Meeting the Needs of Students Through the Library Media Center
by Dr. Steven R. Wisely, Guest Columnist
Former Superintendent; Medford, Oregon, School District
Editor's Note : I heard Steve Wisely speak this past spring at a school library media specialists' symposium in Portland, Oregon, while I was attending the Northwest Council for Computers in Education Conference. It quickly became clear that he had been an administrator "on a mission" throughout his career with his dedication to library media programs in his district. So I asked him to write a "spirited editorial" for "DirectConnect" that
MMS readers could hopefully use to rally administrative support of their own programs across the nation. Here's the result!

33. Proof Of The Power: Quality Library Media Programs Affect Academic Achievement
school — Level, Percent of test score variation explained — Level by library media variables alone. Pennsylvania, Colorado, oregon.
http://www.infotoday.com/MMSchools/sep01/lance.htm
Proof of the Power:
Quality Library Media Programs Affect Academic Achievement by Keith Curry Lance Director, Library Research Service Colorado State Library and University of Denver MultiMedia Schools • September 2001 T he evidence is mounting! By early 2000, researchers affiliated with the Library Research Service of the Colorado State Library and the University of Denver—myself included—had completed four statewide studies on the impact of school library media programs on the academic achievement of U.S. public school students:
  • "Information Empowered: The School Librarian as an Agent of Academic Achievement in Alaska" "Measuring Up to Standards: The Impact of School Library Programs and Information Literacy in Pennsylvania Schools" "How School Librarians Help Kids Achieve Standards, The Second Colorado Study" "Good Schools Have School Librarians: Oregon School Librarians Collaborate to Improve Academic Achievement"
Philosophically, these studies are rooted in the "Information Power" model espoused by the American Association of School Librarians and the findings from 6 decades of research related to the impact of school library media programs on academic achievement. The latest edition of Information Power: Building Partnerships for Learning (1998) identifies three roles for school library media specialists. In a learning and teaching role, library media specialists advance the instructional goals of the school. As providers of information access and delivery, they develop collections and services and facilitate their use. And, as program administrators, they serve as library media center managers as well as school-wide advocates and trainers for information literacy.

Sarasota County Library/Media Program
A committee of Sarasota County school media specialists and district curriculum coordinators, under the direction of Gerry Haworth, Supervisor, Media and Instructional Materials, and Lynn Urban, Instructional Technology Specialist, began meeting during the 2001-2002 school year to research the topic of Information Literacy and discuss plans for developing useful tools to assist teachers and media specialists in effectively teaching information literacy skills. During the summer of 2002, media specialists and teachers began developing the materials found on this website. The materials will continue to be refined and expanded throughout the 2003-2004 school year.

About the School
The UO School of Journalism and Communication offers programs leading to bachelors, masters and doctoral degrees. undergraduate students major in one of six areas: advertising, electronic media, communication studies, magazine journalism, news-editorial, or public relations. The school, which started as a department in 1912 and became a professional school in 1916, is one fo the oldest journalism schools in the United States and one of the most broadly conceived. The school is accredited by the national Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications ( ACEJMC ). The University of Oregon has one of the few accredited programs in the western United States with as many as six fields of study. The program is based on a premise that the best professional communicator is broadly educated. In accordance with national accrediting standards, undergraduate students must take at least 131 credits in courses outside the School of Journalism and Communication. Of those, 94 credits must be in courses from the College of Arts and Sciences . A maximum of 49 credits in the 180-credit undergraduate program may be in journalism and communication courses. Students learn about the practice of mass communication and its effects. They study the role of communication media in society, the history of journalism, visual aspects of communication, the ethics of media practices, new commuincation technologies, the economics of the media, and the legal and social responsibilities of the media in modern society.
