Overview Direction Service is a multi-program family support agency located in Eugene, Oregon. Our mission is to "assist people with disabilities and special needs to live the fullest lives possible." We are a private non-profit corporation celebrating our 27th year of providing outstanding services to exceptional individuals and families. We got our start in 1977 at the University of Oregon under a five-year Bureau of Education For The Handicapped demonstration grant. In 1982 Direction Service left the University to establish itself as an independent agency, developing and growing a broad base of local and federal support. Critical funding comes from United Way, Lane Education Service District, and Lane County Human Service Commission. We place a premium on involving people with disabilities in every level of the agency's decision making structure, including members of our board of directors, paid employees and volunteers. Direction Service presently has four major programs: Information Services Counseling Center , and Consortium for Appropriate Dispute Resolution in Special Education

Considering Mediation for Special Education Disputes: A School Administrator's Perspective
Nissan B. Bar-Lev, Sam Neustadt, and Marshall Peter
Email this
Print this In 1997, when Congress reauthorized the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA ‘97), they included the requirement that states make mediation available whenever a due process hearing has been requested. Congress recognized that in states where mediation was available, "parents and schools have resolved their differences amicably, making decisions with the child’s best interest in mind." While the State Education Agency is responsible for providing mediation services, the process ultimately depends on the participation of administrators and parents in order to be successful. This paper describes the advantages and disadvantages of mediation from an administrator’s perspective in order to help other administrators make an informed decision about whether it is in the best interest of their school district, and ultimately the students they serve, for them to participate.
