Vernonia, Oregon 97064
The first settler in the Upper Nehalem Valley area was Clark Parker who chopped his way into the area and homesteaded in 1874. His Homestead was on the East side of the Nehalem River (Riverview). He came in from the Washington County side. He was followed in 1875 by the VanBlaricom's who homesteaded along Rock Creek in the what is now the main part of town. Other historic names in the community followed soon thereafter including, Spencer, Mellinger, Pringle, Weed and Cherrington. Vernonia was named for the daughter of one of the original settlers, Ozias Cherrington who moved there in 1876. Her name was Vernona. She was born March 30, 1868 in Ohio and later moved to Virginia. She never came to Oregon. Cherrington's co-settler, Judson Weed wanted to name the community Auburn for his home town of Auburn, Minn. The political voting precinct was called Auburn for many years, but finally renamed to Vernonia to avoid confusion. The Vernonia post office was established Jan 11, 1878 with David F. Baker as its first postmaster. The first road out of the upper valley to the North was opened with volunteer labor apparently in 1879. It reached the Nehalem Valley at

A visit to Portland, Oregon (Oregon Geographic Alliance-ILI Institute)
August 1 - 12, 1995 by Connie Mark Portland, Oregon is know as the City of Roses, but I think of Portland as the city of Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five bridges that cross the Willamette River in Portland...Howthorne, Morrison, Burnside, steel, and Broadway Bridge. Burnside Bridge and Street is the other coordinate that separates the north from the south. In Honolulu, we usually think of Mauka and Makai, diamond or eva. We mental map our island by that. The Oregonians mental map their city with the Willamette River and Burnside Street and the direction coordinates, NW. NE. SE. SE. The Columbia River can be seen in the close distance, though it separates the state of Washington and Oregon, it is not as notable in this city where the Willamette passes right through it! I spent as afternoon by the riverside near the Hawthorne bridge. I was intrigued with the raising of the bridge. A part of the bridge can rise up like an elevator to let tall ships through. I usually think of bridges as opening up. One morning we were also stopped on that bridge, to let a ship through. What excitement!

    By David Stauth, 541-737-0787
SOURCE: Gordon Matzke, 541-737-1217 CORVALLIS - The Oregon State Geography Bee will be at Oregon State University on Friday, April 9, as 100 of the state's young geographical whizzes compete for an ultimate prize of $25,000. This is the third consecutive year OSU has hosted the event, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Bank1One. The preliminary round of oral competition will begin at 1 p.m. in LaSells Stewart Center with the final round to start at 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public. "This is a popular event that usually attracts about 500 people, including teachers and parents," said Sheri Ruegsegger, state coordinator for the contest. "A single winner will be chosen to represent Oregon at the national finals on May 25-26 in Washington, D.C., where the top prize includes a $25,000 college scholarship and trip to Australia." That, of course, is if the contestant knows the answer to a question like this: "What U.S. state capital was founded as a gold rush town and isn't linked to the rest of its state by roads?" Too easy. Juneau, Alaska. But lest you think you're ready for prime time, answer these:

Arctic Dawn The Journeys of Samuel Hearne
This site takes you in search of a "far off metal river" from which the Chipewyan have brought copper nuggets along the western shore of the Hudson Bay. The adventure is in the words of Samuel Hearne as he attempted to find this river in 1769-1772. This is an extremely well done site with information about the animals, birds, and natives thoughout the narratives.
