by Dr. D.G. Hessayon This book is part of a series of books written by Dr. D.G. Hessayon, called the expert books. Published in 1994 they are updated and have the most information about greenhouses and conservatories for the price. I would not build a greenhouse without it. He also includes what to do each month with flowers as well as garden vegetables. Although he is an English author, his subject matter is universal. Included is a dictionary of plants and a troubleshooting guide should one run into problems. Based on the performance of the plants, children can relate to them.

Cymbidium Orchids
Presenter: Peter Cundall [30/01/2004]
Orchids are one of the most sought after, beautiful and romantic plants. Cymbidium orchids are actually epiphytic which means they grow on the trunks of trees, utilising the nutrients from leaf litter and water that collect in the branches and run down the bark.
If you leave orchids in a pot, they will eventually become overcrowded, exhaust the nutrients and stop flowering. At this stage they will need repotting to restore flowering. Cymbidium orchids are quite tough and you do not have to be gentle with them when repotting. Tip the orchid out and tease apart the tough, large roots that the orchid uses to hang onto trees with. Next drag the orchids apart with your hands. You may need to cut the woody part in the middle in order to separate the plants.
An orchid is composed of a swollen part called a pseudobulb which is full of moisture and other swollen parts that appear dead, but are not, called backbulbs. Cut off as many of the dead roots as you can and divide the pseudo- and backbulbs up.
The potting soil is not really a soil but simply bark with a few nutrients, which is similar to the conditions they would grow in when on a tree trunk. To pot, place the pseudobulbs on one side of the pot and fill around it with potting mix. You don’t have to be gentle but remember not to bury the pseudobulb, just the roots. Then give them a good water by dunking the pot in water for a couple of hours. Keep the plant out of direct sun or bright light.

Aussie Orchids
Presenter: John Patrick [13/9/2002]
Australian native orchids have smaller flowers than their exotic counterparts, but their flowers have an attractive delicate beauty, with many species being fragrant and extremely colourful. These dendrobiums and sarcochilus are unique to east and southeast Australia and grow from the Cape York Peninsula to Tasmania and as far west as South Australia.
It is remarkable that around 10% of the world’s flowering plants are orchids, but in Australia the number is proportionately a little smaller. About 4% of our flowering plants are orchids, but there are still over 600 species, and with the constant hybridisation of them there are many hundreds to choose from.
Wayne Turville has been growing these orchids for over 25 years because they are unique and a fascinating challenge to hybridise. There is more mystique to the lesser-known Australian orchids. The results of breeding are highly unpredictable, and finding new unique shapes, sizes and colours is exciting.
In the wild, Australian orchids are mostly either epiphytes growing on the bark of trees or shrubs, or lithophytes growing on wet cliff-faces or boulders. Their aerial roots are covered with velamen, a very absorbent layer that allows them to collect all available moisture. Their growth form can be monopodial, growing from one point upward or sympodial, growing from rhizomes. Not surprisingly the Australian aborigines used these plants for different purposes. The pseudobulbs, the thickened part of the stems of some species provided them with food, others were used as a fixative for cave and bark paintings. Other species, when dried in the sun produced a fibre that could be used in weaving.

Light pink, Orange-Yellow - Ground Orchid -Throughout the year Spathoglottis plicata or Ground orchid, native of Southeastern Asia to the Philippines, is the common species of Orchid which blooms round the year. This easily grown terrestrial herb has pretty, arching broad leaves with prominent parallel veins and a few or large cluster of small flowers at the end of a long stalk as tall as 1 metre arising from a basal leaf axil. The flowers are seen from the morecommon purple to white, yellow, peach, pink and magenta shades. and The leaves emerge from round pseudo bulbs that become increasingly multiple and larger as the orchid matures. Ground orchids can be grown as potted plants and also do well in beds and borders. Propagation and Care It is an easy to grow, extremely adaptable orchid which blooms round the year. Propagation of Spathoglottis plicata is by division. Many plants can be separated from the large clump and can be planted in individual pots or in ground 3 to 6 inches apart. Before planting, enrich the soil with a mixture of garden soil, dried cow dung and leaf mould. Addition of broken bricks and charcoal makes the growing medium loose for roots to spread easily.

This book is what quelled my fears about orchid care. It covers every aspect of orchid growing, and though I do own other orchid books, this book still outranks all the others. Beginners and advanced orchid enthusiasts can both understand and utilize the information in this book. The pest control chapter is informative, and clearly explains the different applications you can use to prevent pests. For a general reference book, this is the apex of orchid information.

This book is very nice with respect to the orchid pictures they have in here. Very nice for a coffee table center piece and an excellent gift to inspire a soon to be orchid lover. They would be absolutely awestruck with their beauty and these photos bring out the best qualities in the flowers. It gives a good description but maybe a little too simple for those in the advance stages of growing. They do, though, have some nice pictures of fairly rare orchids. For example, there is a picture of ...

Exotic Orchids Gallery!

, servant to 300 orchids Text and photos by Diana Lundin A phalaeonopsis, such as this pink one, is among the easiest orchid to grow. They're exotic, beautiful, mysterious and have a reputation for being more demanding than a pop star diva. To some, they are the object of addiction, while to others they are the object of frustration. But in spite of all their idiosyncratic ways, or maybe because of them, orchids are something to admire. And to grow.

A Garden Friendly Native Orchid Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadds Ford' Article by Barry Glick, illustration by Stephen K-M. Tim. Like far too many native plants these days, Spiranthes cernua odorata 'Chadds Ford', a native orchid, was discovered just as its habitat was about to be destroyed. Dick Ryan, an eccentric character with a passion for native orchids, found the plant back in the 1960s in a wet ditch near his hometown of Bear, Delaware. At the time, Bear was a rural crossroads town. Today, this former orchid habitat is overrun by tract homes. It didn't take long for word about Ryan's exquisite discovery to spread. Dr. Merlin Brubacker, a plantsman with a keen interest in tropical orchids, was smitten by this denizen of temperate Delaware. In 1973, a division of the orchid grown by Dr. Brubacker received the coveted Certificate of Cultural Merit from the American Orchid Society. Nodding Ladies Tresses Spiranthes cernua odorata, a fragrant form of the species commonly known as nodding ladies tresses, is found in coastal regions of southeastern states from Virginia to Florida and west to Texas, where it flowers from fall through winter. Nodding ladies tresses grow to about 3 feet tall, with 3 to 6 glossy, dark green
