StRUT Coordination:
The torch has bee n passe d
By Marty Willie
StRUT Coordinator/Region Nine ESD
The Dalles, Oregon
http://www.oregonstrut.org

The Students Recycling Used Techno l ogy (StRUT) program was introduced to
Oregon K-12 schools in 1995, with the Intel Corporation and Northwest Regional ESD (NWRESD) as sponsors.
From 1995 through August of 2003, the StRUT program grew from a handful of schools taking part to more than 135 schools and 21 ESDs participating.
Students involved in StRUT evaluate, repair, and refurbish donated computers and, in turn, place those computers into the public schools in their area.
In August of 2003, as funding for public education reached an all time low, NWRESD announced that it would no longer be able to provide coordination for the statewide StRUT program. This unfortunate news would surely have a significant impact on K-12 schools within Oregon. For the first time in eight years, schools would no longer have an opportunity to pick up computers from the StRUT warehouse, nor would they have the option to use StRUT for their e-waste recycling.

    Pollination Station
    Grades K - 6
After dissecting a flower, younger students become the parts of a flower and act out the pollination process. Older students complete detailed worksheets explaining all of the different flower parts necessary to form a seed. If there is time, they then stroll through the garden studying the different shapes of flowers, predicting what kind of animal pollinates the plant, and observing pollinators in action! Time: 45 minutes
    Habitat Huddle and Hike
    Grades K - 6
Students become detectives in search of clues of wildlife at The Oregon Garden. After determining what makes a habitat, students examine a log to identify what lives there and why. Next, students hike through the garden to find evidence of who makes their home here; woodpeckers and frogs beware here come tiny detectives looking to locate your home. Time: 45 minutes
    Plant Adaptations: Key to Survival
    Grades 3 - 8
Students investigate the function of plant parts. They examine special features, which allow plants to survive in stressful environments including dry and wet conditions, poor soil, and winter freezes. Through investigations, they discover that every living organism must meet certain basic needs to survive, and that each has a unique set of adaptations. Time: 45 minutes
