Introduction
This bibliography cites writings through which may be traced the evolution of organic/sustainable agriculture and its pattern of philosophical and scientific aspects. It is not a comprehensive list, but the interested reader will find authors' references, individual bibliographies, and sources within the cited writings which will widen the traced path. Three recent compilations have been of invaluable assistance in the preparation of this bibliography: R. R. Harwood* and M. C. Merrill*, writing in 1983 I and A. M. Scofield* (who wrote a brief article on the origin of the name "organic farming" in 1986) included in their writings citations to selected important works, many of which are cited here. In addition, acknowledgment is made.of the work of the Canadian "Ecological Agriculture Project" (EAP) of the Macdonald College of McGill University, which has also compiled annotated lists of the literature of ecological agriculture and of selected background works of holistic approaches to agriculture. All of the works cited here are in the collection of the National Agricultural Library, and NAL's call numbers are included in the citations. Directly below the call-number is a "cited in" reference which refers to one or more of the following listed authors:

What is organic farming

Is organic food more nutritious than conventional food?
www.omri.org Is organic food safe?
Yes. Organic food is as safe to consume as any other kind of food. Just as with any kind of produce, consumers should wash before consuming to ensure maximum cleanliness. As cited above, organic produce contains significantly lower levels of pesticide residues than conventional produce. It is a common misconception that organic food could be at greater risk of E. coli contamination because of raw manure application although conventional farmers commonly apply tons of raw manure as well with no regulation whatsoever. Organic standards set strict guidelines on manure use in organic farming: either it must be first composted, or it must be applied at least 90 days before harvest, which allows ample time for microbial breakdown of any pathogens. Is organic food really a significant industry?

9. Biological Diversity In Food And Agriculture
Essential functions such as nutrient cycling, decomposition of organic matter, crusted populations in natural ecosystems and in and near agricultural ecosystems
http://www.fao.org/biodiversity/index.asp
How does Biodiversity benefit natural and agricultural ecosystems?
PRODUCTIVITY: Conservation and management of broad-based genetic diversity within domesticated species have been improving agricultural production for 10,000 years, however diverse natural populations have been providing food and other products for much longer. A wide range of species provides many thousands of products through agriculture and from the harvest of natural populations. High production levels are sustained through maximising the beneficial impact of ecosystem services for agricultural, modified and natural ecosystems. ADAPTATION: A diverse range of organisms contributes to the resilience of agricultural and natural ecosystems, their capacity to recover from environmental stress and their ability to evolve. Informed adaptive management of agricultural and natural biodiversity, above and below ground and under water secures sustained production. MAINTENANCE OF ECOSYSTEM FUNCTIONS: Essential functions such as nutrient cycling, decomposition of organic matter, crusted or degraded soil rehabilitation, pest and disease regulation, water quality, and pollination are maintained by a wide range of biologically diverse populations in natural ecosystems and in and near agricultural ecosystems. Maintaining this diversity of species and building on and enhancing ecosystem functions reduces external input requirements by increased nutrient availability, improved water use and soil structure, and natural control of pests.

Just published: A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives
(10.06.2004) The book „A Guide to Successful Organic Marketing Initiatives“ is based on the experiences of many active Organic Marketing Initiatives – both successful and less successful – which were analysed within the European research project OMIaRD in 19 European countries, both within and outside the EU. To facilitate successful marketing of organic products, the book sets out the main challenges of the market and policy environment as well as the key management factors. It highlights that in different stages of development different priorities and marketing activities are relevant. The guide is written for farmers, advisors, processors and everyone else involved in marketing and rural development who has an interest in the creation or further development of successful organic marketing initiatives. Statistical Data on Organic Farming
(07.06.2004) At a recent conference in Berlin, Germany, the issue of organic data collection and processing and possibilities of improvements was discussed. It became obvious that the relevant authorities are highly interested in collecting and processing of statistical data on organic farming but that there is a great need for harmonisation of data collection - both on a national and on a European level. The event had been organised by the project European Information systems for Organic Markets (EISFOM), funded by the European Commission.

http://www.ocf.berkeley.edu/~tselby/
Topics in Sustainable Agriculture Index: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture Statement of Purpose: Needs of Sustainable Agriculture: The Promise of Sustainable Agriculture: ... Links: The Assault on Alternative Agriculture There is a battle waging within agriculture today, a battle that is pitting large segments of agribusiness against the sustainable agriculture movement. Opponents of sustainable agriculture control much of the media and therefore their opinions dominate the debate and the minds of the masses. They assert that if farmers stop using chemicals (that they just happen to produce) the world would starve. They cite biased economic studies, such as the one conducted by Thomas Foster (an agricultural economist for the Tennessee Valley Authority and the National Fertilizer Development Center) in which he claims "Taking chemicals out of agriculture could mean cutting exports in half, 217,000 fewer jobs, rampant inflation, and a huge increase in food costs. . . Yields generally fell in all scenarios while costs per unit of crop increased in all cases." ( Omaha World-Herald 15 November 1990, 19). This type of economic study (even if totally correct) is extremely irresponsible. It is obvious that the conversion away from chemically based agriculture "is a slow, methodical, step-at-a-time procedure"(p.94
