Collections Oral History Oral History Overview The oral history program at OHS was established in 1976 to create, collect, and preserve sound-recorded documentation of Oregon history. Special emphasis upon four main areas of enquiry - law and government, business and labor - is balanced in the program by awareness of the obligation to record all aspects of Oregon history and culture. The resulting collection of tapes, discs, and transcripts presently numbers over 8400 hours of recorded sound, including more than 2100 individual interviews. In its approach, the oral history work at OHS has from the outset given attention to the whole life of experience, accomplishments, and ideas of each interview subject. By 1984 the Society had arrived at a more generous format, extending considerably the time made available for the development of the complete biography. Interviews multiplied in length as the course of the narrative came to be governed by the history actually present in memory as much as by the external purposes of the historian. One factor reinforcing this approach has been the growing realization that every oral history holds great importance to the recording of family history.

Making News in Benton County: Board of Commissioners to Conduct Public Hearing on County and Service District Budgets June 15, 2004 (June 1, 2004) The Budget Committee approved a $77.5 million dollar county budget for fiscal year 2004-05 (FY2005) on May 19, 2004. The Board of Commissioners will conduct a final Public Hearing June 15, 2004 prior to consideration of the approved budget for final adoption. The hearing is scheduled for Noon in the Large Plaza Meeting Room, 408 SW Monroe, Corvallis. Any person may appear at the public hearing to discuss the budget. Also on June 15, 2004, the Board of Commissioners acting as the Governing Body for county service districts will conduct public hearings and consider budgets for adoption for the Benton County Library Services, Alsea, Alpine, South Third and North Albany County Service Districts. Public hearing date and location will be the same as that for the county budget and will be conducted after the county budget hearing.
