    Oregon State Library
A state supported library in Oregon began on August 14, 1848, when Oregon's legislative assembly funded the purchase of a territorial library and appointed the first territorial librarian. In 1852 the territorial legislature provided funds for an annual salary for a librarian to administer the territorial library and for the relocation of the library in Salem. A fire in 1855 destroyed the library's holdings, but under the direction of a new librarian the collection of books was renewed.
The first state legislative assembly established an annual budget for the purchase of books. Between 1868 and 1894 the State Library moved to different locations in Salem before finally locating in the state capitol. The 1878 legislative assembly appropriated funds to improve the library, to make it "...one of which the state might be proud." Although improvements were made, a wind and rain storm blew the roof off of the capitol building in 1889 and soaked the library's holdings.
The Oregon State Library in its modern form was established in 1905 when the Oregon State Library Commission was organized and provisions were made for the separate care of law books and for the separate collection of documents and books. Cornelia Marvin was appointed as the first secretary of the Oregon Library Commission. The commission consisted of the governor, state superintendent of public instruction, president of the State University (University of Oregon), librarian of the Portland Library Association, and one appointee.

Sentinel staff report "When I was a freshman, my sorority had a required study table in the evening where you sat with a gaggle of girls," Solari said in a statement. "It was difficult to study with all the whispering. So in the daytime, I spent a lot of time in the library. ... It was a very quiet, welcoming place, especially amid the uncertainties of that time." Solari grew up in Klamath Falls, Ore., and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1946 with a degree in psychology. Richard Solari was raised in Watsonville, and he rose from laborer to president, chief executive officer and chairman of the board during a 50-year career with Granite Construction Co. He retired in 1995. The recent gift will endow a library/archivist position to care for the school’s historical records, dating to 1873. Among the 12,000 boxes of university publications, student dissertations, photographs, audiotapes and memorabilia is the final draft of the screenplay for "Animal House," the classic fraternity comedy shot at the campus in 1977.

    February 25th 1998 Gordon Ray,
    President, Pacific Northwest Library Association,
    2392 Woodstock Drive,
    Abbotsford, BC
V3G 2E5, Canada Dear Mr Ray, I want to alert you that members of the Oregon Library Association Executive Board voted on February 5, 1998, to continue membership in PNLA for another year and reevaluate this membership at the end of that year. Board members took that action because they wanted to allow more time to explore options for YRCA and give PNLA more time to redefine its mission. Because many see YRCA as the major reason to continue membership in PNLA, the financial burden for funding an OLA representative to PNLA will be the responsibility of three Oregon groups serving children: The Children`s Services Division (CSD) and Oregon Young Adult Network (OYAN), both part of the OLA organization, and the Oregon Educational Media Association (OEMA). OLA will continue to budget for one-fourth of the estimated cost of support for the representative as well as for the PNLA membership fee from the Association`s general fund. The OLA Nominating Committee will be instructed to select candidates who are CSD/OYAN members for the position of PNLA representative. An election will be held soon for a new representative who will take office in September 1998. However, in taking this action to continue membership in PNLA for now, the Board strongly expressed concern for PNLA`s future. OLA members value the YRCA and are concerned about the connection of that program to an organization struggling with its overall mission. The Board`s intent is clearly to tie continued OLA membership in PNLA to a successful outcome of PNLA`s refocusing effort. PNLA needs to establish a reason for its existence apart from YRCA, since YRCA can, and perhaps should, exist outside of PNLA. Our representative to PNLA will be charged with focusing on the future of YRCA.
