A visit to Portland, Oregon (Oregon Geographic Alliance-ILI Institute)
August 1 - 12, 1995 by Connie Mark Portland, Oregon is know as the City of Roses, but I think of Portland as the city of Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five Bridges. The Willamette River is considered a coordinate that separates the east from the west of the city. There are five bridges that cross the Willamette River in Portland...Howthorne, Morrison, Burnside, steel, and Broadway Bridge. Burnside Bridge and Street is the other coordinate that separates the north from the south. In Honolulu, we usually think of Mauka and Makai, diamond or eva. We mental map our island by that. The Oregonians mental map their city with the Willamette River and Burnside Street and the direction coordinates, NW. NE. SE. SE. The Columbia River can be seen in the close distance, though it separates the state of Washington and Oregon, it is not as notable in this city where the Willamette passes right through it! I spent as afternoon by the riverside near the Hawthorne bridge. I was intrigued with the raising of the bridge. A part of the bridge can rise up like an elevator to let tall ships through. I usually think of bridges as opening up. One morning we were also stopped on that bridge, to let a ship through. What excitement!

History and Geography of Forest Grove
History:
Home to the Tualatin tribe, the site of Forest Grove was settled by pioneers in 1840. Pacific University was founded in 1849, making it one of the oldest educational institutions in the western United States. The City of Forest Grove was incorporated in 1872. The City was named for a large grove of Oregon white oak situated on a knoll rising over the Tualatin Plains. Forest Grove has been designated a Tree City USA every year since 1990. Its community forest is noteworthy for its fine stands of white oak, its groves of Douglas fir and stately giant sequoia. Though not native to Oregon, giant sequoia seeds were brought into the area from California by pioneer John Porter over a century ago. The Oregon Department of Forestry has verified that Forest Grove contains the largest giant sequoia in Oregon. Located at the corner of Pacific Avenue and B Street, this tree is 32 feet in circumference, 152 feet high and has a crown averaging 70 feet in diameter. According to the 2000 Census, Forest Grove's population is 17,709, an increase of 31% since 1990. Forest Grove is now the 26th largest city in Oregon. More local and regional

Oregon Timeline Oregon Name Controversy Oregon Name Oddities Where Oregon Names Originated ... History of Oregon Names O ne of the most intriguing things about Oregon is how places received their names and the history behind those names. Oregon has 36 counties and is roughly divided into six land regions: Coast Range, Klamath Mountains, Cascade Mountains, Willamette Valley, Columbia Plateau and Basin, and Range Region.
Oregon Timeline
Spanish sailors returning to Mexico from the Philippines were the first white people to see the Oregon Coast. Sir Francis Drake may have touched shore looking for a route between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. Robert Gray sailed his ship, Columbia , up the river he named after the ship. The Lewis and Clark expedition reached the mouth of the Columbia and wintered there. John Jacob Astor founded Astoria as a fur trading post. It was the first white settlement. Treaty between U.S. and Spain fixed the Southern Oregon border. Treaty made the 49th parallel between British and U.S. Territory.

The Dalles, Oregon
Wasco County
Click here to view a map of The Dalles, Oregon The Dalles is the largest community in the Mid Columbia River Gorge, and serves as the county seat of Wasco County . The Dalles was incorporated in 1857. The population of The Dalles was listed in the 2000 census at 12,185. In 2002 it was listed at 12,250. This is slightly half of population for Wasco County, which is 24,150. The elevation of The Dalles is109 feet. The town has a lengthy history. While it was founded in 1857, the area was long used as a place of trading and rendezvous by Native American tribes from all over the Pacific Northwest. The Executive Director of the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center and Wasco County Historical Museum located in The Dalles, Ken Karsmizki, is an archeologist who has been working closely with NASA's Stennis Space Center in Missisippi to combine satellite imagery with detailed historical maps of the Corps of Discovery's Lewis and Clark Expedition. Karsmizki hopes to use this high tech approach to pinpoint the exact location of several of Lewis and Clark's 600 campsites. The Dalles is one of only two locations in the nation that can identify an original camping site of the famous Lewis and Clark expedition. This local area is now known as "Rock Fort" and has been the subject of research, including a special on Lewis and Clark filmed by the Discovery Channel, a project which Karsmizki served as consultant.

Portland
Easygoing outpost of culture and commerce, Portland rests on rolling hills at the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. From humble beginnings as a gold rush boomtown, it has grown into a regional center for the performing and visual arts—and shipping, thanks to the fine deepwater port. Progressive municipal policy helps clean the air, maintain hundreds of parks, and keep the alpine outskirts wild, making Portland a magnet for outdoor enthusiasts. Downtown’s skyscrapers, cafés, and bookstores ensure that urbanites are equally at home. Photo: A fresh layer of snow covers the city of Portland and Mount Hood.
