21. Oregontrail
Why is the migration to California and oregon by way of oregon trail consideredto be one of the most important events in american history?
http://shabonee.northbrook27.k12.il.us/OregonTrailWebQuest/oregontrail.html
Introduction The Oregon Trail was much more than a pathway to the state of Oregon; it was the only practical corridor to the entire Western United States. The Trail was the only feasible way for settlers to get across the mountains. The bravery and fortitude of these settlers resulted in the American West becoming part of the United States rather then Canada or Mexico. The original Oregon Trail software program has been sold to a new company. The new company has asked several advertising agencies in the area to help compile a more complete history of the migration and physical aspects of the Oregon Trail to be included in the new program. In addition the agency will design a CD ROM cover for the new product. The advertising agency that the company selects will receive a million dollar for the project. Tasks Your class will be divided into several different groups each representing a different advertising agency . Each agency will have representatives from four different areas that will research the various aspects of the Oregon Trail. Each agency will give a final presentation to the president of the software company and historian, Merrill Mattes who has identified the Oregon/California migration as one of the ten most important events in American history. These two judges will select the agency that will receive the contract based on their presentation.

Basic Facts About the Oregon Trail
During eight decades in the 1800's the Oregon Trail served as a natural corridor as the United States moved from the eastern half of the continent towards the west coast. The Oregon Trail ran approximately 2,000 miles west from Missouri towards the Rocky Mountains to the Willamette Valley. A trail to California branched off in southern Idaho. The Mormon Trail paralleled much of the Oregon Trail, connecting Council Bluffs to Salt Lake City. Top Last modified: December 13, 2002
