COOLSchool

How can schools expand curriculum offerings and prepare students for a global workforce where they will need to communicate and work with people from different cultural and economic backgrounds? One promising model is COOLSchool . Interested in ways to harness emerging Internet technologies to improve students' educational access and opportunities, Eugene School District 4J field-tested its Internet-based COOLSchool during the 1995/1996 school year and now offers 42 COOLSchool classes to high school students throughout Oregon and around the world.
Corvallis Online

Corvallis Online, in collaboration with OSU K-12 Online, seeks to provide students with online learning opportunities as an alternative to the traditional school program and to earn Corvallis School District credit. The goal is to allow students flexibility in their learning environment and to provide the option of extending their school day beyond regular school hours and the classroom setting. Courses are taught by certified teachers and built around state content standards. Each course is designed to engage students in their learning through meaningful and relevant curriculum. Teachers provide students with instructional support and feedback to meet their individual needs through the use of email, telephone, or face-to-face conferencing if necessary. Contact us at

Served over 20,000 k12 students through hands on training in computer I-SING Choir from INTEL Corporation, Hillsboro, oregon; And the gregs@nwresd.k12.or.us.
http://www.strut.org/
Message from StRUT's Executive Director, Greg Sampson
It is with a heavy heart that I announce the closure of the StRUT program. Effective August 25, 2003 StRUT will cease operations and will no longer accept donations. StRUT will close its doors due to State of Oregon budgetary shortfalls. The Northwest Regional Educational Service District (NWRESD) of Hillsboro, Oregon and the INTEL Corporation through a collaborative effort founded StRUT in the winter 1995. During the past eight years, the StRUT program served over 150 public K-12 schools throughout Oregon. Thanks, to all the teachers who built and supported the StRUT Program and a special thanks to all of the people, businesses, state and federal agencies who supported StRUT with computer donations. It has been a privilege and honor to serve and be a part of StRUT during the last four years and for this I am thankful.
During StRUT’s eight years of operation, StRUT:
  • Placed over 35,000 repaired, rebuilt and upgraded computers into Oregon K-12 public schools, replacing ineffective, out-of-date classroom computers.
  • Diverted over six millions pounds of electronic waste from Oregon landfills through reuse, reclamation and recycling practices.

Quick Tour of a Linux Classroom...
[and yes, we still have Celeron processors donated by Intel for your classroom
We've been using Linux on the desktop for two years now in many of our 4th-8th grade classrooms. We thought you'd like to see what an actual K12Linux solution looks like. Here's a classroom server. If it looks like this is a typical teacher workstation, well you're right, that's exactly what it is. We used a PC similar to what you might buy for a stand alone workstation and turned it into a mini-terminal server perfect for a teacher and 5 or 6 diskless workstations.  It's been up since September and is used as a workstation/server every day. Our budget for this box was $1000 ($400 monitor + $600 for the server). Server Software: It's running . That means it has Red Hat 7.1 with all the Ximian updates. The teacher can choose KDE or Gnome desktops and Windows98. Software includes StarOffice 5.2 AbiWord , Win98, ClarisWorks and Office 2000.  Why Windows too? This teacher had many files saved in ClarisWorks and was not ready to learn a new OS. She was willing to work with her kids at learning Linux but she wanted the security of a known OS at the same time. We spent $79 for Win4Lin, $95 for Win98 and another $100 for licenses for ClarisWorks and Office 2000. The use of proprietary software increased the cost of the workstation by about 20%.  Hardware Specs: Intel 815 based motherboard, 1 gig Intel PIII cpu with 384mb ram, 20gig ATA/100 IDE hard drive. Intel 10/100 NIC onboard and one additional Intel 10/100 Pro PCI network card. HP DeskJet 870 printer, Samsung 15" LCD monitor, HP5200 scanner. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Software Freedom Day Celebration - August 30th, 2002 Portland, Oregon - June 2, 2002
The Linux in Schools Project in Portland, Oregon is hosting a Software Freedom Day Celebration on August 30th.

Schools in Oregon are saving money by using free software. This year Portland Public Schools saved over $240,000. Multnomah County Education Service District savings totaled more than $190,000.
Software Freedom is more than just saving money though. It's about the freedom of software code. Software published under the General Public License (GPL) is called Open Source software. The GPL license requires that the software code remain free for end users to inspect and improve.
Linux in Schools Project co-founder, Paul Nelson says, "This is a whole new way of developing software. Programmers from all over the world collaborate over the Internet and the result is better software that is free. It is free in terms of cost and free to improve. And our students love it!"
One year ago, in July of 2001, the Linux in Schools Project with the help of the Portland Linux/Unix Users Group (PLUG) released K12LTSP (K12 Linux Terminal Server Project), a package of Open Source software for classrooms now used in over 5000 schools around the world. This month K12LTSP released its second major update, K12LTSP version 2.1. The software is free to download from the K12LTSP.org web site.
