Pullman Kids: Geography: U.S.A.: Oregon contains pictures and descriptions of the state of Oregon which is just south of Washington state on the Pacific coast of the U.S.A.. In August 2000 we went to a Bluegrass Festival in northern Oregon in a small town called Clatskanie that the locals all seem to pronounce Clatskanine for some unknown reason. It rained for the majority of the weekend which is not great when you are camping in tents. Scouts Canada sells a badge that reads, "Don't complain, camp in the rain." I think we've earned that one now. It took three hours to dry everything off when the sun finally came out. We then drove south through Portland which is all raised highways crisscrossing every which way. We stayed in Silverton near Salem and hiked the two hour loop through the Silver Falls State Park. There are ten waterfalls in the park. To see all of them would have taken five hours. We saw three. The first one was quite incredible as you could walk all the way behind it. Then we drove south to Eugene and then directly west to the Pacific coast. The Automobile Association guide was helpful. A mile south of Florence are the Sand Dunes. We took a one hour ride over them. The driver tried to make it scary by stopping at the sides of cliffs and then tearing down the huge hill at the end. It was very exciting. We had to play miniature golf before going because there is a long wait because of the crowds.

Thus, I was quite excited about our upcoming experience and was glad we finally had the chance to do it. Saturday, August 7 Jen and I left our home in Los Angeles and drove north to Sacramento, where my little brother lives. We spent Sunday night at my mom's house so we could leave early Monday morning. Monday, August 9 We left bright and early in the morning and drove to Woodland, California for our initial "on the road" breakfast. Its northern border lies along the Columbia River and the east along the Snake River . Two north-south mountain ranges - the Coastal Range and the Cascade Mountain Range - form the two boundaries of the Willamette Valley , one of the most fertile and agriculturally productive regions in the world.
