STUDENTS IN THE NEWS: Stice Selected for Prestigious Boren Scholarship
Nathanael Stice, a sophomore majoring in Russian and politics from Umatilla, Ore., is one of 181 students from across the nation selected from nearly 900 applicants to receive a prestigious National Security Education Program David L. Boren Scholarship. The $10,000 NSEP Boren award is designed to provide outstanding U.S. students with the resources to be able to study and acquire language skills and experience in countries critical to national security. Recipients agree to seek work in the federal government in the future. Previous Boren scholars are working in federal jobs with the departments of Commerce, Defense, Justice, State Treasury and Homeland Security as well as NASA and the U.S. Congress.
Stice, the son of Nancy and Barry Stice of Umatilla, plans to study next year at Tavrida National University in Simferopol, Ukraine. He says the application process for this award was long and arduous. “The application took a large chunk of my time and I even fell behind in my classes trying to complete it,” he confides. “But it was worth it. I’m really excited to be studying abroad in my junior year.”
He says he plans to use the money to study Russian language and culture in the Ukraine. “I want to improve my cross-cultural communication skills,” he says. “I’m really stoked about visiting some of the cultural and historical sites like the site of the famous Yalta Conference. I’m also interested in learning more about the political climate in the developing Ukraine.”

Willamette’s Environmental Law Moot Team Shines
Willamette College of Law’s Robert L. Taylor JD’04 has been named the best student advocate for environmental law in the nation. Judges at the National Environmental Law moot court team competition, held this week in New York, have named Taylor Best Oralist in the entire competition.
For the second year in a row, Willamette Environmental Law Moot Court Team has done very well in the national competition. During the preliminary rounds, Taylor received two Best Oralist in round awards and Aaron Young received one Best Oralist in round award. Each round has six people present oral argument and the judges select the Best Oralist from each round. Taylor was then named Best Oralist of the competition. The Best Oralist Award goes to the competitor with the highest scores in oral advocacy during the first preliminary rounds.
Willamette team members Jodi Skeel JD’05, Aaron Young JD’04 and Taylor, successfully competed in three preliminary rounds before advancing to the quarterfinals. After winning the quarterfinals and advancing to the semi-finals, the team narrowly lost a chance to argue in the finals. The three teams that advanced to the finals included two teams Willamette had already beaten in the preliminary rounds. While the Willamette team didn’t win the entire competition as they did last year, they beat more 200 other law students on 70+ teams to make it to the semi-final round. Willamette’s team members are among the best 4-5% of student advocates in environmental law in the nation.

Human Development and Technology
in the Information Age
Series Overview
The adoption of all things Internet has raised America's love affair with technology to a fevered pitch. No area of our daily lives is untouched by the rapid changes in technologies, but few are as important to our long term financial and developmental health as education. In this 10-month series, CHIFOO invites psychologists, educators, researchers and technologists to provide insight into the rapidly changing landscape of technology and learning. This wide-ranging series examines technology in the classroom, in brain development, and in adult and community education. Each talk showcases a technology in the context of the learning objectives for a defined audience. Speakers also present the methods they used to evaluate the effectiveness of the technology. This series is a must for students, educators and professionals interested in specific technologies, and the role technology can play in creating effective and appropriate learning experiences.

Oregon, schools must pay lawyers in Boy Scout case
By The Associated Press
PORTLAND Portland schools and state officials have been ordered to pay more than $100,000 to lawyers who successfully argued that the district discriminated against atheists by allowing the Boy Scouts to recruit during school hours. Multnomah County Circuit Judge Ellen Rosenblum said state Superintendent Stan Bunn, the Oregon Department of Education and Portland Public Schools must pay $108,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union. The ACLU took up the case on behalf of an atheist whose 12-year-old son was subjected to recruiting pitches at school. David Fidanque, executive director of the state chapter of the ACLU, said the judge's award is among the largest ever granted to his group. Legal fees will climb if the case continues to be appealed, he said.
