The Register-Guard It's hard to gauge how the contract dispute between a local production company and crew members working on "The Sisters" feature film will affect future efforts to lure moviemakers to Lane County and the rest of Oregon, industry observers said Monday. Earlier in the day, about 15 crew members shouted slogans and hoisted signs, but could do little else as replacement workers drove past the Chambers Media Center's electric gates. The substitute workers arrived a day after 65 members of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees went on strike to protest the Chambers production company's refusal to sign a union contract. Motion picture technicians picket outside Chambers Media Center Monday. Some technicians plan to strike until production on "The Sisters" ends. Work on the movie, based on Anton Chekhov's classic play "The Three Sisters," began in mid-April and is expected to end this weekend with wrap-up shoots around town and at the Chambers complex in north Eugene.

Well-stocked, staffed school libraries boost FCAT scores, UCF research shows
Students at schools with better libraries outperform peers on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, University of Central Florida research reveals
ORLANDO, Fla. Students at schools with well-staffed libraries that circulate the most books and have the most computers outperform their peers on the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test, according to research at the University of Central Florida. FCAT scores, the state's primary measure of student achievement, were 20 percent higher in 2000-01 in reading at high schools that employed at least one full-time professional librarian and the equivalent of one other full-time library employee, UCF education professor Donna Baumbach concluded in her "Making the Grade" report. FCAT scores also were highest at elementary and middle schools with well-staffed libraries. Fifty-five percent of students passed the FCAT reading test at high schools with a full-time professional library media specialist and one or more employees who worked a combined 40 hours or more a week, compared with 37 percent at other high schools. Other factors influencing test scores include the size of a school's library collection, the age of the materials and the availability of computers in the library. Like studies in Colorado, Oregon, Texas, Iowa and New Mexico, the Florida research shows there is a strong correlation between available resources in a school's library and student achievement.

We need a summit of unemployed
Elizabeth Clewett , 06.03.2004 09:19 In talking with Oregon congressional staff, I have proposed a "summit" of the unemployed, so as to put human faces on the statistics with which politicians play, including those no longer counted but who remain jobless. I've been told this idea is "dangerous," and to wait patiently as the Congress and the Legislature address complex issues that the average American cannot understand. The unemployed need to be informed rather than infantilized, vocal rather than silenced, and mobilized rather than marginalized.

School-associated homicide rates are highest near the start of each school semester, while suicide rates are generally higher in the spring semester. PRESS CONTACT:
    Mark Anderson, M.D., M.P.H.
CDC, National Center for Injury Prevention and Control New information from a CDC study may help school administrators in better planning and implementing violence prevention programs. In analyzing school-associated violent deaths since the beginning of the 1992 school year, CDC researchers found that student homicide rates are typically highest near the start of the fall and spring semesters. Student suicide rates were higher during the spring semester. Over the seven-year study, CDC confirmed 209 school-associated violent deaths. The latter equates to an average of 1 student homicide event every 7 school days, and 1 student suicide event every 31 school days. Additional violence prevention information is available on the home page of CDC's National Center for Injury Prevention and Control at:
