No other states have gone that route, national education watchdog groups said this week. Laws in most states require students to be in school for 180 days. But a loophole in Oregon's laws allows its districts to deviate from the requirements for a maximum of two school years, and that's led superintendents around the state to consider chopping as many as 15 days from the academic calendar for a quick budget fix. Other cash-strapped states are cutting teacher pay, increasing class size, leaving positions open and laying off staff, said Dave Griffith, the director of public affairs for the Washington, D.C.-area National Association of State Boards of Education.
