Jobs Oregon Tourism Commission Launches New Travel Magazine In a move to bolster tourism and increase awareness of the beauty and attractions of Oregon, the Oregon Tourism Commission (OTC) has unveiled a new magazine designed to promote travel to and within the state. Called Travel Oregon , the four-color glossy represents the first time OTC has blended a travel guide with the look and feel of a contemporary lifestyle magazine. The new magazine includes a combination of feature stories on popular Oregon offerings, special interest sections, a calendar of events, and suggested trip itineraries. The premier 128-page "Spring/Summer" issue includes feature stories on Oregon's lush public gardens, paddling the wild Rogue River, exploring eastern Oregon, golfing hotspots, suggested three-day getaways, and the state's bountiful farms and orchards, including recipes to try at home. The magazine represents a significant departure from the travel guide format previously used by the commission, which included mostly facts and figures, offering no feature articles or seasonal focus. Unlike the previous travel guide, which was updated every other year, Travel Oregon will be published twice a year and feature new, seasonal stories in each issue.

Speech by Governor Kulongoski April 15, 2003 Oregon Tourism Conference
Governor Theodore R. Kulongoski
Lincoln City, Oregon
April 15, 2003
Thank you for having me here in Lincoln City.
As many of you know, I love the state of Oregon. I believe that the Governor of Oregon needs to be the top salesman and cheerleader, if you will, for the state. I consider today's event a pep rally. Our state also holds a tremendous diversity of wonders. From sandy beaches to towering mountains, deep gorges, high plains, and a mix of vegetation and animals that change with each of our climate zones, the sheer variety nature offers us culminates in a state that you could literally explore all your life. But for many people in the U.S., and around the world, Oregon is a place they know of, but have never visited. There is so much to see here in Oregon - so much we have to share. And more importantly, so many more people to share it with. We welcome 9.5 million visitors a year, and they spend $6.1 billion dollars. But Georgia, a state of comparable size, manages to pull in $15.5 billion dollars every year. In my mind, there's room for $9.4 billion dollars of improvement. Clearly, our tourism industry needs a shot in the arm. At this time we are considering a 1% statewide charge on lodging to invest back into the tourism industry. I don't think this is a question of "Is this a good idea?" This is an investment that will pay off. This IS a good idea. If we invest a dollar and get back five in revenue, this IS a good idea. If we can invest a dollar of advertisement and get back $114 in tourism spending, this IS a good idea. It's time we stopped selling Oregon short. It's time we started selling Oregon to the nation.

Press Release September 26, 2003 Governor Signs Tourism Bill, Departs for European Trade Mission (Portland, OR) - Governor Ted Kulongoski today signed HB 2267 into law, creating a new hotel/motel tax that will generate approximately $10 million annually for promoting Oregon as a great travel destination. The Governor signed the bill in a press conference in front of the Lufthansa ticket counter at the Portland International Airport this afternoon, hours before departing to lead a delegation of business leaders on trade mission to Munich, Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Rotterdam.
First, I would like to thank our hosts, the Port of Portland, Lufthansa Airlines and the many business partners that made the direct link between Frankfurt and Portland possible. I believe, as Lufthansa does, that this was a wise business decision, and that we will have many years of mutual benefit from their decision and our joint efforts.
Second, I would like to note that a major part of the reason Lufthansa chose Oregon was for the great assets we offer the German and the European traveler.
Our abundance of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, cultural amenities, and historic attractions, not to mention fresh Oregon produce, wines and microbrews served up in Oregon restaurants throughout the state - create an unforgettable Oregon travel experience.

Wanderlust Tours was recently invited to attend the first session of the Oregon Tourism Commission’s new Sustainable Tourism Working Group. The process is the result of an executive order from Governor Kitzhaber that mandates that "the State of Oregon shall develop and promote policies and programs that will assist Oregon to meet a goal of sustainability within one generation."
The Commission invited select state agencies, organizations and companies to help develop principles of sustainability that can be applied to the tourism industry. Wanderlust Tours was invited to share its ideas as a leader in the state that has been practicing sustainable tourism since its inception in 1993.

"The community networking and collaboration the MG staff was able to establish was incredible, the media coverage was beautiful, extensive and fantastic… I could go on and on....but the bottom line is —THANKS! Not only did the project meet and in many cases exceed our goals, but the MG team was a joy to work with. They are dedicated, creative, organized and smart— really top notch. I think I speak for the whole team when I say I would be happy to work with them again and to recommend Metropolitan Group for other projects of this nature." Julie Curtis

Oregon Tourism Commission Objective:
Results Achieved: The month long Historic Columbia River Highway Celebration involved thousands of participants and included community celebrations, a 75-mile antique car parade, a 4.6 mile run/walk, a dedication ceremony, business promotions, sanctioned events including an art exhibit, bike rides, boat excursions, nature walks and many other activities. Metropolitan Group developed and implemented a public awareness campaign and a sponsorship plan that resulted in over 33 million impressions made during the summer of 2000. The celebration involved representatives from the communities along the highway, as well as representatives from state and federal agencies, in every step of the project, from initial planning to final implementation.
