Orchids at home
Once the exclusive preserve of the aristocratic hothouse, orchids are now relatively inexpensive and widely available. A range of modern hybrids will grow successfully and flower in the home, as Isobyl la Croix explains Images: Tim Sandall Thanks to the plant-breeding technique of tissue culture, such beautiful hybrids as this X Odontioda Many who buy such plants will never have grown an orchid before and may treat their plant like a poinsettia, throwing it out when it has finished blooming. However, orchids can make excellent house plants and flower repeatedly given the right care.
The orchid industry
Orchids have become so widely available and affordable because of the revolutionary plant-breeding technique of tissue culture. Particularly fine cultivars can be selected and large numbers of genetically identical offspring can be grown, each from only a few cells. Raised under ideal, sterile conditions, these clones reach flowering size far more quickly than variable, seed-raised plants.

Visiting an Orchid Garden
The Seasoned Gardener : Episode SGN-407

A bit of color and a hint of the tropics are in many gardeners' dreams during winter. If you're one of them, you're in luck: this is a great time to grow orchids. These gorgeous plants have an undeserved reputation for being difficult to grow. The fact is, many hardier varieties can be planted right now in some of the warmer zones or can be grown indoors any time of the year. With more than 20,000 varieties in the world, a tour of an established garden is a good place to get some ideas for your home. Master gardener Chris Dawson visits the Orchid Society of America in Delray, Florida. Orchids grow well in this climate in Zone 10, which experiences an average annual low of 30 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Orchids
Gardening by the Yard : Episode GBY-709

"One of the biggest myths within the world of gardening is that orchids are impractical, expensive and next-to-impossible to grow," says master gardener Paul James. "It's just not so."
Figure A
Figure B As the world's largest flowering plant family, orchids come in all sizes and shapesfrom the big and bold ( figure A ) to extremely small ( figure B ). And did you know that the intense fragrance of some orchids can fill an entire room? Discover the truth about these exotic and misunderstood flowers from orchid specialist Carson Barnes:
  • Myth #1: Orchids require greenhouse conditions to grow properly. While Barnes grows his orchids in a greenhouse, you can grow orchids in your home. "The kind of climate that orchids like is very similar to the kind of climate we like," says Barnes. "A bit of humidity in the air, enough light, a drink of water from time to time and the kind of temperature we enjoy in our homes."

How To Build An Orchid Tree

Author: Linda Fortner

Published on: February 1, 1999 This month in the Orchid Garden we are going to build an "orchid tree." If you do not have a lot of space or would just like something different, an orchid tree could be your answer. Creating an orchid tree is a very simple five-step process that requires only a few basic tools and supplies, some plants, and a little imagination. Step One: Finding a Tree Click on photo The first thing you need to do is find a suitable branch for your tree. You can go to a nursery and pay for a mounted "driftwood" type branch, but I think it is more fun to go for a walk and see what you can find right around your back yard or in the neighborhood. A branch from a live tree will usually make a good orchid tree. I chose a branch off of my Sycamore tree . Try to find a branch with a rough surface. A branch with smooth surfaces will work, but are not as good because they do not provide the orchid roots something to cling to. The size and shape of the branch is entirely up to you. It can be as small as one foot or as large as 5 feet! Of course, if you are in your neighbors yard, ask first before taking any of their tree branches ;-) Step Two: Assemble the tools and supplies Click on photo This is a list of items you will need to assemble your tree. You can obtain these items from your local hardware and gardening center:

Customer Reviews What a great orchid book. I'm a beginner, but I'll use it forever. Absolutely wonderful photos and references. I saved an orchid using instructions in this book. I recommend it, especially at this great price. I am notorious among my friends and family for killing plants in no time. Yet, I got this book as a gift along with an orchid (they thought if I was given directions for use, that one plant stood a better chance...:)Not only did the plant make it beautifully, and re-bloom, but I now own and enjoy a few more orchid plants. This book is a great basic for your orchid library. Granted, it doesn't cover all the topics you want to know about(plant diseases for example). However, it is very invaluable and even though I now own more orchid books, I find myself getting back to this one quite often for information. It is not intimidating, very easy to follow and an excellent introduction to a great family of plants, too often inaccurately labeled as fragile and needy.I warmly recommend it to anyone getting started with orchids. This book paired with an orchid plant is one of the greatest gifts I ever received...

To the right of the Trail of Evolution is the Robert W. Wilson Aquatic House. It measures 81 feet by 31 feet. Two pools are the centerpieces of the house. The large, shallow pool features a variety of tropical and subtropical aquatic plants from around the world displayed in a naturalistic swamp environment. Its emphasis is on demonstrating the range of physical adaptations plants have made to live in, on, and near water. Plants include mangroves, papyrus, water hyacinth, numerous aroids, and the giant Victoria water platter. The deep pool, or paludarium, displays many other plants of aquatic and wet environments. Treeferns, mosses, orchids, and an epiphyte tree stand above exposed rockwork, while waterfalls cascade into the six-foot-deep pool. Plants growing in and around the pool highlight the diversity of the world's submerged and emergent flora. Visitors can view these plants from above or from windows situated at the base of the pool.

POPULAR ORCHIDS Orchids have suffered the stigma of being hard to grow and maintain. But, like other plants, their survival depends on correct positioning and attention. Taking a little extra care will bring beautiful rewards. Selecting Orchids Contrary to popular belief, not all orchids are native to hot, humid environments. There are many orchids to be found in many kinds of habitats including deserts, mountains, marshes and woods. There are thousands of species of orchids across a wide variety of form, color, scent and blooming periods. Some orchids produce tiny blossoms each no larger than a mosquito, other orchid flowers are as large as dinner plates. Selecting the appropriate orchid for the growing condition available is probably the most important factor contributing towards the success of the plant. Orchids are no more difficult to grow than many popular ornamental flowering houseplants. They are quite sturdy and resilient. Categories Orchids can be divided into four types according to their natural growing conditions. Most are classified as epiphytes, or air plants, which grow on trees. These are commonly grown in shredded fir bark, pebbles or cork plaques. Epiphyte orchids are not parasitic. They absorb moisture from rain, dew and humidity and nutrients from decaying leaves and other debris that collects among the roots. Other categories are lithophytes, that cling to the surfaces of rocks, saprophytes that grow in decaying vegetation on forest floors, and terrestrials that anchor themselves in soil or sand.
