Consortium : University of Oregon
The University of Oregon Institute on Violent and Destructive Behavior is implementing whole school and alternative education interventions within a single middle school in Springfield, Oregon. The school serves a high proportion of low income and disadvantaged youth in a community with rising unemployment and a high number of referrals to the Department of Youth Services, frequently for theft-related offenses. The city is still recovering from the tragic shooting at Thurston High School. Two interventions are aimed at the whole school. The first is a social skills training program, Second Step (Committee for Children, 1997), taught to all sixth graders at the school. Students practice problem recognition, empathy, anger management, limit-setting, and choosing friends. The whole school also receives Effective Behavioral Support (EBS) (Sprague et al., 1998; Sugai et al., 2000). The EBS model, developed at the University of Oregon, has been field tested extensively. It addresses the problems posed by antisocial students and challenging forms of student behavior. Problem behaviors and appropriate, positive behaviors are defined for students and staff. Positive, alternative behaviors are taught directly to students to enable them to make behavioral changes. Incentive and motivational systems are put in place. The staff receives training and regular feedback about effectiveness of implementation.

Oregon K-12 Online and Distance Education Providers
Providers of Oregon K-12 online and distance education are linked below. All courses are online except for some of Portland State University's courses, which are correspondence courses. All providers offer high school courses. In addition, SK Online also has courses for elementary and middle-school students, and the Moshi Moshi Hola Hola program has Japanese and Spanish language instruction for Portland area elementary students.
COOLSchool

How can schools expand curriculum offerings and prepare students for a global workforce where they will need to communicate and work with people from different cultural and economic backgrounds? One promising model is COOLSchool . Interested in ways to harness emerging Internet technologies to improve students' educational access and opportunities, Eugene School District 4J field-tested its Internet-based COOLSchool during the 1995/1996 school year and now offers 42 COOLSchool classes to high school students throughout Oregon and around the world.
Corvallis Online

Corvallis Online, in collaboration with OSU K-12 Online, seeks to provide students with online learning opportunities as an alternative to the traditional school program and to earn Corvallis School District credit. The goal is to allow students flexibility in their learning environment and to provide the option of extending their school day beyond regular school hours and the classroom setting. Courses are taught by certified teachers and built around state content standards. Each course is designed to engage students in their learning through meaningful and relevant curriculum. Teachers provide students with instructional support and feedback to meet their individual needs through the use of email, telephone, or face-to-face conferencing if necessary. Contact us at

    The Scope of the Problem
A series of shootings in school classrooms, hallways, and playgrounds during the past few years have underscored one of the chief responsibilities of school officials: preventing students from perpetrating or being victimized by violence or other antisocial behavior.
Cause for Concern Because more than a dozen deadly attacks by students armed with guns have occurred in the nation's schools in the past two years (Lichtblau 1999), many people assume that violence and other criminal activity perpetrated by youth within the walls of our schools is a problem that has skyrocketed in the past few years. In reality, however, current data on youth crime and volence in this country provide reasons for both optimism and concern. The U.S. Department of Education's Annual Report on School Safety 1998

Introduction How children spend their out-of-school hours is an important factor in their overall development. Quality experiences during these hours provide children with opportunities to develop new skills, learn new information, and connect with caring adults, all of which promote positive youth development. Supervising children in the out-of-school hours was once the direct responsibility of parents, but increasingly, as more families have both parents or the only parent in the workforce, families look to others in the community to provide care and supervision for their children, or they leave their children on their own.

Impact of the School-Age Child Care Needs Assessment Project
The surveys were undertaken to gain locally derived data that could be used to guide community-based planning. In all instances, the release of the findings in the county resulted in increased attention for school-age child care issues. Additionally, other short-term impacts were identified. A brief overview of how counties have used or plan to use the data and noted short-term impacts is presented below.

FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC School choice is one of the hottest topics in education. Not only does it have the attention of educators, it has the endorsement of President Bush and a large following of parents. Books are being written, arguments waged, and bills drafted. There is a growing feeling that if parents can choose which schools their children attend, education will improve. However, there are groups urging caution. Some are concerned that issues of equity will be passed over in the push for school choice, causing at-risk students to fall further behind. Because of these concerns, choice plans that focus on equity have begun to receive national attention. Foremost among these is controlled choice, which attempts to create equitable education in a district by providing choice while simultaneously preserving racial and ethnic balance.

    New meningitis case sparks search
Officials wonder if other students were exposed after second case is found at South
    By BILL KETTLER
Mail Tribune The second case of meningitis at South Medford High School in two months has prompted public health officials to look for others who may have been exposed to the disease. A male student was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis last week after he was treated at a local hospital. Meningitis is an infection of the spinal cord fluid and the fluid that surrounds the brain. It can be caused by a virus or several kinds of bacteria. High fever, headache and stiff neck are the most common symptoms, and they often develop within a day.
