Living at EcoVillage

EcoVillage at Ithaca , a member of the Ecovillage Network of the Americas, is comprised of an intentional community and a non-profit organization. Our goal is to explore and model innovative approaches to ecological and social sustainability. We're creating a unique habitat which includes cohousing, organic agriculture, an education center, and natural areas, preserving and restoring over 80% of the land as green space. The residential component of EcoVillage will be comprised of 3-4 tightly clustered cohousing neighborhoods surrounding a Village Center. The first neighborhood (FROG) was completed in 1997, and the homes of the second neighborhood (SONG) will be completed in 2003. Future residential development of 30+ homes in our "north field" is anticipated, but no active plans exist at present. "Cohousing" is a form of housing development which originated in Denmark in the late 1960s. Cohousing residents manage their neighborhood by consensus, and own common property, such as land and a Common House, where meals can be shared (see Links for more info). Possible future projects include an education center, an energy-efficient greenhouse, orchards, a farm stand, agroforestry, on-site biological wastewater treatment, greywater recycling, wind energy, willow/poplar energy crops, and a non-toxic village cemetery.

Horizon Organic boasts a full line of certified organic milk, other dairy, egg and juice products. We strongly believe in the importance of organic agriculture, not only to provide the best-tasting, highest quality dairy and juice products, but also to encourage a safe and beautiful future for the planet. One of our top priorities as an organic food company is the respectful treatment of animals. Raised under humane conditions, the cows that supply Horizon Organic Dairy with milk are never treated with antibiotics or growth hormones and are fed only 100% certified organic cotton seed, hay and grain. They also have access to clean water, fresh air, pasture and exercise. Read about our commitment to humane animal treatment including our response to the National Organic Standards Board's recommendation for poultry management. Without organic farms, there are no organic products. Horizon Organic Dairy currently owns and operates a 3,885-acre organic farm in Idaho and a 465-acre dairy farm in Maryland. We also purchase approximately two-thirds of our organic milk from family and independent certified-organic dairy farmers across the country. Through our feed and milk supply purchases we proudly help support over 200,000 acres of organic farmland. In providing the choice of wholesome organic milk, other dairy and juice products, Horizon Organic Dairy continues its commitment to support and promote sustainable agricultural practices and safe land use.

140. Texas Organic Growers Association
Mission is to enhance the credibility of organic agriculture in the production of food and fiber. Information on education programs and resources, news, membership, and calendar of events.
http://www.texasorganicgrowers.org/
Enter Tofga is a publicly supported, non-profit Association whose members include commercial plant growers, ranchers, farmers, retailers, wholesalers, processors, distributors, consumers, and anyone desiring to support the organic industry in Texas. Our primary mission is to promote organic agriculture as a sustainable systems approach in the production of food and fiber; a system that protects human and animal health, and preserves the environment. Plants and animals reflect the soil and environment in which they grow, live, and develop. Farmers using sustainable methods replenish nutrients lost from the soil with natural amendments that provide the necessary elements needed for healthy topsoil development and management. Sustainable ranchers encourage the growth of natural forage by careful attention to grazing time, seasonal rangeland stress, observation of natural controls of predators, and elimination of alien plant material that competes with native flora. Consumers support organic producers because they take personal responsibility for their own health, and for the future of this planet. Tofga believes everyone has a right to fresh, nutritious food produced without chemical pesticides, herbicides, (and many other -cides), urea-based fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified seed. Toga is devoted to making this right a reality. With the assistance of many committed member-volunteers, this association spreads the word about sustainable agriculture through speeches, workshops, literature, conferences and one-on-one mentoring and guidance.
