The Oregon Trail byTodd Underwood The Oregon Trail migration, more correctly known as the Oregon-California Trail migration, is one of the most important events in American History. The Oregon-California trail was a 2,170 mile route from Missouri to Oregon and California that enabled the migrating of the early pioneers to the western United States. The first emigrants to make the trip were Marcus and Narcissa Whitman who made the trip in 1836. However, the first mass migration did not occur until 1843 when approximately 1000 pioneers made the journey at one time. This trail was the only feasible land route for settlers to get to the West Coast. From 1843 until 1869 when the first transcontinental railroad was completed, there were over 500,000 people who made the trip in covered wagons pulled by mule and oxen. Some went all the way to Oregon to farm and others went to California to search for gold. The trip usually took 4-6 months by wagon traveling 15 miles a day whereas the only other route to the west, by sea, took a full year.

Today is The need to investigate - and tell - the rest of the story about the Oregon Trail has been with producer Michael Farrell for a long time. It may have had its first stirrings during one of those Saturday afternoons he spent as a child at the neighborhood movie house watching John Wayne westerns. Farrell, like millions of other kids, grew up with Hollywood's version of the "heroes" and the "villains" of America's westem history. Early on he began to question that simplistic view. "Many of us had our first history lessons tbrough the movies, where the emigrants who went West were represented as intrepid pioneers who were looking to conquer a new land, and the Indians were often portrayed as villains, committing unprovoked violence against countless innocent white families," said Farrell. "The fact is that the movies - and many of our history books - were a mythic creation justifying the westward expansion. The real story is much more complex than anything I've ever seen in a movie or elementary school history book." "Violence did occur, but not as often as the movies would have us believe," Farrell explains. "The more common occurrence is that Indians would come into a wagon camp to trade or ask to be paid for the use of their grazing areas. And many times the encounters were tense. But in the vast majority of cases the outcomes were positive."

marks the 150th anniversary of the Applegate Trail, the southern route of the Oregon Trail. It was blazed in 1846 as an alternate, and hopefully safer route to Oregon. Three brothers, Lindsay, Jesse, and Charles Applegate and their extended families came to Oregon on the original Oregon Trail during the first major migration in 1843. As the party was rafting through the rapids on the Columbia River just outside The Dalles one of their rafts capsized in the current and Lindsay's son Warren, age 9, Jesse's son Edward, also age 9, along with Alexander Mac (Uncle Mac, age 70) drowned. This tragedy made the brothers determined to save others similar grief and find a safer route to the Oregon Territory. By the Spring of 1846, the brothers had settled in the Willamette Valley of Oregon, planted crops and built cabins, but they were determined to find a safer, more secure route for emigration. Charles stayed home to care for the family and land. Lindsay and Jesse, along with Levi Scott and ten others formed a scouting party to be known as the the South Road Expedition. On June 20, 1846, they left La Creole Creek (now Rickreall) near Dallas, Oregon on their journey south. They traveled down the Willamette Valley through what is now Corvallis and Eugene. They continued on to just south of Ashland, then turned east, reaching Greensprings Mountain about where Highway 66 crosses today. On they traveled across Oregon and Nevada until they reached the Humboldt River, then they turned north along the river for 200 miles.

Teacher's Guide Note: This study guide was originally designed as a companion for the 2-hour historical video documentary "The Oregon Trail." You may duplicate material in this study guide for classroom use. Background The Oregon Trail was much more than a pathway to the state of Oregon; it was the only practical corridor to the entire western United States. The places we now know as Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada, Idaho and Utah would probably not be a part of the United States today were it not for the Oregon Trail. That's because the Trail was the only feasible way for settlers to get across the mountains. Without the Trail, most of the American West would likely be a part of Canada or Mexico today. The journey west on the Oregon Trail was exceptionally difficult by today's standards. One in 10 died along the way; many walked the entire two-thousand miles barefoot. The common misperception is that

ON THE OREGON TRAIL . . .
"The great migration to the West continued for years, in varying amounts. It is estimated that 350,000 of our ancestors made the overland trek between 1841 and 1866."
By Myra Vanderpool Gormley, CG
The Oregon Trail is an American Western history buff's dream. Film makers have found this subject endlessly fascinating for it is packed with human drama.
However, as genealogists, though we like history, we want to find a record of our ancestors. We want to locate their names somewhere to prove that they were one of those who packed up and went "West."
The Oregon Trail is one of the great migration stories in American history and surprisingly, is well documented. For the genealogist the main problem is tracking down the repository that has information about the particular wagon train that their ancestor took "out west." This research often will take you into historical archives and out of the genealogy collections with which you are familiar.
Researchers must become familiar with what are called the Platte River trails. For it is under this subject you are most likely to find information about your family's move to the West.
It was in 1841 when the first organized band of emigrants to follow the Platte River across the Plains, the Bidwell-Bartleson expedition, split at Soda Springs, with half going via Fort Hall and the Snake River to blaze the Oregon Trail and half going via the Humboldt River to explore an emigration route to Oregon.
