Oregon Genealogical Resources

Syllabus for a Speech
An introduction to Oregon resources with an emphasis on where to find the records in print, on microfilm, the Internet, and onsite.
Historical overview
American and English fur trading companies opened the Oregon Territory. Retired Hudson Bay employees developed the first settlements. American settlers began arriving over the Oregon Trail in the 1840s. Political boundaries between England and the United States were settled in 1848, and Oregon became a state in 1859. Ethnic groups who came to Oregon include Irish, Chinese, Germans from Russia, Scandinavians, and African Americans. Russians and Mexicans are the new immigrants.
Libraries and Repositories:
There are valuable resources available to Oregon researchers, but most are still unindexed and unpublished. Onsite research at local repositories is a necessity. See "Major Repositories for Oregon Research,"online at http://www.oregonvos.net/~clenzen/orgenrepos.html

Hello, I'm writing you to invite you to participate in Koha's 2010 discussion. Koha is a free software (or open source if you prefer the term) ILS. It has been in production since early 2000, and has recently been selected by libraries in the US for use as their ILS. (You can see http://www.koha.org for more information.) One of our goals is to be able to provide the level of functionality needed to support Oregon libraries in implementing the vision 2010 that you've laid out (as well as other library associations with similar projects). Our discussion is being held via email, you can subscibe to the mailing list by sending email to koha2010@kohalabs.com and following the directions you recieve. The email is being archived at http://www.kohalabs.com/mail/koha2010/

REVISED STATE PLAN FOR FEDERAL DEPOSITORIES IN OREGON
I. Introduction. In 1981 the GPO recommended that federal depositories develop State Plans to coordinate the federal documents depository program within each state. Severe budget constraints on all libraries compelled depositories to find ways to improve service while conserving funds, space and staff. As a way to meet the needs of the public in Oregon, it was decided at a Documents Interest Group of Oregon meeting that Oregon documents librarians would draw up a State Plan for Federal Depositories . The Regional and all Selective depositories would have to agree to and support the Plan for it to be effective. The State Supreme Court Library and the Federal Depository at the Bonneville Power Administration would not be obligated to adhere to the State Plan guidelines but would be encouraged to participate in the Plan as much as possible.
