About GFU : Community Contributions Consistent with the university's mission to "serve humanity in a spirit of Christian love" and to provide "distinctive learning opportunities through continuing education programs," George Fox participates and sponsors numerous community-oriented activities, including the following:
Serve Day – Every fall, George Fox closes campus for a day and sends more than 1,400 George Fox students and employees into the community to volunteer on about 60 service projects. Typical projects include painting, yard work, and assisting seniors.
Science Equipment Loans — More than 70 public and private K-12 schools in Oregon and Washington borrow science equipment from George Fox’s science department. Items loaned include microscopes, snakes, and cadavers.
Homeschool Science Courses — George Fox education and science undergraduates teach science courses in campus laboratories to about 360 homeschool and local elementary students. Between six and nine eight-week classes are offered a year. The only cost to students is for materials used. One of the science classes is presented in Spanish free of charge to local Hispanic students.
Summer Science Camp — George Fox students and professors offer two four-day science camps for children ages 9–12. Nearly 50 students participated in 2002.

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department serves the needs of the City of Oregon residents and students within the Oregon School district. The Department consists of a full-time director, full-time secretary, program coordinator, and utilities supervisor. In addition, seasonal personnel are hired to supervise recreation venues, keep score, officiate/referee, maintain grounds and concession operations. The department operates from a Recreation Levy and is subsidized from the City of Oregon general fund. Additional revenues are raised through donations, small fees and charges, and concession operations. By far, our most popular programs are our baseball and softball programs. Over 1200 pre-kindergartners to seniors in high school participate in t-ball, coach pitch baseball and softball, baseball, softball and a high school co-ed softball program. Basketball for third grade through high school boys and girls is offered as well as a summer program consisting of a roving playground meeting at three elementary schools, an art program, tennis lessons, basketball camps, track, and a summer theater program. Over 125 students participate in our full contact fifth and sixth grade football program, and over 600 players from kindergarten through eighth grade play soccer. An introduction to cheerleading is offered for fifth and sixth graders in the fall.
