from the North. This limits its spread, restricts its importance as an innovative concept for self-sustained rural development and, ultimately, inhibits the worldwide growth of markets for organic produce. There are thousands of local initiatives which strive for Organic Agriculture, with no access to the global market and with an urgent need for support. From the northern perspective they are often labelled as ``hidden Organic Agriculture'' or ``Organic by Neglect'' and considered as part of the global movement. But there is little awareness of their potentials and needs, which differ significantly from northern settings. The enthusiasm about the increase in organic trade in the North has diverted attention from this problem, with the result that the potential for development of Organic Agriculture in the South is under utilised. Description of Approach AGRECOL, a German NGO, has started an initiative under the theme ``Organic Agriculture for Rural Development''. The project aims to contribute to the endogenous development of Organic Agriculture and, thus, to increase its importance in revitalising agriculture towards sustainable food security. Local NGO from all over the world have been invited to participate, and an E-group of around 80 members has been established. By E-mail dialogue the group exchanges experiences, analyses shortcomings, and identifies solutions. A part of the group will meet in Bonn/Germany for a workshop in late October. Together with European professionals they will share ideas and initiate appropriate measures in order to overcome identified constraints.

Livelihood Security and Organic Agriculture. The Case of Uganda
M ICHAEL H AUSER
University of Agricultural Sciences (BOKU), Institute of Organic Farming, Austria
In Uganda, a high proportion of the rural population is poor or vulnerable to become poor. To them, agriculture is an important livelihood strategy. Over the years, organic agriculture has developed into a booming sub-sector and an increasing number of farmers have responded to the rising international demand for certified organic produce from less industrialised countries. Uganda is currently exporting coffee, sesame, cotton and fruits to the European Union, Asia and North America. Some of the cocoa and vanilla production is under conversion. Given the enormous drive of the organic sub-sector in a globalizing world, the question is what organic agriculture has to offer for the poor and the vulnerable segments of the Ugandan society. This paper describes the progress of a study that aims to contribute to a better understanding of (a) the impact of organic agriculture on livelihood security, and in particular on the asset base of farmers and

Agriculture in the United States is becoming more productive. In 1935, there were 6.8 million farms in the United States, and the average farmer produced enough food to feed 20 people. In 2002, the number of farms was estimated to be 2.16 million, and the average U.S. farmer produced enough food each year to feed more than 100 people. In addition to providing an abundant food supply for domestic markets, crops from nearly one-third of U.S. farm acreage are exported to overseas customers. Consumers have benefited from American food production capabilities. The percentage of income Americans spend on food has dropped by 50 percent since the early 1900s. Statistics for the year 2000 show that Americans are spending 10.6 percent of their disposable income on all food consumed both at home and away from home. This figure has dropped dramatically over the years, from a high of 25.3 percent in 1933, 20.5 percent in 1950, and 15.1 percent in 1965. Farming practices have changed dramatically over the years. The result is a larger, less expensive, more diverse, and safer food supply. But no other profession or way of life has greater sentimental appeal to the American public than farming. While much of that appeal is well deserved and still appropriate, public perceptions of farming simply have not kept pace with realities. This may not matter until a food issue focuses their attention on farming practices and leaves them shocked to learn that a modern farm differs significantly from the storybook image of childhood.
