Oregon Trail History and Education Center
Three Island Crossing State Park , where Oregon Trail settlers and Native Americans crossed the Snake River, offers a trail to the past with its new Oregon Trail History and Education Center. The Center made its debut in 2000 and has become a prime attraction for tourists visiting Three Island Crossing State Park in Glenns Ferry, Idaho. The 10,000 square foot facility tells a story about two very different cultures brought together at the Three Island Crossing on the Oregon Trail. It reveals how pioneers and Native Americans met the challenges of an expanding nation and the importance of the Three Island Ford.
History
Native Americans used the site as a place to fish for salmon and as safe passage to the other side of the river. They knew the river well and used this knowledge to help emigrants cross the Snake. They also took advantage of their fishing abilities and bartered fresh salmon for items brought West by pioneers tired of bacon, beans and hard bread.

Horace Greeley quoted the Bible: God creates in order to populate . (Isaiah 45: 18). But where would the populators come from? They weren't all "yankees" like in some fifties TV western. MANY backgrounds were represented. Here, for you to peruse, are a range of links to articles and pictures around the web.

Pine River Middle School Who We Are Lesson and Projects Resources ... News Around the Middle Oregon Trail Middle School students travel West with the Oregon Trail II CD. This activity is part of their Literature/English/Writing classes. Seventh graders complete writing assignments using activity sheets and the diary. In the classroom students keep a journal about their adventure . They make special writing paper to imitate the type of paper emigrants may have used in the 1800's. Students read about the history of the Oregon Trail, the reasons settlers left their homes and traveled West, the hardships they encountered, as well as the landmarks and places of interest they found along the way. Students learn about the Native Americans along the route and how they felt about the migration westward. To complement their trip, they also go on an Oregon Trail Internet Scavenger Hunt. MECC has a good activity package for students that accompanies the school version of the CD. There are several other web sites that contain Oregon Trail information.

Trail of Tears PARKS National Historic Trails - Oregon National Historic Trail Jurisdiction : National Park Service Established: Route: 2,170 miles (3,495 km) As the harbinger of America's westward expansion, the Oregon Trail was the pathway to the Pacific for fur traders, gold seekers, missionaries, and emigrants. Beginning in 1841 and enduring for more than 20 years, an estimated 300,000 emigrants followed this route from the Midwest to Oregon on a trip that took five months to complete. Today the trail corridor contains some 300 miles of discernible wagon ruts and 125 historic sites. The approximate route can still be followed by automobile, and opportunities are available to travel by foot, horse, or mountain bike in many places. Oregon-California Trails Association, P.O. Box 1019, Independence, MO 84051-0519; 818-252-2278 The historic Oregon Trail extends from Independence, MO to Oregon City, OR. It traverses 2,170 miles of road, including 300 miles of discernible ruts, and offers the adventurous road traveler 125 historic sites along the way

End of the Oregon Trail By the 1860s, Oregon City had lost its position of prominence, following the establishment of Oregon's new capital at Salem and the growth of the downriver town of Portland. It still remained a literal crossroads, as the Willamette Falls marked the division between steamboat traffic on the upper and lower river until construction of the locks in the 1870s. It was also a favored site for the railroads, and the Southern Pacific placed its water-level route along the coast. In a typical year, there are 70,000 to 80,000 visitors to the Center from as far away as Germany, Japan, Australia, and South Africa. The project is documented with six pages of text, 11 color slides with descriptions, and a promotional brochure. Local Legacies Home States Listing Project Titles
